Sharing Our Lightby Robert Daniels, FRCAS ROSICRUCIANS, WE STRIVE TO REACHinto the higher levels of the Cosmic and drawdown the light-filled love and inspirationthat is ever present, awaiting our recognition anduse. It comes not merely by desiring it, but froman intense awareness of the spirit within; not bymerely asking for it or by awaiting it in meditation,but by lifting up our intellect and emotions to alevel of attunement within, where the spiritualpower and light of the Cosmic can descend uponus through a process of attraction.This light and greater understanding comesin proportion to what we can use in the name ofservice and in helping others, or in our working orprivate lives. Energy, light and love flow from theCosmic to us only when we consciously become achannel for these forces. It follows also that we drawfrom the Cosmic only in relation to the strengthof our requests or demands, as it has often beensaid that if we ask little of ourselves, little will begiven.The Light WithinWe must cultivate an ever-growing andpersistent desire for greater light and for newopportunities to serve others. We must give ofourselves without thought of self but with caring,overflowing love, the agápe so sought after byancient Greek philosophers and scholars.There is no light to compare with the beautyof the light within when it shines radiantly fromone who reveals it. There is no mind so pure as onethat is filled with an ever present, living awarenessof God Within. No love can heal, care and blesslike the love that comes from a heart imbuedwith the presence of God. These are the rewardsof the mystical life that comes to those who havededicated themselves to the ideals of such a life.Paraphrasing the <strong>Rosicrucian</strong> teachings: “Wemust attune ourselves to the higher and better things inlife if we would have the <strong>Rosicrucian</strong> principles manifestand operate for us to the greatest extent. We must beginthe day by freeing our minds of all hatred, all anger,all jealousy, and all petty, destructive thoughts andunkindness of attitude. We must start the day with aninner expression of thankfulness for life itself and for theday’s opportunities to render service to humanity andobedience to God’s laws. Throughout the day we musttry to see in everything and everywhere the good thatis in the world and the good that is in people. We mustattune ourselves inwardly or in our emotions and generalattitude with the constructive, magnificent things of life.We must hold ourselves receptive to all of the higheremotions, not by sitting down and concentrating forhours at a time upon the incoming vibrations of somespecific nature, but by having an attitude of fraternallove, of universal peace, of faith in the laws of life,confidence in the integrity of mankind, and a surenessof the operation of the higher or divine laws.”Our work and principles are always close to ourhearts, and as we strive to fulfil our innermost desireto seek more light, so we also envisage sharing thatlight with others less fortunate than ourselves. We,who have devoted our thoughts and dedicatedourselves to a search for greater knowledge, sooneror later realise that our teachings are only forthe sincere seeker. we are capable of, and never be tempted to sharethese pearls of wisdom with those who would seekto diminish the Greater Light. This may seem likea paradox to some, for on the one hand, we seek toshare the light we have gleaned, and on the other,we must keep it from those who would profane it.This means that we should share it only with thosewho can make themselves worthy to receive theGreater Light that that the Order has to offer, bythemselves seeking a true path of preparation andinitiation into the mysteries of life.The Path To IlluminationThe mystical path leading to illuminationrequires a tenacity of purpose and a dedication ofthe heart and mind that only a few possess. It istherefore not a path of the curious or the sensationseeker, or even for those seeking a refuge from thetroubled world. It is an ideal for those who arewilling to vow their whole heart and mind for thegrowth and expression of the soul within, to theend of truly serving and raising asuffering humanity.The knowledge and experiencewe have acquired helps us to trulyunderstand and sympatheticallyattune ourselves with the needs ofothers, and by our example we mayshow them the way to self-realisation.We can make many mistakes byoffering to others the knowledgewe have acquired by trial and errorthrough the experiences of life.And of course it is natural to hopethat others will avoid the pitfallswe did not escape. But we need torealise that others must discovertheir own path through experienceand be allowed the opportunity tolearn by themselves, and to relyon themselves, just as we did. There mustbe no delay, no hesitation and full dedication toserving others when help of a serious and nonsuperficialnature is asked for. This is serving theLight.Life is the great teacher. But we can hasten thislearning process when we reflect within upon thevalue of our day-to-day experiences. In periodsof silent meditation we can be instructed by theever-lasting Soul that knows all and sees all. We sooften ignore the silent wisdom that God has placedwithin our own hearts, and too frequently turn tothe ever-continuing clamour of the world aroundus for solutions to our problems. But where hasthat left us?For centuries, men and women have beenimmersed in a material life, yet they have not foundtrue and fully satisfying answers to the questionsperplexing them. But the truth of life has beenwritten and spoken of by the world’s mystics andgreat minds throughout the ages. There are very fewmysteries that have not already been discovered bysages, adepts, avatars and even humble neophytesof the past. Now it is our turn to discover these selfsame mysteries along our paths ofdevelopment under the auspices ofthe Rosy Cross.Sadly, the majority of people inthe world have not yet found a truepath of inner evolvement to follow.Their yearning and unhappiness ismanifestly clear for all to see, andin their ignorance they follow falseprophets of political and religiousmovements that lead to nothing butunhappiness and death. The hatredthat exists in some of these groups isof an intensity hard for even a truemystic to comprehend. But it exists,and will only ever be defeated bythose for whom the inner Light ofholiness is an ever present reality.Those with inner vision andinner hearing know that life’s greatestvalues lie within themselves, andthat in the stillness of their innermost being liesthe inner communion with Universal Truth thatwe all seek and will all eventually discover. Suchlight as we ourselves have sought can come onlywhen selfishness, vanity, pride and self-seekinghave been replaced with love, trust, sincerity andcompassion for others, the agápe of ancient Greece.Then we will know, as do our initiated brothersand sisters, the glory and beauty of a mystical lifelived to the full.3

