12.2 ORPHANS AND VULNERABLE CHILDRENOrphaned children present a serious social, emotional, and economic burden for society. Childrenwhose parents are ill for an extended period or who live in households where other adults sufferfrom chronic illness can experience significant hardship, because serious illness may limit theresources available to feed, clothe, and educate the youngest members of a family. Table 12.2 showsthe prevalence of orphans and children who are vulnerable.
