Extreme Networks Data Sheet: Summit X450a SeriesVoice-Class AvailabilityPowered by the ExtremeXOS, Summit X450a supports process recovery and application upgrades without the need fora system reboot. Summit X450a provides the high network availability required for converged applications.Modular Operating System forNon-Stop OperationPreemptive Multitasking and ProtectedMemoryThe Summit X450a series switch allows each of many applications—suchas Open Shortest Path First (OSPF) and SpanningTree Protocol (STP)—to run as separate OS processes that areprotected from each other. This drives increased systemintegrity and inherently protects against DoS attacks.Process Monitoring and RestartExtremeXOS dramatically increases network availability usingprocess monitoring and restart. Each independent OS processis monitored in real time. If a process becomes unresponsive orstops running, it can be automatically restarted.Loadable Software ModulesThe modular design of ExtremeXOS allows the upgrading ofindividual software modules, should this be necessary, leadingto higher availability in the network (see Figure 1).High Availability Network ProtocolsEthernet Automatic Protection Switching(EAPS)EAPS allows the IP network to provide the level of resiliencyand uptime that users expect from their traditional voicenetwork. EAPS is more adaptable than Spanning Tree or RapidSpanning Tree protocols and offers sub-second (less than 50milliseconds) recovery that delivers consistent failover regardlessof the number of VLANs, network nodes or networktopology. Since EAPS allows the network to recover almosttransparently, Voice-over-IP calls will not drop and digital videofeeds will not freeze or pixelize in most situations.Spanning Tree/Rapid Spanning TreeProtocolsThe Summit X450a series supports Spanning Tree (802.1D), PerVLAN Spanning Tree (PVST+), Rapid Spanning Tree (802.1w)and Multiple Instances of Spanning Tree (802.1s) protocols forLayer 2 resiliency.Software-Enhanced AvailabilitySoftware-enhanced availability allows users to remain connectedto the network even if part of the network infrastructureis down. The Summit X450a series continuously checks forproblems in the uplink connections using advanced Layer 3protocols such as OSPF, VRRP and Extreme Standby RouterProtocol (ESRP, supported in Layer 2 or Layer 3), and dynamicallyroutes traffic around the problem.Equal Cost MultipathEqual Cost Multipath (ECMP) routing allows uplinks to be loadbalanced for performance and cost savings while also supportingredundant failover. If an uplink fails, traffic is automaticallyrouted to the remaining uplinks and connectivity is maintained.Link Aggregation (802.3ad)Link aggregation allows trunking of up to eight links on a singlelogical connection, for up to 20 Gigabits per Second (Gbps) ofredundant bandwidth per logical connection.Multi-Switch LAG (M-LAG)M-LAG can address bandwidth limitations and improvenetwork resiliency, in part by routing network traffic aroundbottlenecks, reducing the risks of a single point of failure, andallowing load balancing across multiple switches.Voice-Grade Stacking withSummitStackThe Summit X450a series offers dual stacking interfaces toprovide high-speed 40 Gbps stacking bandwidth. SummitStackstacking architecture is designed to support converged servicessuch as VoIP and video by its highly available, rapid failovercapability with n-1 master redundancy, distributed Layer 2 andLayer 3 switching, link aggregation across the stack anddistributed uplinks. The 40 Gbps SummitStack supports up toeight units in a stack, including any mix of Summit X460, X480,X650, X450a, X450e, and X250e running the same version ofExtremeXOS. It provides sub-second failover for path failureand hitless master/backup failover along with hitless protocolsupport such as OSPF graceful restart and Network Login userauthentication. The Summit X450a switch provides chassis-likemanagement and availability with its SummitStack stackingtechnology (see Figure 2).2

Extreme Networks Data Sheet: Summit X450a SeriesComprehensive Security ManagementImplementing a secure network means providing protection at the network perimeter as well as the core.Summit X450a switches use advanced security functions in protecting your network from known or potential threats.User Authentication and HostIntegrity CheckingNetwork Login and Dynamic Security ProfileSummit X450a series switches support a comprehensive rangeof Network Login options by providing an 802.1x agent-basedapproach, a Web-based (agent-less) login capability, and aMAC-based authentication model. With these modes of NetworkLogin, only authorized users and devices can connect to thenetwork and be assigned to the appropriate VLAN. The UniversalPort feature available in Summit X450a lets you implementDynamic Security Profiles with Network Login and allows you toimplement fine-grained and robust security policies. Uponauthentication, the switch can load dynamic ACL/QoS profilesfor a user or group of users to deny/allow access to the applicationservers or segments within the network.Multiple Supplicant SupportConverged network designs often involve the use of sharedports