IV.GNSS APPLICATIONSA. General applicati<strong>on</strong>s <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> GNSS310. The core c<strong>on</strong>stellati<strong>on</strong>s <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> GNSS (GPS and GLONASS) are being used in a variety <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g>applicati<strong>on</strong>s. Some <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> most promising areas <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> applicati<strong>on</strong>s are:• Intelligent Transportati<strong>on</strong> Systems-ITS (Ground, Air and Marine Transportati<strong>on</strong> C<strong>on</strong>trol);• Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM);• GPS cards;• Survey mapping/GIS;• Military; and• Timing and frequency disseminati<strong>on</strong>.311. There are many o<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r areas in which <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> GNSS market is expected to grow significantlyin <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> near future. These areas are:• Mobile ph<strong>on</strong>es;• Development <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> intelligent highway <strong>systems</strong>;• Anti-collisi<strong>on</strong> <strong>systems</strong> in railways and land transport; and• Precisi<strong>on</strong> agriculture.312. In future, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> GNSS market will predominantly c<strong>on</strong>sist <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> use <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> GNSS chipsets inmobile ph<strong>on</strong>es. GPS is currently <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> de-facto standard for <strong>satellite</strong>-based navigati<strong>on</strong> services. TheGPS market in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> year 2000 was worth US $ 8 billi<strong>on</strong>, and in 2003 worth about US $ 15 billi<strong>on</strong>.It is estimated that <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> world market for GNSS in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> year 2005 would be in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> vicinity <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> US $20 billi<strong>on</strong>.313. The use <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> GNSS in intelligent highway <strong>systems</strong>, train collisi<strong>on</strong> avoidance <strong>systems</strong> andprecisi<strong>on</strong> farming is expected to increase phenomenally after 2005. However, this comp<strong>on</strong>ent <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g><str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> market is expected to remain c<strong>on</strong>centrated in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> developed countries.Priority <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>mes for use <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> GNSS technology for social and ec<strong>on</strong>omic development <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g>developing countries314. The existing core c<strong>on</strong>stellati<strong>on</strong>s from <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> United States, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Russian Federati<strong>on</strong>, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>planned European GALILEO and space-segment augmentati<strong>on</strong>s by <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> United States, Europe,Japan, India and several o<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r countries have provided an opportunity for <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> developingcountries to use GNSS in various applicati<strong>on</strong>s for improving <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> quality <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> life. Some <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>applicati<strong>on</strong>s are:a) Use <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> GNSS chipsets in mobile ph<strong>on</strong>es:• The GPS market in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> year 2002 was estimated to be about US $ 13 billi<strong>on</strong>. The largestcomp<strong>on</strong>ent <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> sales has been in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> car navigati<strong>on</strong> market so far. It is estimated thatmobile ph<strong>on</strong>es would be equipped with positi<strong>on</strong> locati<strong>on</strong> chipsets for emergency services;and• The mobile ph<strong>on</strong>e market for GNSS chipsets is expected to dominate <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> sales in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>future. Many developing countries, where <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> density <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> mobile ph<strong>on</strong>es is low, are55
