The 2007-08 THMIS included aquestion for all women who had givenbirth in the five years preceding the survey,regarding whether their most recentbirth had been registered with the civilauthorities. <strong>Survey</strong> results show thatregistration of children in Mainl<strong>and</strong><strong>Tanzania</strong> is low. Only 20 percent ofchildren under five years are registered<strong>and</strong> of these, only 6 percent have a birthcertificate. In Zanzibar, 90 percent ofchildren under five years are registered<strong>and</strong> 67 percent have a birth certificate.Registration of children under age twoyears is slightly higher (23 percent) thanthat of children age two to four years(21 percent). These figures indicate thatlittle progress has been made towardsincreasing the proportion of births thatare registered. There are substantial differentialsin birth registration by residence,region, <strong>and</strong> wealth quintile.In the Mainl<strong>and</strong>, registration ismost complete in Dar es Salaam City(77 percent) followed by other urbanareas (35 percent). Only 15 percent ofbirths in rural areas in the Mainl<strong>and</strong> areregistered. Across regions in the Mainl<strong>and</strong>,the highest registration rates are inDar es Salaam (75 percent), Kilimanjaro(50 percent), <strong>and</strong> Tanga (44 percent).Regions with lowest registration ratesare Tabora (4 percent), Manyara (5percent) <strong>and</strong> Kigoma (6 percent).