Idiodi, FRC<strong>Rosicrucian</strong>ismand Social Stability(Excerpts from a Keynote address presented at a recent Conclave)IF THERE IS ANY ONE FACTOR THAThumankind had yearned for throughout theages, it is happiness. Happiness itself is anintangible phenomenon; it is both a feeling and astate of being which tends to hold at equilibriumthat which man possesses of inward and outwardthings. In other words, in a happy state man feelscontented and satisfied in addition to wishing tolive forever in such an exhilarating state; since byassumption if everyone is happy, the society maybe seen as stable.At one point or the other in all lands, ithas been thought that the more material wealth orcomfort is acquired, the greater man’s happinesswas likely to become. Consequently, great effortshave been deployed to generate economic wealthor comfort in many nations of the world in orderto establish stable societies.However, casual observation revealsthat economic wealth or comfort has not alwaysbrought with it the happiness desired by men.Indeed, in a number of cases, men have actuallywondered whether it was not better to spend lesstime working for economic affluence and comfort.This is because it has been observed that thewealthier many societies have become, the moreevil they have become. In other words, destructiveand dastardly acts such as cheating, robbery andmindless termination of human lives have beenobserved to grow in number and sophisticationwith economic advancement in most societies.Aside from wealth, a number of othertheories have been advanced to explain whatmen have come to describe as uncheckable socialviolence and immorality; these include theories ofcriminology, satiation, rebellion, religion, socialpolicies and marriage. I will endeavour to brieflytake on these theories one by one.CriminologySome criminologists hold that the shape of anindividual’s head may induce him or her to criminalacts! This submission is premised on researchescarried out early in the last century by criminologistsassisted by medical persons mostly living inEuropean and American countries. of human beings’ physical features were equallystudied and linked to some criminal tendenciesbut the studies on the human head attracted thegreatest attention; thus, various instruments weredeveloped to measure the shapes of human headsand these measurements were in turn related tothe shapes of internal parts of individuals’ brainsand available behaviour records on the individualsstudied (a process known as physiognomy).Conclusions were then drawn based onthe theories developed before then. Although animprovement on early work in this domain has beenregistered with a suggestion that physical structurescannot be wholly relied upon, criminologists stillbelieve that they can lead us to identify potentialcriminals based on physical features.SatiationSatiation is a concept made popular by psychologists;it implies a state of “over-satisfaction” or “oversupply”mainly concerning material thingsalthough it is possible to experiencesatiation in the area of things that arenon-material.Psychologists mainly studied theeffect on human behaviour of materialsatiation. The conclusion in this area of research isthat a human being who is over supplied in materialthings eventually gets bored and even irritated bythe excessive supply of these material things. Thisreaction is however just one aspect of the effecton human behaviour of the phenomenon referredto as “satiation.” The other aspect of the effect ofsatiation on human behaviour is that the satiatedindividual normally seeks new experiences, newadventures and new actions usually from his or herimmediate environment as a means of escaping orrelieving the state of satiation.Youths that find themselves in this state,tend to seek for unusual experiences outside ofthe home. They are by nature exuberant, andbeing largely inexperienced in matters of properliving, these youths simply go for acts that arecondemnable and criminal.RebellionSocieties are neither unipolar nor homogenous; ineach society can be found various interest groupsdoing everything to protect their own interests andmembers.It is true that all interest groups cannot rulea given society at any one moment; therefore only“Rebellion arises when one or a group of peopleconcludes that their interests are being, or havebeen, endangered or made marginal.”The <strong>Rosicrucian</strong> <strong>Heritage</strong> -- No: 2, <strong>2007</strong>one or a few interest groups may find themselvesin power at a given point in time. Unfortunately,where the interests of some groups not in powerare seen to be neglected or ignored, rebellion maytake place.Rebellion is an active rejection of a socialpolicy or directive; rebellion arises when one or agroup of people concludes that their interests arebeing, or have been, endangered or made marginal.Rebellion may be expressed openly or covertly.When it is expressed openly it is recognised forwhat it is and eventually resolved. However, whenit is expressed in a concealed manner, it takesvarious forms including covert criminal expressionsthat are socially destabilising.ReligionMany a crime and social ill have been blamed onlack of religiousness in the society. In other words,it has been stated that because many members ofsociety do not accept and imbibe the good