that represent a potential vulnerability in a network.Multiple supplicant capabilities on a switch allow it to uniquelyrecognize and apply the appropriate policies for each user ordevice on a shared port.Media Access Control (MAC) LockdownMAC security allows the lockdown of a port to a given MACaddress and limiting the number of MAC addresses on a port. This can be used to dedicate ports to specific hosts or devicessuch as VoIP phones or printers, and avoid abuse of the port—acapability that can be especially useful in environments such ashotels. In addition, an aging timer can be configured for theMAC lockdown, protecting the network from the effects ofattacks using (often rapidly) changing MAC addresses.IP SecurityExtremeXOS IP security framework protects the networkinfrastructure, network services such as DHCP and DNS, andhost computers from spoofing and man-in-the-middle attacks. It also protects the network from statically configured and/orspoofed IP addresses. It builds an external trusted database ofMAC/IP/port bindings so you know where traffic from a specificaddress comes from for immediate defense.Identity ManagerIdentity Manager allows network managers to track users whoaccess their network. User identity is captured based onNetLogin authentication, LLDP discovery and Kerberossnooping. ExtremeXOS uses the information to then report onthe MAC, VLAN, computer hostname, and port location of theuser. Further, Identity Manager can create both roles andpolicies, and then bind them together to create role-basedprofiles based on organizational structure or other logicalgroupings, and apply them across multiple users to allowappropriate access to network resources. In addition, supportfor Wide Key ACLs further improves security by going beyondthe typical source/destination and MAC address as identificationcriteria access mechanism to provide filtering capabilities.Host IntegrityHost integrity checking keeps infected or non-compliantmachines off the network. Summit X450a series support a hostand endpoint integrity solution that is based on a modelpromoted by the Trusted Computing Group.Threat Detection and ResponseCLEAR-Flow Security Rules EngineCLEAR-Flow Security Rules Engine provides first order threatdetection and mitigation, and mirrors traffic to appliances forfurther analysis of suspicious traffic in the network.sFlowsFlow® is a sampling technology that provides the ability tosample application level traffic flows on all interfacessimultaneously.Port MirroringTo allow threat detection and prevention, Summit X450aswitches support many-to-one and one-to-many port mirroring. This allows the mirroring of traffic to an external networkappliance such as an intrusion detection device for trendanalysis or for utilization by a network administrator fordiagnostic purposes. Port mirroring can also be enabled acrossswitches in a stack.6

Extreme Networks Data Sheet: Summit X450a SeriesComprehensive Security ManagementLine-Rate ACLsACLs are one of the most powerful components used incontrolling network resource utilization as well as protectingthe network. The Summit X450a series supports up to 2,048centralized ACLs per 24-port block based on Layer 2, 3 or 4header information such as the MAC or IP source/destinationaddress. ACLs are used for filtering the traffic, as well asclassifying the traffic flow to control bandwidth, priority, mirroring, and policy-based routing/switching.Denial of Service ProtectionSummit X450a effectively handles DoS attacks. If the switchdetects an unusually large number of packets in the CPU inputqueue, it will assemble ACLs that automatically stop thesepackets from reaching the CPU. After a period of time, theseACLs are removed and reinstalled if the attack continues.ASIC-based LPM routing eliminates the need for control planesoftware to learn new flows, allowing more network resilienceagainst DoS attacks.Extreme Networks has developed tools that simplify and helpin efficiently managing your network. Ridgeline network andservice management provides fault, configuration, accounting, performance and security functions, allowing more effectivemanagement of Extreme Networks products, solutions andthird-party devices, in a converged network. For carrier networks, Ridgeline enables the shift from reactivecircuit monitoring to proactive service management. The keyfeatures integrated into the Service Advisor Feature Pack unifyservice fulfillment, service assurance and service engineering toenable carriers to more effectively manage next-generationresidential triple play, business Ethernet and Ethernet mobilebackhaul services.Secure and ComprehensiveNetwork ManagementAs the network becomes a foundation of the enterpriseapplication, network management becomes an importantpiece of solution. Summit X450a supports comprehensivenetwork management through Command Line Interface (CLI),SNMP v1, v2c, v3, and the embedded XML-based web userinterface, ExtremeXOS ScreenPlay. With a variety ofmanagement options and consistency across otherExtreme Networks modular and stackable switches,Summit X450a series switches provide ease-of-managementfor demanding converged applications.7
