EGNOS trials in Africa Region428. ASECNA (Agence pour la Sécurité de la Navigation Aérienne en Afrique et Madagascar)has performed flight trials at Yaounde, Cameroon, on <strong>the</strong> occasion <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> fourteenth ICAO AFIAPIRG meeting (AFI Planning and Implementation Regional Group), which took place in May2003. The trials were conducted with <strong>the</strong> EGNOS System Test-Bed with a set <strong>of</strong> RIMS installedin <strong>the</strong> Central, Equatorial African region. Longer term data collection have confirmed <strong>the</strong>feasibility <strong>of</strong> a SBAS service on <strong>the</strong> region for APV I performance (approach with verticalguidance and a vertical alert limit <strong>of</strong> 50 meters). Detailed analyses <strong>of</strong> ionosphere scintillationphenomena are on going. The ESTB trials will be extended to <strong>the</strong> South Africa region during2004.Training opportunities in GNSS in Africa429. Following <strong>the</strong> United Nations General Assembly Resolution 45/72 <strong>of</strong> December 1990,<strong>the</strong> United Nations established two regional training centres on space science and technologyeducation in Africa, namely in Nigeria and Morocco. These centres have been conducting bothshort- and long-term training on various aspects <strong>of</strong> GNSS.430. In addition to that, as far back as 1975, two regional centres have been established to beleading application-training centres in <strong>the</strong> fields <strong>of</strong> GNSS for surveying, mapping and remotesensing. These centres, which are located in Nairobi, Kenya and Ile-Ife, Nigeria, in conjunctionwith <strong>the</strong> affiliated United Nations regional centres mentioned above, are well equipped with highcalibre pr<strong>of</strong>essionals with capacity to meet <strong>the</strong> training requirements <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> African countries.431.
