previewwww.kostuikgallery.comAron Hill: Birds in Opposition, A Natural HistoryAron Hill, ah28 (2006), pencil on paper[Jennifer Kostuik Gallery, Vancouver BC,Nov 9-26]JENNIFER KOSTIUK GALLERY, VANCOUVER BC – Nov 9-26Alberta-based artist Aron Hill graduated from the AlbertaCollege of Art and Design (ACAD) in May of 2000 with a BFAmajor in painting & sculpture. Since that time, his paintingshave shown extensive experimentation with improbablecombinations of styles and techniques – airbrush gradationswith paint spatters, and diagrammatic shapes with smoothwatercolour washes. Hill’s most recent series of work, Birds inOpposition, A Natural History, are pencil and paper bird images, complete with places to live and escape from. They are aselegant and refined as Audubons drawings, but theiranatomically incorrect forms and individual characters give them almost human souls.Since 2000, Aron has been exhibiting at the Jennifer Kostuik Gallery, which previewed hisLoveland series in 2003. The Herringer Kiss Gallery in Calgary, Alberta also represents Aron’swork. In 2006, he received his Master of Fine Arts in painting from Goldsmith College,London, England. He writes, “It is in the process of stripping down and focusing where the environmentbecomes sterile and stark. It is in this environment where the details become obvious andwhere naturalism and architecture is faced quietly and scientifically. Empirical processes arefictionalized and the affect of minimalism is played out in a controlled space that makesspectacles of the given objects. Using minimal tools, colours and objects the rhetoric isminimized and becomes primarily concerned with formalism. After this concern the subject isrooted in architecture’s opposition to nature and human’s manifestation of this opposition, including mine.” Mia JohnsonOmega Custom Framing &Gallery4290 Dunbar St ✆604-732-6778www.omegagallery.camon-sat 10am-6pm Thru Nov 10Pnina Granirer, “In Search of Meaning”,paintings, some with mylar and3D Plexiglas constructions; Nov 12-Dec 8 David Lemon, new works, mixed media on canvas; Dec 9-30Graham Smith, “Backyard Dreams”,oil stick paintings; Jan 2-24 “GroupShow”, gallery artists.Or Gallery103-480 Smithe St ✆604-683-7395www.orgallery.orgtues-sat 12-5pm Dec 23-Jan 4: closedThru Nov 11 David Askevold, StephanDillemuth, Paul Gellman, FraukeGust, Judith Hopf, Annette Kelm,Alice Könitz, Cristóbal Lehyt, JulieLequin, Marriage (James TsangMathBass), Reza Monahan, Arthur Ou,Katrin Pesch, Fredrik Strid,Stephanie Taylor and Michaela Wünsch,“New Ghost Entertainment-Entitled”,poses the question of whetheran engagement with mediumism, spiritualismor ghost stories can serve asa contemporary approach towardinventing or reinventing artistic andpolitical forms of expression, andwhether the metaphor of the ghost canadd a useful dimension to criticalengagement with social and politicalphenomena; Dec 1-Jan 13, 2007Kristin Lucas, belongs to a generationof young artists working in video, installation, performance and interactiveWeb projects.
