4.4.1 Place of Antenatal CareIn the 2007-08 THMIS, women who delivered a child in the five years before the survey wereasked about the place where they received antenatal care. The care was that specifically to check thepregnancy and not for other reasons.Table 4.8 shows that 51 percent of women in Tanzania receive antenatal care at dispensariesand 27 percent at health centres. As expected, very few women receive antenatal care at a referral orregional hospital (1 and 3 percent, respectively). The small number of women receiving antenatal careat district hospitals (9 percent) may be related to the distance to a regional hospital.Urban women are more likely to receive antenatal care at a district hospital (17 percent) thanrural women (6 percent). More than half of women in rural areas receive antenatal care at dispensaries(55 percent). In the Mainland, women in the Central Zone are more likely to receive antenatal carefrom district hospitals (15 percent) than women in other zones. However, women in the Lake Zoneare more likely to receive antenatal care at health centres (43 percent). District hospitals are morepopular among women with higher education and women in the highest wealth quintiles.48 | Fertility and Reproductive Health
