Page 2 www.southpark2-hoa.org / SouthPark 2 TIMES / December 2008Winter Tips, continued from front pageIf on vacation, turn your heater thermostat to a minimum of 55degrees. If the kitchen or bathrooms have plumbing on an outsidewall, open the cabinet doors under the sinks. This will allow warmair circulation around the pipes. If possible, always turn off thewater to the washing machine. Not necessarily due to cold weatherbut a good habit, the rubber hoses have been know to rupture. If you are gone for an extended period of time and a rupture hasoccurred, you may be return to quite a mess.If your townhome is prone to freezing pipes, you might consider adding insulation orheat tape to the location(s) where the pipes generally freeze. Continued freezing in a particularlocation weakens the copper pipe and eventually may rupture and flood yourhome.During long periods of freezing temperatures open the cabinet doors under the sinksif the kitchen or bathrooms have plumbing on a outside wall. This will allow warm aircirculation around the pipes. If you experience a frozen pipe and have access to it, attempt to thaw it out with ablow dryer. NEVER use an open flame or to torch to thaw pipes. If the location is notknown, you probably should contact a plumbing company or maintenance company forassistance. If the pipe is ruptured, when it thaws expect a flood.Since a ruptured pipe cannot be determined until it thaws, it is recommended that younot leave your home until the pipe has thawed or you had it thawed by a plumber or maintenancecompany.Know where the water shut-off in your basement or crawlspace is located. In thecase of a ruptured pipe, you may need to shut off the entire water supply to yourhome.Make sure the water shut-off valve is functional. Many owners have had to replacethese valves. It’s a good practice to operate (exercise) this valve 2-3 times per year tomake sure if will turn-off and back on. When not routinely operated, generally over timethese valves corrode and when the handle is turned it breaks off. Thus, the only way toturn your water off is at the water meter, which turns of the water to all the townhomesin the building. If valve does not shut-off or turn back on, call a plumbing company toreplace it immediately.Parking RemindersGuest Parking: Residents are reminded that parking in the guest parking areas is prohibited. These areas are only to be used by non-resident guests. Page 4 www.southpark2-hoa.org / SouthPark 2 TIMES / December 2008Dandelions, Lightening Bugs and HeliumJust what do dandelions, lightening bugs and helium have incommon? They share a category titled “things that could disappearbefore we have great-grandchildren.”While we focus efforts on energy shortage and depletion of oiland gas reserves, which are very important, we are letting thesethree little things fly away right under our noses. Well, it is timeto make a stand on behalf of what we might lose.DANDELIONS: Who knew that this most prolific invader ofgreen turf might be the largest support system for thehoney bee? As we routinely go about abolishing thelovely yellow flower from our neatly manicuredlawns, are we also killing of the bees that pollinateour crops and are a vital link in the food chain? Millionsof bees have disappeared over the last few years and there is a realconcern that the little critters that diligently produce our honeyand are a farmer’s best friend, cross-pollinating crops, may vanishforever... if we effectively eliminate the dandelion!LIGHTENING BUGS: A little understood and my mostfavorite creature on earth. These tiny flying light-bulbs haveParking Reminders, continued from page 3mits shall be made to the Public Services Department located at2255 W. Berry Ave., between the hours of 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Theapplicant shall be required to show proof of residency within thedistrict by providing one of the following; valid Colorado Driver’sLicense, valid landlord lease agreement, prior-year’s property-taxstatement or current utility bill for the residence. The name of theapplicant must be listed on one of these forms of residency.entertained many generations of children on warm summernights. “Fireflies”, as they are also known, live and breed inmoist, dark parts of the country, mostly in high humidity areas, continued on page 6Removal of Dead Flower and PlantersNow that fall has arrived, homeowners are asked to removeand relocate their flower planters, pots, hanging baskets, etc.,from the common areas around the townhomes to the garage orinside the patio below the fence for storage. There is no doubt thatduring the summer months, the potted flowers add color, interest, and create “pride of community” to SouthPark. SouthPark hasbeen recognized throughout the metro area as a quality community. The beauty of the planted and potted flowers gives the communityan appearance that tells the visitors that we care. The covenants for our community state that any flowers orplantings by the homeowner cannot be in the common area. However, in the past few years, we have realized that planting ofannuals (seasonal flowers) and perennials add color and breaks upthe brown and green colors of the shrubs and ground cover in thecommunity. However, the now-dead annual flowers and perennialplants that have wilted tops need to be removed and the commonarea cleaned up. By allowing these plants to remain, gives a neglectedor “not cared for” appearance to the community.Soon, an inspection of the community will take place toensure that residents have removed the planters, baskets, deadannual flowers and cut off the tops on perennial plants in the commonarea. Your cooperation will be greatly appreciated.