virtuesadministered by God and as presented throughreligious institutions, the opposites are embracedby many. These opposites, called vices, eventuallyturn out to be destructive, destabilising anddamaging to society.On the other hand, it has equally beennoticed in some instances that religious institutionsthat ought to show the way have fallen short ofleading their followers to the “Promised Land.”Since members of any religious organisationwould be prepared more to be led by the practicalexamples given by the lifestyle of their leaders,each time these leaders default publicly on socialmorality, the collective psyche of its members isaffected; and there is a corresponding tendency tofollow suit by the folk, unleashing on society, eithersecretly or openly, some unpalatable or downrightcriminal social acts that are destabilising.Social PoliciesThe enactment of some social policies has equallybeen found to promote social tension and crimes.Any social policy, for instance, whose effect isgradual disfranchisement of a segment or largesegment of society is a typical example of socialpolicy as the source of social tension. Additionally,5


it will be found that any social policy that graduallymakes the masses poorer is the root cause of socialcrisis and instability.Marriage InstitutionsThere is a consensus that a society within whichthe marriage institution has failed cannot be well.This is because the marriage institution has beennaturally established as the most reliable schoolwhere the good tone and ethics of any given societyare developed, taught and lived.It is when members of a given society arecapable of maintaining human families throughmarriage that children may be brought up in sociallyagreed and desirable ways. This process eventuallytranslates into a harmonious society within whichit will be possible to take proactive steps with theview to handling disagreements before they get outof hand and precipitate instability.SolutionsThese concepts have been issues within humansocieties for centuries. Efforts have been made bydifferent groups in all manner of societies to findsolutions to these very issues. They have indeedbecome intractable problems for many of them.For example, philosophers of all generations havetried to proffer their own solutions; psychologistshave prescribed their remedies while sociologistshave made their own suggestions. Religious leadershave offered solutions and even political scientistshave made useful inputs as regards politicalarrangements that would reduce social tensionand promote social stability through proper ethicalbehaviour.In Nigeria we are witnesses in recent timesto some years of proactive and head long actionsagainst what the current democratic dispensationviews as sources of unethical behaviour. Yet, ethicalissues, social unrest and difficulties still abide withus here in Nigeria (and indeed with most societies ofthe world) where large scale fraud, hideous crime,terrorism and near total absence of brotherly loveare frequently reported. As these types of report arereceived from developing countries, so too are theyreceived from those seemingly developed nationsof the world.The global situation on this matter seemsto be reaching a breaking point or a point ofhopelessness and resignation as all prescriptionshave so far failed to significantly reduce thosehuman acts which men would have preferred notThe marriage institution has been naturally established as themost reliable school where the good tone and ethics of any givensociety are developed, taught and lived.to experience and which are here referred to asunethical behaviour.Yet, human beings need not despair inthis matter. Sacred history recounts the stories ofthose that have had the privilege of living on thissame earth plane without suffering this much. Inother words, human beings like us (in the sensethat these human beings have one head, four limbsand other organs), have lived here on earth withoutexperiencing the kind of violence, hatred, wars andcalamities which we of the present generation areexperiencing. These human beings we talk abouthere did not live in a world where natural processesare suspended or kept out; they lived within anenvironment where there were landslides, violentstorms and volcanic eruptions. Existing within theirworld were also many instances of social tension.However, the difference between themand us, or that between their generation and oursis that those natural processes and social tensionsdid not bring them the type of untold hardship thatthey bring us now. The other difference betweenthe two generations is that the ethical values of thepeople we talk about were in contrast to those thatwe hold.What Is Ethics?Ethics is generally seen as being synonymous withmorality; morality is a set of principles usuallyevolved to guide the actions and conduct of humanbeings through constructive and exalting channels;this is why ethics is viewed in philosophy as: “The6The <strong>Rosicrucian</strong> <strong>Heritage</strong> -- No: 2, <strong>2007</strong>


study and evaluation of human conduct in the light ofmoral principles.”Since human beings began giving seriousthought to ethics and ethical motive, manytheories of ethics have been developed; forexample, intuitionists, moral-sense theoristsand sentimentalists such as Ralph Cudworth,Francis Hutcheson and J.J. Rousseau submit thatthere exists an inner phenomenon in all humanbeings which suggests to them that which isethical or morally right. On the other hand, thosephilosophical empiricists such as John Locke andJohn Stuart Mill, while agreeing to the existenceof a phenomenon called “conscience” submit thatthis conscience is not responsible for determiningthat which is ethical. It is but only an instrumentwhich evolves within the developmentwhen he (the individual) is engagedin the process of learning those actsand conducts that are accepted andsanctioned by society as being ethicallyright. Yet another school exists which views ethicsas a corpus of religious prescriptions that mustguide human conduct.In practical terms therefore, ethics standsfor moral rules guiding man’s conduct while moralvalue implies the importance and significanceattached to a set of moral values or to moralprecepts in general.