Christopher BurkettNORTHWEST BY NORTHWEST GALLERY, CANNON BEACH OR – Nov 25-Jan 5 ChristopherBurkett’s large-scale colour photographs capture splendid moments in nature. His immaculatelandscape prints, up to 50 inches wide, engross viewers with their fine details and delicatepresentation of nature’s cycles. Burkett’s latest images, likeGolden Aspen Glade, Colorado and Autumn Tempest, Utah, have a new panoramic format. They are exhibited withclassic signature works like Cottonwood and Light, Utahwhere Burkett’s use of temporal light to transform actualhues is at its peak. The spirit of nature compels Burkett to create imagessuffused with an inner radiance and soft glow. As he putsit, “I'm trying to show something that is precious andreal: something that most people do not see.” Burkett, anative Oregonian, is nationally recognized for hisdarkroom mastery and Cibachrome prints. Devoted tothe craft of conventional optical printing, Burkett doesnot crop or digitally manipulate any of his originalphotographs. Instead, he shoots them with a large formatcamera and uses 8" × 10" colour transparencies (incombination with black and white contact negatives) toachieve sharp contrast and luminosity, meticulouslyprinting the work himself with sophisticated maskingtechniques.Burkett studied with Ansel Adams and learned hissystem of zone exposure before working in offset printingpreviewwww.NWBYNWGALLERY.comChristopher Burkett, Graceful Aspen, Colorado (2005),cibachrome [Northwest by Northwest Gallery, CannonBeach OR, Nov 25-Jan 5]and laser scanning.
