7.8 PREVALENCE OF MEDICAL INJECTIONSNonsterile injections can pose a risk of infection with HIV and other diseases. To measure thepotential risk of HIV transmission through medical injections, respondents in the 2007-08 THMISwere asked if they had received an injection in the past 12 months and, if so, the number of injections.Table 7.8 shows that 35 percent of women and 21 percent of men reported receiving an injection inthe 12 months preceding the survey, with an average of 1.2 injections for women and 0.8 for men.The data show that the likelihood of receiving an injection in the 12 months before the surveyvaries by education for both women and men. For women, the proportion ranges from 24 percentamong women with no education to 39 percent among women with secondary or higher education.Among men, the proportion ranges from 15 percent among men with no education to 25 percentamong men with secondary or higher education. The proportion receiving injections increases withwealth quintile for both women and men.Regarding the safety of injections, 98 percent of women and 96 percent of men who receivedan injection in the past 12 months reported that for their most recent injection, the syringe and needlewere taken from a new, unopened package.90 | HIV/AIDS-Related Behaviour
