The Board ofEducation has appointed Tom Pye as AssistantPrincipal of Finley Middle School. Mr. Pye is not anewcomer to the Glen Cove Community and wasalready a part of the Finley Family. For the last twoand a half years Mr. Pye has served as theChairperson of Science. We are happy to have Mr.Pye in his new capacity. I know that his experience,knowledge, and dedication to the Glen Covecommunity will prove to be a tremendous asset tothe faculty, staff, and, most importantly, the studentsof Finley Middle School.The addition of a second assistant principal willallow us to more effectively serve our student body.Mr. Carroll and Mr. Pye will each be responsible forthe management of a caseload of students. They willpartner with each of our guidance counselors inmeeting the needs of their respective caseloads. Mr. Pye will be the assistant principal assigned to the7 th grade (Mr. Sirakis’ caseload) and the Frisch Teamon the 6 th grade (Mr. Molina’s caseload). I hope youwill all join me in welcoming Mr. Pye in this newcapacity.Last month we came together to recognize studentswho achieved Honor Roll and High Honor Roll. Inall, 210 students, in grades 6-8, were recognized. Thecriterion for making Honor Roll is a minimum gradeof 80 in each class as well as an overall averagebetween 84.5 and 89.4. For High Honor Roll (alsoknown as the Principal’s Academic Award), astudent must receive a minimum grade of 80 in eachclass as well as an overall average above an 89.5.Congratulations to all! We hope that our nextceremony will give us a chance to recognize an evengreater number of students.On a separate note, we would like you to know thatas part of our post-Sandy Hook security measures,we will be increasing the number of safety drills,including lockdown and lockout drills; some ofwhich will be unannounced.In closing, I want to take this opportunity to remindparents of the many ways students can reportinstances of harassment or bullying. Our webpagehas a link where students can reportharassment/bullying that they experience or witness.The online reports are instantly sent to me directlyand are addressed immediately. Students can alsodrop a note in one of our three “NoBullying/Suggestion Boxes” that are located in themain hallway near the trophy case, in the guidancesuite, and in our cafeteria. All reporting, includingthose made via our website, can be anonymous.Please take a few moments to explore the link on ourwebpage with your child and to remind him/herthat: If they see something, they should say something. Iknow that many students are often reluctant to comeforward and speak up. Please know that we arecommitted to providing a safe environment free offear and intimidation.