<strong>Rosicrucian</strong>ism And EthicsThose people I referred to earlier in this discoursewho were able to live through life without sufferingas much as we do today (under the weightof immorality and unethical behaviour) were<strong>Rosicrucian</strong>s.These ancient <strong>Rosicrucian</strong>s found out earlyin life that there exists within all human beings aphenomenon whose basic mission is to guide manaright at all times if it were listened to. Althoughthis phenomenon, which I also refer to here asintangible, exists within all human beings andalthough this body is ever ready to serve man as areliable guide and guardian, it is not designed toimpose its will on man’s will. It will therefore gentlyguide and allow man to follow or not to follow.One other discovery made by theseancient <strong>Rosicrucian</strong>s is that there exists a course ofinstruction and practice which enables the reliableand infallible inner guide to do its work withoutinterference from one’s own will. That course ofinstruction was imparted through initiatic processes“There exists within all human beings a phenomenonwhose basic mission is to guide man aright at alltimes if it were listened to.”The <strong>Rosicrucian</strong> <strong>Heritage</strong> -- No: 2, <strong>2007</strong>in the Great Pyramid of learning and symbolicallyreferred to as the most sacred of human virtues.It was taught by those ancient <strong>Rosicrucian</strong>s thata person spending time and energy on a daily,weekly and monthly basis to imbibe these humanvirtues becomes linked to the source of all moralitywithin him or her. A society that will be lucky toharbour a large number of individuals that mayhave undergone this course of instruction will behappy indeed, as it will be the most ethical societyon earth.This discourse cannot be meaningfullyconcluded without calling attention to the political,economic and social instability into which nationsplunge themselves when leaders and the led alikedesecrate the virtues we cherish as constitutingthe Pyramid of Ideals of <strong>Rosicrucian</strong>ism; decline,culminating in social decay, results. I describe thisas the decline before the rise. On the other hand,wherever there is a renewed commitment to thesevalues in the right order of priorities, we begin towitness a rise after the decline.All those who are 50 years old and abovemust have noticed, as I have, various areas inwhich we have experienced economic woes, ethicaldecline and social decay, nationally and globallyin many aspects of our human interaction andendeavours. For the purpose of this weekend’sactivities in which the focus is on <strong>Rosicrucian</strong>ismand social stability, please permit me to sharewith you my reflections on just three of them: theNigerian experience.• The first area of concern is pharmacy. In the1950s, 60s and up till the 70s we did nothave many tablets, capsules or sophisticateddrugs for the sick to swallow. Headache,fever, colds, stomach upsets etc respondedto the few medications available – APC,codeine, antepar and later aspirin did alot of wonders. Drugs available then wereauthentic, genuine and reliable. Those whowere educated persuaded all fellow citizenswho were still using native medicine tochange over to “Oyibo medicine” wheneverthey were sick. There was enormous successresulting from this campaign until we7


deteriorated into the era of adulteratedmedicine and fake drugs. Now in this eraof National Agency for Food and DrugAdministration Control (NAFDAC) there ishope of a rise after the decline.• The second area of concern is banking. In the1950s, 60s and up until the 70s, we did nothave many Banks and financial institutions.Our currency in pounds, shillings and pence;and even when it became the Naira, wasrelatively stable. Those who were educatedpersuaded all fellow citizens who were stillin the habit of keeping their hard-earnedmoney in Ovaltine or Bournvita tins to learnto patronise banks and banking by savingtheir money and earning interest. Everythingappeared to be okay until we started hearingof distress in the banking sector leading tofailed banks and an era of colossal loss ofhard-earned, life long savings! Now in thisera of merging and consolidation, there ishope for a rise after the decline.• The third area of concern is publictransportation. Fifty years ago, our roadswere few but well maintained by the thenPublic Works Department (PWD). Ourtrains and rail system as maintained by theNigerian Railway Corporation conveyedgoods, school children and workers over thevast geographical expanse of our country.We had only one Airline: a national carrierwhich served us domestically. We convincedfellow citizens that the aircraft was themost secure, most comfortable and safestform of transportation. Gradually, peopleresponded positively and governmentworkers, businessmen, politicians andcaptains of industry started travelling byair with little or no fear. Those who opposedflying because they considered it a challengeto God, who dwells above, then startedflying even more than the birds that livein the skies. Ultimately decline manifestedwith ill-maintained airports and agedaircraft resulting in increasing numbers ofaccidents and air disasters. Now in this era ofemergency reforms in the Aviation industryin Nigeria and worldwide, there is hope fora rise after the decline.Out of the many facets of our national and globalenvironment in which we have noticed heartrendingdeterioration, I have highlighted thesethree which are so glaring in order to emphasisethe need for proper ethical orientation based on<strong>Rosicrucian</strong> principles which are generally ofuniversal applicability. If we can inculcate in theconsciousness of fellow citizens of our planet theneed to develop the right sense of values, the rightorder of priorities and the right attitude to work,politics, business, religion, to fellow human beingsand to life generally, then this conclave wouldhave accomplished its purpose by contributing itsquota towards the campaign against corruptionand related social vices in order to establish socialstability.Love is Who God IsLove is who God is and who you are as well.The seed of everything you need is already within you.If you would receive a miracle,be still and receive the manifestation of Love.The fact is, you take most miracles for granted.Life is full of them and never without them.Love is the source of all miracles,It invokes their presence.--from The Book of Miracles: the healing work of João de Dens8The <strong>Rosicrucian</strong> <strong>Heritage</strong> -- No: 2, <strong>2007</strong>


