EGNOS trials in Africa Regi<strong>on</strong>428. ASECNA (Agence pour la Sécurité de la Navigati<strong>on</strong> Aérienne en Afrique et Madagascar)has performed flight trials at Yaounde, Camero<strong>on</strong>, <strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> occasi<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> fourteenth ICAO AFIAPIRG meeting (AFI Planning and Implementati<strong>on</strong> Regi<strong>on</strong>al Group), which took place in May2003. The trials were c<strong>on</strong>ducted with <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> EGNOS System Test-Bed with a set <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> RIMS installedin <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Central, Equatorial African regi<strong>on</strong>. L<strong>on</strong>ger term data collecti<strong>on</strong> have c<strong>on</strong>firmed <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>feasibility <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> a SBAS service <strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> regi<strong>on</strong> for APV I performance (approach with verticalguidance and a vertical alert limit <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> 50 meters). Detailed analyses <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> i<strong>on</strong>osphere scintillati<strong>on</strong>phenomena are <strong>on</strong> going. The ESTB trials will be extended to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> South Africa regi<strong>on</strong> during2004.Training opportunities in GNSS in Africa429. Following <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> United Nati<strong>on</strong>s General Assembly Resoluti<strong>on</strong> 45/72 <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> December 1990,<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> United Nati<strong>on</strong>s established two regi<strong>on</strong>al training centres <strong>on</strong> space science and technologyeducati<strong>on</strong> in Africa, namely in Nigeria and Morocco. These centres have been c<strong>on</strong>ducting bothshort- and l<strong>on</strong>g-term training <strong>on</strong> various aspects <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> GNSS.430. In additi<strong>on</strong> to that, as far back as 1975, two regi<strong>on</strong>al centres have been established to beleading applicati<strong>on</strong>-training centres in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> fields <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> GNSS for surveying, mapping and remotesensing. These centres, which are located in Nairobi, Kenya and Ile-Ife, Nigeria, in c<strong>on</strong>juncti<strong>on</strong>with <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> affiliated United Nati<strong>on</strong>s regi<strong>on</strong>al centres menti<strong>on</strong>ed above, are well equipped with highcalibre pr<str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g>essi<strong>on</strong>als with capacity to meet <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> training requirements <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> African countries.431.
