Mara Korkola: Dusk to NightDOUGLAS UDELL GALLERY, EDMONTON AB – Nov 4-18 In her first exhibition at the Douglas UdellGallery, Toronto artist Mara Korkola presents fascinating night glimpses of traffic on the outskirts oftowns. Born in 1965 in Marathon, Ontario, Korkoladescribes the margins of Canadian towns and cities: thoseindefinable stretches of telephone poles, billboards, fastfood restaurants and obscure service centres. The roads, dotted with the glow of headlights andtransport trucks, are a dominant compositional andnarrative force. But like “Patsy Cline in oils”, the tinypaintings juxtapose the thoroughfares with the heartbreakingbeauty of sunsets and evening skies. In manyimages, the lights alone create strands of jewels against thedarkness. Her paintings have been described as “… moodyminiature noctures of the highway at night, glazed withwanderlust” (Globe and Mail).Korkola holds an MFA from the University of Texas atSan Antonio, a BFA from Wichita State University (Kansas)previewwww.douglasudellgallery.comMara Korkola, No Place 140 (2006), oil on aluminum[Douglas Udell Gallery, Edmonton AB, Nov 4-18]and is a graduate of the Ontario College of Art and Design (Toronto).