Life’sIdealby Raynor Millen, FRCTHE WORLD WE LIVE IN IS ONE OFincreasing complexity. Whereas in pasttimes our struggles were for basic survival,for existence in the tumult of battles and politicalupheavals that punctuate human history, thegreatest challenge of the new millennium issurely to find our true selves. Keeping our eyeson the guiding light of life’s true purpose in theface of stifling materialism, has got to be the mostimportant thing we can do for the foreseeablefuture.To know one’s purpose in life and as importantly,to know how to carry out that purpose, is to be inpossession of knowledge beyond value. So manyof our fellow travellers along life’s trails see theirexistence as an accident, something that happenedby chance and will no doubt end by chance too. Forthem, life is spent with little or no deeper thoughtat all, and for a surprisingly large proportionof humanity, gratification of desires rather thanneeds is the only law. Others, prompted by theuntranslated urgings of the imprisoned self within,search restlessly in many directions, falling prey tothe many distractions of our modern way of life.Those who have spent many years in the pursuitof possessions and social position often reach anend to their materialistic goals only to find theirlives devoid of happiness and filled to the brim withcynicism and meaninglessness. Which directioncan they go to assuage that inner gnawing? Andgnawing it certainly is, for no matter what they seemto do, they cannot seem to escape a profound senseof emptiness. Unfortunately, because of attitudesgained through the search for possessions, suchpeople often seek quick, easy ways into drugs andalcoholism, and social problems are rife amongstsuch unfortunate souls. If only they would realisethat this lifetime may be only the first of manyconscious steps in their search, a quest unlimitedby time and space, they would soon settle downto real work upon themselves. Sadly though, fewcome to such a realisation, and spend the rest oftheir days in abject misery, despite their outwardsigns of wealth and success.In realising the pitfalls before us and followingan inner plan for living, we have an invaluableguide. Yet, in no way are we immune from thedemands and challenges of life. Daily attunement, or seeking within, is vital to helpus keep our balance, so our mystic quest may be aconstant, continuing one, functioning fully everybreathing moment.There is no weakness in serenity, and indeed, noneed for forceful displays in the lives of those whohave achieved such a balance of their physicaland psychic selves. Their strength is a quiet river,running deep and ready for use in times of need.Strength often lies precisely in the act of not using itwhen it could be used to gain selfish advantage.Cosmic EducationAs we see the pattern of our lives emerging, werealise what goals we have set ourselves. Whenwe measure the distance between our presentself-expression and our aspirations, we may beoverwhelmed. That is not to say thatthere are separate entities within us, but instead,three distinct aspects of consciousness. Each selfpossesses unique characteristics and is relatedto the other selves. The harmony or disharmonybetween these selves is responsible for all humanhappiness or unhappiness. We are consequentlyendowed with a responsibility to learn the natureof these aspects of consciousness or selves, theirinteractions, and to develop skill in creatingharmony among them. Thus, it is squarely in ourlap to promote unity within our consciousness.The mystical healers of Hawaii, the Kahunas,gave each aspect of consciousness a name. Theycalled them Unihipili, or Low Self, comparable to thesubconscious; Uhane, or Middle Self, comparableto the objective consciousness; and the Aumakua,or High Self, which is the Cosmic Self or Godwithin.Each self possesses a unique physical dwellingplace within the material reality. The Unihipilidwells within the region of the diaphragm, but hasa presence throughout the entire body. The Uhanedwells within the region of the head or brain,while the Aumakua dwells above the head and isconnected to the body, specifically the Unihipili, bya chord of aka or spiritual substance.The UnihipiliThe Unihipili is the subconscious aspect ofconsciousness. involuntary processes of the body and generatingenergy for all physical functions. The Kahunaslikened this Unihipili to a powerful animal, part ofprimal nature, and in need of training, disciplineand guidance. However, it is imperative to be awarethat in fact it cannot be controlled; it resists controland responds instead to emotionally charged gentleguidance. This Unihipiliis the seat of the emotions,habit and memories, bothpersonal and impersonal,from past and presentincarnations. It is the centreof psychic happenings andcan reach out to other beingsvia the chords of aka, orspiritual substance, createdwhen interacting with otherbeings. It possesses a directline of communication withthe Aumakua or Cosmic thatthe Uhane does not possess.In fact, it is through theUnihipili that we reach out to God in prayer andreceive a response. It is within the realm of dreams,where symbols are the language of choice, that boththe Unihipili and the Aumakua communicate withthe Uhane or waking consciousness.The Unihipili uses deductive reasoning;taking a premise assimilated within its being andmethodically manifesting the consequences ofthat premise in the greatest detail via the powerof the Aumakua, the constant beliefs we feedthis subconscious, through the objective self, areperpetually being presented to the cosmic selffor manifestation in daily life. Consciousness ishighly creative. Thus, it