Glossa r yElectronic Stability ProgramADAPTIVE ESP ADAPTIVE ESP is an innovative dynamichandling control system, whichfor the first time also takes the vehicleload into account. It actively interve nesin certain hazardous driving situations,e.g. if there is an imminent riskof skidding, by applying a brakingforce to one or more wheels and adjustingthe engine output as requiredso as to help the driver deal with thehazardous situation. As well as aidingdirectional stability, ADAPTIVE ESP combines the functions of the anti-lockbraking system (ABS), accelerationskid control (ASR), electronic brakeforce distribution (EBD), Brake Assist(BAS) and the optional Start-off assistsystem. ESP trailer stabilisation additionallyprovides for enhanced drivingsafety when towing a trailer.Caution:ADAPTIVE ESP can only act withinthe laws of physics. It is thereforeimpossible for ADAPTIVE ESP toprevent skidding resulting fromaquaplaning, for example. If the driverexceeds the physical limits, evenADAPTIVE ESP will not be able toprevent an accident!Electronic brake forcedistribution (EBD)Electronic brake force distribution(EBV) proportions the braking forcebetween the front and rear wheelsof the van as required, in order to optimisebraking efficiency in all drivingsituations. In this way the system prevents“overbraking” of the rear wheels,which could cause the tail to startsliding. At the same time EBV putsless stress on the front brakes, whichreduces the risk of fading due tooverheating.Brake Assist (BAS)In tests carried out in the drivingsimulator, our research engineersestablished that drivers do not applythe brakes vigorously enough duringemergency braking. This finding ledthem to develop Brake Assist. Fromthe speed at which the brake pedal isdepressed, Brake Assist is able todetect a situation where emergencybraking is required. In such a situationthe system automatically increasesbraking power, aided by theanti-lock braking system (ABS) whichprevents the wheels from locking up.Start-off assist (AAS)Start-off assist, an integral part of theESP which comes as standard onvehicles with automatic transmission,makes it easier to start off on uphillslopes: after the brake pedal is released,the brake pressure is maintainedfor approximately two seconds,allowing the driver to move theirfoot from the brake pedal to the acceleratorwithout having to worry aboutthe vehicle starting to roll. Start-offassist is activated on uphill slopes ofapprox. 4% or steeper. It is not activatedwhen starting off on the flat oron a downhill slope.Acceleration Skid Control (ASR)At the first signs of wheel spin, that isto say if the rotational speed of oneof the drive wheels suddenly increases,ASR intervenes in the engine managementsystem, reduces the enginepower and also intervenes via thebrake system to prevent extendedwheel spin. ASR ensures smoothstart-off and acceleration, withoutext ended wheel spin or sidewaysdrift. The result is improved traction– and safety – particularly on splitfrictionor slippery surfaces.40 Glossary

ESP trailer stabilisationThis system complements ADAPTIVEESP and improves driving safetywhen towing a trailer by preciselybraking the wheels of the towing vehicleand reducing the engine torqueif the trailer starts swinging, thereforehelping the driver to stabilise thevehicle-trailer combination. In theevent of several activations in succession,the applied braking power isincreased continually, resulting in asubstantial reduction in the vehiclespeed.Adaptive brake lightsThe adaptive brake lights enhanceactive safety as they give a clearersignal when the vehicle is braked inan emergency. This is achievedthanks to the fact that all the brakelights start to flash in the event ofa critical braking situation at a speedof 50 km/h or over, warning followingtraffic and shortening the reactiontimes of the drivers. If the vehicle isbraked from a speed of 70 km/h orover to a standstill, the hazard warninglights are activated automatically.Front airbags for driver and co-driverFront airbags for the driver andco-driver are additional componentsof the passive safety system. Theyprovide enhanced protection for thebelted occupants and act togetherwith the seat belts (with belt tensionersand belt-force limiters) as a supplementaryrestraint system.Caution:Airbags in no way remove the needfor occupants to fasten their seatbelts correctly before every journey:an airbag can only provide its fullprotective effect if the occupant iswearing the seat belt correctly.Windowbags and thorax bagsThe Vito can be equipped with windowbagsand thorax bags to complementthe driver and co-driver airbags. In asevere side impact, the windowbagserves to increase the degree of protectionavailable for the head of theoccupant on the impact side. It deploysin the area of the side windows.Housed in the outside bolsters of theseat backrests, thorax bags are designedto provide increased protectionfor the thorax of the seat occupant.Caution:Airbags in no way remove the needfor occupants to fasten their seatbelts correctly before every journey:an airbag can only provide its fullprotective effect if the occupant iswearing the seat belt correctly.All-wheel driveThe permanent all-wheel-drive systemtransfers the engine power to thefront and rear axles on a 35 : 65 basis.Instead of mechanical locking differentials,the vehicle features the 4ETSElectronic Traction System. Thisautomatically applies brake pressureto individual spinning wheels, whilesimultaneously increasing the torqueto wheels with adequate traction.This results in improved traction andbetter handling stability in manysituations: on snow, ice or leaves, onpoor roads, in the wet or when towinga trailer.Diesel particulate filterParticulate emissions per diesel carhave been drastically lowered inrecent years. Nonetheless, the constantlyincreasing number of dieselvehicles means that high levelsof total emissions must be reducedfurther. The diesel particulate filterfrom Mercedes-Benz is a breath offresh air in this respect. It removesmore than 95 percent of the particulatesfrom the exhaust gases. At thesame time a continuous regenerationprocess prevents the filter from becomingclogged – which means thatno fuel additives are needed.Glossary41

Take-back of end-of-life vehicles. Coming full circle. At the end of its long life, you can return your Vito to us for environment-friendly disposal in accordance with theEC End-Of-Life Vehicle Directive. But that day lies a long way off. The take-back of end-of life vehicles applies in accordance with national regulations to vehicles upto 3.5-tonnes gross weight. The Vito has met the statutory requirements governing the suitability of a vehicle’s design for reuse and recycling for a number of yearsnow. A network of vehicle take-back depots and dismantlers has been established which will process your vehicle in an environment-friendly manner. The ways inwhich both vehicles and parts can be recovered are subject to ongoing development and improvement. Consequently, the Vito will be able to comply with any futureincreases in the recycling quota within the stipulated time limits.