Talking with people who have been in Colorado for a longtime, many remember chasing them as children, but not in the lasttwenty-five to thirty years. Not a lot is known about the lighteningbug, but many scientists feel that their breeding has beeninterrupted by man-made street lights and crime prevention lightson homes and businesses, which stay on all night, confusing thepoor small critters, and reeking havoc with their family life.HELIUM: Again, who knew? All those balloons we freelyfill and then let go just to watch them glide awayinto space were taking with them a non-renewablecommodity; helium! The reason we love to seehelium balloons float above earth is also the reasonfor the demise of the resource: helium islighter than our air. When helium is released intothe atmosphere, it simply keeps going, up, up and away, escapingout beyond our earth’s atmosphere. Once outside the reach of ouratmosphere, the helium is gone forever and the current pockets ofthe gas, which are mined from under the earth’s crust, are quicklybeing depleted. So, what can we do to insure that at least one more generationgets the benefit of these tiny, valuable resources? Some of theanswers are easy... instead of spraying the dandelions with toxicpoisons to kill the plants, let the little yellow flowers bloom, then, just before they go to seed, pick them. The leaves of the dandelionplant make a lovely salad base, as long as they haven’t beensprayed with weed killer. Picking the flowers won’t completelyeliminate the plants, the bees will be happier, the farmers will behappier and more productive and it won’t poison the ground withchemicals that will probably kill the bees the flowers and eventuallyus.Saving the lightening bugs is a social decision. Shutting downthe obnoxious, high-voltage lights that blanket most subdivisionsthroughout the night will give the critters a chance to reproduce.Maybe one of these days, if we save the lightening bugs, a scientistsomewhere will figure out how they produce their lovelygreen-gold glow with so little energy and very little heat, and thatknowledge might translate to a new source of lighting energy forus, creating one more renewable source of energy. Turn off yourporch lights after ten p.m., save the electricity, and save the fireflies. In addition to the savings on electricity, we’ll all get a betternight’s sleep, with fewer sleep disturbing beams blastingthrough our windows, and blocking out the light of the stars. It will be tough to tell a child they can’t have dozens of heliumfilled balloons at birthday parties, and those car dealershipsthat put up hundreds of balloons every day will need to stop doingso. We need to save our helium for boosting rocket flights tospace and other important scientific endeavors. I personally willbe sad to give up the brightly colored helium balloons, but will doso willingly if it saves the helium for more serious purposes. It does sound odd that these specific aspects of our lives willdisappear if we don’t change our habits, but they will and ourgrandchildren may not experience the joy and wonder we had aschildren without them! Do your part... save the dandelions, thefireflies and helium!— Mary K. VillalbaCopyright: Oct. 29, 2008

The study followed more than 2,200women ages 78 and older for four years. The women who hadlarger social networks were 26 percent less likely to sufferdementia. While previous studies have pointed to the helpfulness ofsocial engagement, some of the results have been mixed. Forinstance, some studies found that being married was helpful, while other studies found it was not. In this study, however, theresearchers report that marriage didn’t make a difference in thedementia risk; it was the social network that providedthe protection. Those women with at least one dailycontact or more had a lower risk for dementia, and it didn’t matter whether the interaction wasmade face-to-face, via telephone, or through e-mail.YOUR SOUTHPARK REAL ESTATE SPECIALISTTerry Jenni GRI, CRSBroker AssociateRE/MAX AllianceDirect: 303-794-6932www.terryjenni.comTerry Sells SouthPark• Low Commission Fees Year Around• Littleton #1 Home Selling System• High Level Customer Referrals• Your Home Will Be Listed & Featured ON REALTOR.COM, IncludingExterior and Multiple Interior Photos of Your Home, Plus Virtual Tours.• Color Flyers, Open House &New Listing Flyers in SouthPark Newsletter• Help You Stage Your Home For Maximum Results,Including "20 Steps to Help Sell Your Home."SouthPark Real Estate Updatefor December 2008SouthPark Single Family HomesUp to $400,000 $400,000–$475,000 $475,000–PlusFor Sale 2 0 0Under Contract 0 0 0Total Sold 2008 16 2 1Total Sold 2007 14 2 2SouthPark TownhomesUp to $200,000 $200,000–$250,000 $250,000–PlusFor Sale 6 1 3Under Contract 0 3 0Total Sold 2008 9 17 8Total Sold 2007 7 19 6The information is based on MLS data November 15, 2008.Not all of the properties were listed and/or sold by Terry Jenni, RE/MAX Alliance.Ihave enjoyed living in SouthPark for the past 19 years.
