Joanna Staniszkis: Silk CityCENTRE A, VANCOUVER INTERNATIONAL CENTRE FOR CONTEMPORARY ASIAN ART,VANCOUVER BC – Nov 4-Dec 9 With the support of the Vancouver Foundation and exhibitionpatron Anndraya Luui, Centre A presents Silk City, anexhibition by Vancouver textile artist Joanna Staniszkis.Featuring installations, sculptures and multimedia works, SilkCity continues her ongoing investigation into the history, ecology and aesthetic potential of silk. Staniszkis engages withher material at every stage. She raises the silk worms, growsmulberry trees to feed them and watches them spin theirtightly woven cocoons. An elaborate juxtaposition of giant cocoons, architecturalmodels and live silk worms animates the cathedral-like venueand creates a complex dialogue between Vancouver’s past andpresent. The contemporary urban geography of the rapidlydevelopingand changing city acts as a metaphor for personalgrowth. The installation evokes Vancouver’s history as a portfor ships arriving from Asia laden with raw silk. Historically,Joanna Staniszkis, Wild Silk Cocoons(2006), metal structures covered with silknoil, latex medium, ink [Centre A,Vancouver BC, Nov 4-Dec 9]previewwww.centrea.orgthe valuable cargo would be loaded onto high priority “SilkTrains” and rushed across the country (past the current site ofCentre A) to destinations in Eastern Canada.Joanna Staniszkis is a Professor Emerita of the LandscapeArchitecture Program, University of British Columbia. Therecipient of many awards, she is recognized internationally for her work in textiles. World Upside DownWALTER PHILLIPS GALLERY, BANFF AB – through Mar 4, 2007 Curated by Richard William Hill, WorldUpside Down is a group exhibition of work by individual artists, artist collectives, posters and moviestills that turn normal events upside-down,inside-out and on their head. Killer rabbits huntfor humans, Superman is a hero of the SovietUnion, and British aristocrats are dressed inAfrican fabrics.During the 20th Century, conceptual artistshave frequently illuminated and contradictedthe things we take for granted: the veryconventions of “normal” life. These artworksgenerate social satires exposing what we believeto be truth as simple consensus that may noteven be timely any more. Behaviours taken asnatural and necessary are often revealed asmerely conventional, and possibly not even inour best interests.Among the many works in the exhibit, Jimpreviewwww.banffcentre.ca/wpgTerrance Houle and Jarusha Brown, Untitled (from the Urban IndianSeries) (2006) [Walter Phillips Gallery, Banff AB, through Mar 4,2007]Logan’s The Diner’s Club, No Reservations Required inverts the codes of gendered and racializedrepresentation in Manet’s, Déjeuner sur l’herbe. Yinka Shonibare has restaged Gainsborough’s famouspainted portrait Mr. and Mrs. Andrews as a sculpture, decapitated the sitters, removed the landscape anddressed the subjects in colourful “African” fabrics, referencing complex, hybrid colonial histories. In asimilar socio-political vein, General Idea has changed Robert Indiana’s classic 1960s “Love” graphic to“AIDS”. A commissioned billboard project by Terrance Houle uses photography and video to parody thecomplexities of contemporary Aboriginal identity.
