FRAN WILLIS GALLERY, VICTORIA BC – Nov 2-25 In this two-part exhibition, the brightlycolouredimages of Victoria artist Joy Anson and six artists of Indian heritage fill the Fran WillisGallery with verve and energy. Thepaintings and prints of the seven artists usehigh-key colour, figurative abstraction tothe point of distortion, a two-dimensionaltreatment of form, and a predominance oforganic and geometric patterns.Joy Anson has been described as aprimitive or naïve artist. With a whimsicaland humorous sensibility, she createscharming and often nostalgic scenes offamilies, friends and their pets. Her workshares a narrative bent with that of HarenVakil, who lives in Victoria, and JaswantGuzder, who lives in Montreal. Vakil’s workis almost cartoon-like in its complexsurrealism, showing people and animalsstylized like robots. Guzder’s breezywatercolour-like style is loose and dreamy.previewwww.franwillis.comSix Contemporary Artists of Indian Heritage +Joy Anson: Figurative WorksShahid Parvez, Untitled #1 (2006) tempera [Fran Willis Gallery,Victoria BC, Nov 2-25]The other four artists are well-established in India: Shahid Parvez, showing paintings, etchingsand silkscreens; Megansh Thapa, paintings; Alit Dutt, paintings; and Vinay Sharma, mixed mediapaintings.