is critically important tobe aware that our perceived realities that havebecome solidified as beliefs will manifest in someaspect. This Unihipili is constantly amenable tosuggestion, though in varying degrees dependingon our emotional and physical circumstances, andmust be fed healthy and constructive perceptions.This is the function of the Uhane.The UhaneThe Uhane is the objective aspect of consciousnessand can best be described as the exoteric self, sinceits primary domain is the material reality. It isconscious of the five physical senses, uses language,pictures, and is the seat of reason. Thus, the Uhanetends to create beliefs regarding its experience ofreality. It passes this information on to the Unihipilithrough emotionalised thought, both habitualand fleeting. However, habitual emotionalisedthought creates the most powerful and lastingimpressions within theUnihilipi, which are in turnpresented to the Aumakuafor manifestation.Since the Uhane usesinductive reasoning, itcan create a premise notin keeping with materialreality. It can completelymisinterpret reality, whichcan be quite problematic.The Uhane possesses animmense will power that theancient Hawaiians advisedmust be used to wisely guidethe Unihipili, feeding it withconstructive premises and positive emotions inorder to bring forth a harmonious reality, theexperience of miracles and the overcoming ofchallenges. Lastly, it is important to note that theUhane can direct its awareness both outwardly, suchas when it is involved in some physical activity, orinwardly, when contemplating a particular subjector during meditation.The AumakuaThe Aumakua or cosmic self is the creator of reality.The Kahunas called this self “the god” but didnot see it as the Supreme Creator. Instead, it wasbelieved to be an ancestor or highly evolved spiritpossessing both male and female qualities sentto aid and guide an individual towards greaterevolution and happiness. This “god” is able toaccomplish anything, being an utterly trustworthyand faithful spirit, vehemently dedicated to theindividual’s well-being. To accomplish a goal, thiscosmic self may see fit to contact the cosmic selvesof other persons, and other more evolved beings,going so far as to contact the Supreme Creator.Again, after accepting a premise from the Uhane,the Unihipili passes that belief on to the Aumakuafor manifestation. The Aumakua continuallyaccepts the emotionally charged premises givento the Unihipili and uses that information to createour individual reality. Thus, every thought, word


and deed is a powerful prayer that manifests afterits kind; as we sow, so shall we reap. Thus, it is ofutmost importance to feed the Unihipili qualityemotions and beliefs that are positive, constructiveand faith-filled in nature.Bear in mind that all three selves are in constantcommunication with one another, twenty-fourhours a day, seven days a week. Also, be awarethat only the Unihipili can contact the Aumakuadirectly. Uhane contacts the Aumakua by wayof the Unihilipi. When emotionalised-thoughtis experienced by the Uhane, this thought isimpressed upon the Unihilipi, which in turn ispresented to the Aumakua for manifestation. Thestronger and more persistent the thought, the moreclearly it will manifest.The Ha Prayer RiteAs <strong>Rosicrucian</strong>s, it is our constant desireand challenge to improve the quality of ourconsciousness, and thereby hew out a moredesirable reality for our experience and for thebenefit of others. The Kahunas of Hawaii pursuedthe same end and used prayer as the main vehicleof achievement. Modern students of Huna, as thestudy of this knowledge is called today, have namedthis formula of prayer the Ha Prayer Rite.The Kahunas believed that before a prayercan manifest and reality reconstructed, the pathof realisation must be cleared. They believed thatguilt, whether actual or imagined, would block theconnection betweent h e U n i h i l i p ia n d A u m a k u a ,neutralising ourconsciously directedand emotionalised prayer. All habitual negativeemotions have the same tendency and must bereplaced with positive emotions. Thus, you mustforgive yourself for wrongs committed and makeamends, whether physical or spiritual. For theancient Hawaiians, the only sin was to deliberatelyseek to harm another. Also, we must talk to ourUnihilipi or subconscious and convince ourselvesof the worthiness of our desire. This would includetaking into consideration individual moral beliefsregarding the consequences of our fulfilled desire.It is like preparing soil for a garden. Once the soilis turned, filled with fertile matter, and freed ofstones, the seeds can be planted. It is important to note that somestudents have a difficult time “seeing” something intheir mind’s eye, with detail and life. Consequently,it must be remembered that visualisation includesword pictures or what I call “word visualisation.” Ihave experienced amazing results through verballydescribing my desire in all its detail, while keeping“All three selves, according to the ancientHawaians, are in constant communicationwith one another.”emotionally chargedas to its eventualmanifestation.O n c e w evisualise our desire,in whatever way is best for us, we must back it upwith emotion. The Kahunas saw this act in itselfas transference of one’s desire to the Unihipilifor eventual presentation to the Aumakua formanifestation. Without emotion, the desire is deadand your seeds will not germinate. All persistentemotionally charged thoughts manifest themselvesin some aspect. So one can see the importance oftruly desiring what one is asking for. It is oftenthe case that we ask for something that we do notsincerely want, but feel we should want. Thus, ourdesire is tepid and will reap little or no result. Wemust truly desire what we present and with greatemotion. While presenting prayer, the Kahunaswould engage in directed deep breathing to stillthe mind and charge the Unihipili with mana or life13


