Concrete <strong>Connectors</strong> & AnchorsConcrete <strong>Connectors</strong> & AnchorsANCHORING SYSTEMSConcrete AnchorsDesigned to Meet 2006 IBCBuilding Codes Are Changing – New Anchor Designs Now RequiredMost states across the country have nowadopted the 2006 International Building Code(IBC) and many jurisdictions within each stateare now enforcing the new code. As a result, engineers and designers are increasingly beingrequired to specify anchors designed and testedto meet the new requirements of the code. The2006 IBC requires that Ultimate Strength Designmethodology be used when designing structuralanchorages within buildings and other structures. This affects how and when post-installed concreteanchors are specifi ed and what products will besuitable for use. When designing concrete anchorages, designersare now being required to consider, among otherthings, whether conditions exist that may causethe concrete to crack. If it’s determined suchconditions do exist, anchors designed and testedfor use in cracked concrete must be specifi ed.If it’s determined there is no risk of concretecracking, the designer may choose to specifyanchors approved for use in uncracked concrete. In either case, Ultimate Strength Designmethodology is required as part of the 2006 IBC.Common conditions that cause crackingof concrete:• Concrete in tension – such as in theunderside of a slab• Concrete elements located in areasprone to seismic activity• Other factors that contribute tocracking include:• External short term loads(such as high winds)• Temperature variations• Shrinkage during curingSimpson Strong-Tie Anchor Systems ® has, for years, been at the forefront of developing anchors for use in bothcracked and uncracked concrete.
