Mentally Ill or MetabolicallyDisadvantaged?byDr Chris Reading, B.Sc.,Dip.Agr.Sc.,M.B.B.S.,F.R.A.N.Z.C.P.,F.A.C.N.E.M.The politics of psychiatry.I’d like to explain what orthomolecularpsychiatry is and alsosome of the politics associated withpsychiatry. The term “orthomolecular”shares its meaning with “orthopedic”which means straighteningout limbs and “orthodontics” asstraightening out teeth. Therefore“orthomolecular psychiatry”means correcting the molecules orcorrecting the abnormal pathologyor correcting medical conditionsthat can cause the person’s psychiatricsymptoms. Therefore we callthat “corrective psychiatry”. It ismicro-psychiatry just as you have“microsurgery”. Here you have toreattach a lost limb to the body, readjust blood vessels, readjustmuscles and so forth. Thus we maysay that we are correcting somethingthat was incorrect before orwhich needed to be corrected,So in orthomolecular psychiatrywe are not only correcting vitaminand mineral deficiencies, butalso correcting high levels of toxicheavy metals such as lead andmercury poisoning. Other heavymetals are cadmium, arsenic, thallium, silver, gold, bismuth, antimony– all poisons.Dispute about definitionIn 1979 I stated the following inthe Medical Journal of Australia,July 14 th , p. 40 –Finally, I would like to clarifywhat I believe orthomolcular psychiatryis all about. Megavitamintherapy is not synonymous with it.It is only a subspeciality. The first half of the definition oforthomolecular psychiatry was re-corded as :Orthomolecular Psychiatry isthe study of genetic, metabolic, endocrine, immunological andtoxic disturbances that are contributingand perpetuating, exacerbatingor even causing the psychiatricsymptomatology. The second half of the 1979 definitionof orthomolecular psychiatryis :"It is the investigation of vitamin(coenzyme) levels, mineral (cofactor)levels ( or toxic levels oflead, copper, and so on), hormonelevels (we cannot measureendorphin levels, exorphin levelsor prostaglandin levels at the moment),immunoglobulin levels (especiallyIgA and IgM, electrolytelevels (especially bicarbonate, calcium, blood sugars, and so on). What can be corrected is correctedand the patient is followed up regularly."Note when a definition is in twohalves you have the first half of thedefinition, evidence, truth plus secondhalf of the definition, evidence, truth = the complete or whole definition, whole evidence and wholetruth and thus it is also the legaldefinition. However, gullible governmentpsychiatrists and politicians believed“orthomolecular medicine”was about “many psychiatric illnessesand organic disorders affectingthe central nervous system”being “ the result of deficientintake of heavy metals” and “excessive”intake of vitamins.Unfortunately, as shown in adocument by the Royal Australianand New Zealand College ofPsychiatry (RANZCP) PositionStatement of #24 – their latest –July 2004 my definition of 1979was altered, abbreviated by leavingout the comma after ‘genetic’and before the word “metabolic”and the word “the” out before “psychiatricsymptomatology”. Thiscompletely changed the meaningof that definition, because withoutthat comma, instead of many differenttypes of genetic disturbancesbeing discussed, the College hasrestricted it to four only. Thus onlyfour genetic disturbances are considered. Now the definition looks at geneticmetabolic, genetic endocrine, genetic immunological and genetictoxic disturbances and we don’tlook at genetic neurological, geneticrespiratory, geneticneoplastic, genetic gastrointestinal, genetic haemopoietic, geneticcardiovascular and so on. None ofthe other genetic conditions arelooked at by altering it.Has anybody ever heard of leadpoisoning or mercury poisoningbeing genetic? Or an opportunisticpathogen being genetic? Areside effects of drugs genetic? Areradioactive material and pesticide/herbicide poisoning genetic? What genetic conditions are associatedwith too much lead ormercury? What conditions are dueto low levels or deficient intake ofheavy metals? There are none. Norare there illnesses due to deficientintake of heavy minerals (blacksands such as rutile, zircon orilmenite, etc as falsely believedThe Hypoglycemic Health Newsletter December, 2006, Vol 22 No 3- 3 -
