Joanna Staniszkis: Silk CityCENTRE A, VANCOUVER INTERNATIONAL CENTRE FOR CONTEMPORARY ASIAN ART,VANCOUVER BC – Nov 4-Dec 9 With the support of the Vancouver Foundation and exhibitionpatron Anndraya Luui, Centre A presents Silk City, anexhibition by Vancouver textile artist Joanna Staniszkis.Featuring installations, sculptures and multimedia works, SilkCity continues her ongoing investigation into the history, ecology and aesthetic potential of silk. Staniszkis engages withher material at every stage. She raises the silk worms, growsmulberry trees to feed them and watches them spin theirtightly woven cocoons. An elaborate juxtaposition of giant cocoons, architecturalmodels and live silk worms animates the cathedral-like venueand creates a complex dialogue between Vancouver’s past andpresent. The contemporary urban geography of the rapidlydevelopingand changing city acts as a metaphor for personalgrowth. The installation evokes Vancouver’s history as a portfor ships arriving from Asia laden with raw silk.
