589. Project 2:Pilot Projects (4 projects):590. The following pilot projects are recommended for funding assistance. The scope <strong>of</strong>assistance required have to do first with a feasibility study which would be a requisite tool toaccess key financial institutions for pilot project financing. The two projects recommended are:1. Intelligent Transportation System – for African and Eastern Europe Region:• Africa: Digital mapping <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Pan-African highway (road and rail)• Vehicle tracking and management system.2. Inland waterway marine transportation system – for <strong>the</strong> Americas and Asia and <strong>the</strong>Pacific Region.Objectives:• Cost-benefit analysis data concerning <strong>the</strong> benefits <strong>of</strong> GNSS for increasing safety,developing <strong>the</strong> economy or generally improving <strong>the</strong> transport infrastructure should beprovided;• Demonstrate <strong>the</strong> real and potential benefits <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> applications <strong>of</strong> GNSS in <strong>the</strong>transportation sector;• Support Member States to establish enabling-infrastructure for GNSS applications in <strong>the</strong>transportation sector; and• Support Member States to access funding assistance for project implementation.Potential Impacts:• Fleet management system would provide a large market-based for <strong>the</strong> haulage industryand common transport establishment;• Establishment <strong>of</strong> enabling-infrastructure for GNSS applications in <strong>the</strong> transportationsector would be in place; and• Motivation <strong>of</strong> service manufacturers and enlargement <strong>of</strong> user communities.Strategies:Implementation Plan Responsible Party Time Frame1.