force energy. This was an importantway to raise energy levels of thebody so that great emotion couldbe conjured.The best time for presentingthis emotionally charged desire tothe Unihipili is during a time ofbalance. During the waking state theUhane, or objective self, dominates,while during our sleeping statethe Unihipili, or subconscious self,dominates. Thus, hypnagogic (sleepinducing) and hypnopaedic (sleeplearning) states are ideal for suchcontact. Excellent times also includemeditation and during simple orelaborate ritual, in which the bodyand mind are relaxed, yet alert. Ifthe Unihipili is too much to the forewe will lack the vitality to makethe presentation, and if the Uhaneis too much to the fore we will betoo awake and stimulated for thepresentation to get through. Thus, an ideal state ofrelaxation and alertness must be cultivated. One canoften experience this after a hot bath or shower, alarge meal or following intense physical activity.Three distinct selves were believed toexist within each individual.from guilt and doubt. Third, presentthe desire in a relaxed state ofbalance between the objectiveand subconscious selves, with anemotional charge and enthusiasm.Fourth, you must drop the desirefrom your mind until you makethe presentation to the Unihipiliagain. The presentation can bemade repeatedly until you feel theimpression has been adequatelyaccepted by your subconscious.You see this expressed in devotionsand consecutive day rituals. The rewards ofotherworldliness are dubious and besides, it’slonely up there.Whatever you may think of this physicalworld, it still remains the arena in which you mustperform. The basic instinctual drives propel andnecessity presides as ruthlessly as any Nero. Acloud dweller is inevitably precipitated into theearthly melee and, unless his stance is firm, hisdefeat is certain. At best, he will be badly bruised.Cloud fabric is tenuous; as disappointing ascandy-floss melting immediately in the mouth,however iridescent and captivating it mightlook. The Ideal wears a material garb; its essencepermeates the Here and Now. And knowinglyor unknowingly, all have embarked on the samejourney. The “Holy Grail” is an earthen vessel, itscontents potent with juices fermented from life’sexperiences. The tools of spiritual growth are athand and their use is compulsory.They are earthy tools and seemingly unequallydistributed. But if a spade can turn only a littlesoil, the divinity that sparks each grain is the samethat fills a steam shovel’s load. To ignore the toolfitted to one’s hand is foolish, for practiced skill isa prerequisite for mastering another more complexone. This is not to say that the human spirit isearth bound; that it can’t soar and enrich itself bytemporary respite from physical preoccupations.But mystic ecstasy is as futile as dervish frenzyunless it is converted into practical utility.Countless words have been written to expressthe inexpressible. They are nebulous, distractingand even dangerous if they induce detachment andencourage idleness. Crystal bowls are neitherbetter nor worse than metal ones, but they arecertainly different.Playing the Singing BowlSinging bowls are played by striking the bowlin certain places with a soft mallet to produce awarm bell tone. Genuine antique singing bowlsproduce a complex chord of harmonic overtones.Singing bowls may also be played by the friction ofrubbing a wooden, plastic or leather wrapped malletor wand around the rim of the bowl to produceovertones and a continuous “singing” sound. Hereis the method:• Place the Singing Bowl in the palm of the lefthand if you are right-handed. Smaller bowlsshould be held by the fingertips.• With your right hand grasp the wand aboutmid-length, much as you would hold a penbut pointing downwards and touching thewood. If you are using a padded wand thered wool should be on top.• With an even pressure, rub the wandclockwise around the rim of the bowl.• Experiment with speed. Let the soundbuild up slowly as the bowl picks up thevibration.A special sound effect can be produced by addinga small amount of water to the bottom of thebowl. The sound produced using this technique isstrangely similar to dolphins singing. The amountof water used varies of course with the individualbowl.Start by filling three quarters of the bowl withwater. Be careful not to get the rim of the bowl wet.Now, play the bowl using the wand-around-the rimUsing a bowl in sound therapy.technique. Bring up the sound by using a steady,even pressure. Pull the wand away from the bowlrim and let the bowl continue to vibrate while stillholding the bowl in your hand, tilt it so that thewater inside gently laps towards the inside rim.Continue to swirl gently while tilting the bowland water. Experiment with the amount of waterused. Usually the best effect is produced with aminimum amount of water.Another way of modifying the sound is by theuse of the mouth. Start the bowl singing by usingthe wand-around-the rim technique. Pull the wandaway from your bowl and let the bowl continueto sing. While still holding the bowl in your hand,raise it up to your mouth. The sound may then bemodulated by changing the size and shape of theoral cavity. Experiment with the relative positionof your mouth to the outside rim.Healing SoundThe sound vibrations emanating from the bowlstimulate the body to recreate its own harmonyand help produce alpha waves, which are presentin the brain during deep relaxation. Many peoplefeel they have been touched and cleansed withinwhen they listen to the sound of a singing bowl.As some describe it: “Time stands still. Thereis a feeling of peace, sometimes relief in achingparts of the body, or at the very least, contact withsomething beyond daily life.”Many people find the rich blend of harmonicovertones, which the bowls produce, have a directeffect upon their psychic centres. Playing the bowlscan have an immediate centring affect on the body.The tones set up a response that creates a balancebetween the right and left sides of the brain, abalance known as synchronisation. Part 6IN THE PREVIOUS ARTICLE, WE STATEDthat the level of consciousness is a functionof complexity. We argued that everythinghas a consciousness from the smallest particleto very complex systems like human beings. Assystems increase in complexity, they can developan awareness of their own existence, which wecommonly call “self