• To promote GNSS user interests, increase <strong>the</strong> level <strong>of</strong> awareness, improve <strong>the</strong> quality andfacilitate utilisation <strong>of</strong> GNSS services, particularly in developing countries; and• To propose specific recommendations on global co-ordination and co-operation.Related activities• National and international meetings and conferences concerning GNSS applications;• Series <strong>of</strong> United Nations/United States <strong>of</strong> America Regional Workshops and <strong>the</strong>International Meeting <strong>of</strong> Experts on <strong>the</strong> Use and Applications <strong>of</strong> GNSS, organised within<strong>the</strong> framework <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> United Nations Programme on Space Applications in 2001 and2002;• United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs/American Institute <strong>of</strong> Aeronautics andAstronautics International Workshop on Space Co-operation, Working Group on GNSS(Seville, March 2001);• Regular meetings <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Civil GPS Service Interface Committee and its InternationalSubcommittee (CGSIC/ISC);• Relevant meetings <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> International Telecommunication Union (ITU), including WorldRadiocommunication Conference 2003 (WRC-2003);• Relevant meetings <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> European Union (EU) and <strong>the</strong> European Space Agency (ESA);• Relevant meetings <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> International Maritime Organization (IMO); and• Relevant meetings <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO).Work plan• To compile information on national and international outreach activities designed topromote <strong>the</strong> use <strong>of</strong> GNSS for sustainable development, economic growth and scientificresearch;• To compile information on <strong>the</strong> level <strong>of</strong> awareness and capacity <strong>of</strong> developing countries touse GNSS services and applications;• To conduct an inventory <strong>of</strong> requirements <strong>of</strong> developing countries for GNSS services andapplications and identify gaps in meeting those requirements;• To consider ways in which entities <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> United Nations system, non-governmentalentities and international organizations and Member States <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> United Nations couldplay a role in filling those gaps;• To request o<strong>the</strong>r entities <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> United Nations, through <strong>the</strong> Office for Outer SpaceAffairs, to <strong>report</strong> on <strong>the</strong>ir use <strong>of</strong> GNSS to meet <strong>the</strong>ir respective mandates; and• To evaluate <strong>the</strong> results <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> series <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> United Nations regional workshops on GNSSorganised within <strong>the</strong> framework <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> United Nations Programme on SpaceApplications, with a view to identifying common <strong>the</strong>mes.2
Product4. The product <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> work <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Action Team is a <strong>report</strong> with information on relevantnational and international activities on promoting use, access to and quality <strong>of</strong> GNSS services.The <strong>report</strong> includes proposals for specific recommendations to <strong>the</strong> Committee on <strong>the</strong> PeacefulUses <strong>of</strong> Outer Space and o<strong>the</strong>r relevant United Nations bodies, non-governmental entities, as wellas United Nations Member States and international organizations concerning development, coordinationand increased use <strong>of</strong> GNSS, particularly for <strong>the</strong> benefit <strong>of</strong> developing countries. The<strong>report</strong> would be submitted through <strong>the</strong> Scientific and Technical Subcommittee to <strong>the</strong> Committee.Schedule <strong>of</strong> meetings5. Meetings <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Action Team have been scheduled on <strong>the</strong> margins <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> meetings <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>Committee on <strong>the</strong> Peaceful Uses <strong>of</strong> Outer Space and its Scientific and Technical Subcommittee,as well as in conjunction with <strong>the</strong> activities organised by <strong>the</strong> Office for Outer Space Affairs.6.
