THE NEED
WHY WE NEED YOUR HELP NOW
When children with special needs join a TASK sports team or social club, good things We wish to reach more of these children, who would aim higher and achieve more
happen. They develop new skills. They gain confidence in their abilities. They try harder. if they experienced the personal success our programs inspire. We also want to
They discover what it feels like to win.
support their families, whose daily challenges are far greater than most of us can
TASK – Team Activities for Special
Kids – offers the St. Louis area’s
imagine and who value the camaraderie and support
they share with other TASK families walking a similar
path. We want to do these things, and more. But we
are limited by space.
for youth with special needs. Since
Since our founding in 1996, TASK has leased fields,
1996, we have grown to welcome
The Task ahead of us is greaT.
more than 800 participants each
But it’s like we tell our athletes: we know we can do it! around St. Louis, patchworking together programs
year to our basketball, kickball,
We just need a little extra help from you.
to accommodate the very special needs of the
soccer and various other sports,
children we serve.
accepting each athlete as he or she
is, and adapting our athletic programs to meet their individual needs. Many are also
active in our social club and summer camp programs that help build social and life skills
To accommodate the growing demand for our services,
the time has come to create a home of our own. We need:
in a safe, nurturing, “bully-free” environment. That’s the good news.
» an accessible, safe and wonderful place that will enable us to expand our programs
and serve as many as 5,000 of our region’s participants with special needs each year.
The more humbling reality is that for every child with special needs we serve, there are
at least five or six more who could benefit equally from our services. There are more
» a positive, welcoming environment where youth with a wide range of abilities can
than 27,000 children in the Special School District alone. That doesn’t include the
be encouraged to reach their potential.
thousands of kids with special needs in Missouri’s St. Charles or Jefferson counties, or » a secure, adaptive facility where St. Louis area parents can feel comfortable leaving
the three Illinois counties we also serve.
their children for sports and social activities.
Just the way I am!
“TASK
showed
me that all kids can have the
opportunity to participate
in team activities and social
play. Through volunteering,
I found my passion in life.
Because of TASK, I learned
about occupational therapy,
for which I am currently
in the final month of the
masters program at Wash U.
I owe so much of my joy and
success to Team Activities
THE SOLUTION
TASK is embarking on a $3.5 million Capital Campaign to
fund our own activities center and athletic fields. Whether
we build a new building, or purchase and adapt an existing
one, our plans call for an accessible, centrally located center
that includes:
» Basketball courts
» Outdoor fields
» fitness room
» Kitchen facilities
With a home we can call our own, we will be able to:
» Computer facilities
» Dance studio
» Multi-purpose/game room
» Office/storage space
Increase the number of youth with special needs we serve.
TASK currently serves approximately 800 participants each year, age five and up,
who face a wide range of physical, mental and emotional challenges. That is just
a fraction of the children in our area who might benefit from our programs. With
the facility we envision, we intend to serve as many as 5,000 youth a year.
Expand the services we offer.
Today, TASK offers more than a dozen different athletic, recreational and social
programs. With your help, we intend to triple the number of programs, expanding
further beyond sports to include day camps and a variety of therapy, social and life
skill services.
Consolidate our facilities.
Today, our administrative offices are rented in one building, and we lease activity
space in several south and southwest St. Louis County locations. The move will
allow us to consolidate our operations in a single location, eliminating our current
logistic challenges. It will also allow us to triple our program offerings without
tripling our rent, enabling us to maximize the use of our space year round.
Anyone who has ever witnessed a child standing alone on the sidelines, waiting to be picked
for a team, understands why TASK exists. So does anyone who has ever been bullied or teased
for being different.
Since our founding in 1996, TASK has believed in the potential and worth of every child,
particularly those with special needs. Our goal is to help them feel like an important,
contributing member of their team and our community.
We do it by:
» focusing on skill development, rather than competition. Every TASK athlete is a winner!
» adapting our programs to each participant’s special needs. No one is turned away.
» offering sports and recreational activities that appeal to a wide range of interests.
You can help us serve more of these deserving children by supporting our capital campaign. We
thank you for your generous support.
A MESSAgE fROM OUR CHAIRPERSONS
As parents and supporters of TASK, we appreciate the skills and abilities TASK develops and
we are proud to support their mission. We have seen, firsthand, that special young athletes not
only learn the skills they are taught – like how to throw a ball or swing a golf club – but also
learn to develop courage and express joy; to work together and cheer each other on; to build
strength and confidence. It is for these children – our children – that we readily accept the
challenge of helping TASK reach their Capital Campaign goal.
TASK is so much more than the chance for kids with special needs to learn athletic skills; TASK
is a community. A community where families and kids can come together, sharing our ups and
downs with other families who know what we’re going through. Celebrating the victories and
comforting the defeats, big and little, as part of a community. One whose common bond is our
love for our children and our desire to find a place we they feel they fit in and can experience
sports and the everyday joys of being a kid.
Please join us in supporting TASK’s plan to create a place where these special young athletes
can play, thrive and succeed.
about Task
TASK was founded in 1996 by an adaptive physical education teacher
who formed a tee-ball league for 26 children with special needs who
had no other place to play. It has since evolved into a year-round
organization that welcomes children ages five and up, and offers more
than a dozen athletic, recreational and social programs to more than 800
participants. Participating families pay fees that cover a portion of our
operating costs. The remaining costs are raised through fundraisers.
of seeing them belong.
