(An abstract should aim to give an informative and concise summary of the report in up to 300 words). Aardvark Clearmine Ltd have upgraded their Aardvark flail unit, a system that has an already proven track record for detonating mines and removing UXO and debris from mine affected land. DERA undertook testing and evaluation of the system on behalf of DFID (the Department for International Development). The machine offered for trialing was the MK IV Aardvark Flail, which performed well throughout the trial completing all the tests adequately. Overall, the objectives of the trial, testing the improved power and performance, were achieved by demonstrating the concept of using a flail to clear mines and dense foliage from various terrain. As with most mechanical clearance devices the application of this equipment has to be in the context of the mine threat, type of terrain, climatic and environmental conditions and of the overall demining operation. 10b.
