carrying mosquitoes. Much of the fieldwork for this survey was conducted between October andMarch, which is a period of low rainfall and low levels of malaria transmission.Overall, 36 percent of childrenunder age five slept under amosquito net the night before thesurvey (35 percent in MainlandTanzania and 69 percent in Zanzibar). These figures are higher thanthose reported in the 2004-05TDHS (31 percent in Mainland and55 percent in Zanzibar). RegardingITN use, 25 percent of childrenunder age five in Mainland Tanzaniaand 59 percent in Zanzibar sleptunder an ITN the night before thesurvey.Use of mosquito nets andITNs is associated with children’sage. Younger children are morelikely than older children to sleepunder a mosquito net. There is nodifference by sex in the use ofmosquito nets, but urban childrenare more likely than rural childrento sleep under an ITN (49 and 21percent, respectively).Table 11.3 shows the proportionof all women and pregnantwomen who slept under a mosquitonet. Similar to the pattern for childrenunder five, pregnant women inMainland Tanzania (26 percent) areless likely than those in Zanzibar(51 percent) to sleep under an ITN.However, this is a substantial increasecompared with the findingsof the 2004-05 TDHS (15 percentfor Mainland and 20 percent forZanzibar). A programme of subsidizedmosquito net distribution targetingpregnant women and childrenunder five in Zanzibar maycontribute to the greater use of ITNsthere.Table 11.2 Use of mosquito nets by childrenPercentage of children under five years of age who slept under a mosquito net(treated or untreated), an ever-treated mosquito net, and an insecticide-treatednet (ITN) the night before the survey, by background characteristics, TanzaniaHMIS 2007-08Percentagewho sleptunder anynet thepast nightPercentagewho sleptunder anever-treatednet thepast night 1Percentagewho sleptunder anITN thepast night 2BackgroundcharacteristicNumber ofchildrenAge in months