consciousness.”This begs the question: how does this awarenessarise? What separates human beings at present fromsay vast computer networks? Is it just that computers18by William Hand, FRCIn Part 5 of this series we started to look at the topic of consciousness. In Part 6 we will continue thisstudy. However, it is at this stage that we start to enter very controversial areas for science. Much ofthe science we will consider from now on is deeply theoretical, even though the theories originate fromsome of the greatest scientific minds alive today. Also the subject matter is approaching the frontiersof current intellectual mystical thought. However, hopefully it will resonate with the personal deepmystical experiences that we all have the privilege of encountering in life. That is certainly a possibilitythat would be foolish not to acknowledge. It isalso the sincere belief of many scientists workingin the field of artificial intelligence that one day,machines will take on characteristics that willmake them indistinguishable from humans interms of reasoning power. But will they possessself consciousness?Science is divided on this issue and some nowargue that complex computers will only, at best,


mimic the human brain and that self consciousnessstems from the more holistic concept of mind ofwhich the brain is just a part. Given the currentexponential rise in computer power I expect thisissue to be resolved once and for all in our children’slifetime.Consciousness and Vital Life ForceHowever, to return to the question of the differencebetween human beings and powerful computers,it is commonly accepted that human beings are“alive” and that computers are not. So what isaliveness? Is an atom alive? Are we alive? We knowthe latter is true, and from the arguments presentedin Part 5 we can say that the former is also truesince we have equated aliveness with complexityby comparing the concepts of passive and activeconsciousness.But there are obviously degrees of aliveness; anatom does not have the same awareness as you or I.So is there a cut-off point when a complex systembecomes self-aware? This seems very unlikely asnature does not work thatway. So if we reject thatline of reasoning for thetime being then there hasto be something else that iscommon to both the atom and ourselves.Well there are a few possibilities, but if we use areductionist argument then ultimately we (the atomand ourselves) are both essentially combinationsof vibrating strings (see Part 3). Where there isvibration there is an energy, and where there isan energy there is a force and that same force is inboth the atom and ourselves. The difference is thatin human beings the force is stronger. Moreover,the force operates throughout our bodies, not justin the brain, and it is the strength of this force thatultimately separates us from computers. Mysticshave given a name to this force: Vital Life Force orVLF for short.The Duality of VLFWe have just defined VLF as the force that causesstrings to vibrate. It is also the force that keeps ourbodies together through the principles of polarityand the workings of the forces of matter such asthe electro-magnetic force. It can be argued thatthe electro-magnetic, the strong nuclear and weaknuclear forces discovered by science are materialmanifestations of the VLF. If we also includegravity then the VLF may hold the key to the“Consciousness is a force, theprimary force behind all reality.”The <strong>Rosicrucian</strong> <strong>Heritage</strong> -- No: 2, <strong>2007</strong>grand unification or “the theory of everything” thatscience earnestly seeks. This is very controversialstuff for science, but fits in well with mysticalphilosophy, particularly the principle of duality inall that exists in nature.What I would like to propose is that VLF hasa duality of expression. The material expressionwill be the four fundamental forces discoveredby science; the immaterial or opposite polarity ofexpression will be their counterparts operating inthe hidden dimensions of String Theory.When we discussed String Theory in Part 3 itwas stated that for the theory to work there had tobe other dimensions of space-time in addition toour commonly experienced three dimensions ofspace and one of time. It is now becoming acceptedthat there are at least 11 dimensions of space-timein our universe, seven of them being “hidden.”Six of the hidden dimensions are thought to becurled-up extremely small (much smaller than asingle photon). However, these dimensions interactwith our normal space-time, and interactions orvibrations in the hiddendimensions manifest in thenormal ones, for the samestrings are vibrating in all11 dimensions. In fact thevibrations of the strings can be thought of as onesystem operating in at least 11 dimensions. The truenature of VLF has been a mystery for mystics overthe centuries. However, if we can accept the dualityproposed above then the veil begins to drop!So, we can now see that consciousness (and itslevels) is essentially a manifestation or attribute ofVLF; the stronger the VLF, the greater the potentiallevel of consciousness. Also, Consciousness (witha capital C) is a force, the primary force behind allreality. This primary and creative force is calledNous in the <strong>Rosicrucian</strong> teachings. The Soul force(arising from the strength of VLF and discussedin Part 7) is the immaterial aspect of Nous and thematerial aspect is referred to as Spirit.The Big PictureUntil 1995 String Theory was in a bit of a mess.Basically, there wasn’t just one theory but severalcompeting theories. All included the multidimensionalaspect, but each was subtly differentfrom the others. This was unsatisfactory, for ifString Theory is true, then the universe must stillhave only one way of operating. Then in 1995, thebrilliant scientist Ed Witten made a breakthrough19


y proving mathematically that if one of thehidden dimensions was very large (larger than theuniverse) then all the apparent differences betweenthe theories disappear, resulting in one, and onlyone, String Theory.We discussed the idea of dimensions in Part 3and introduced the concept that people living sayin just two dimensions cannot easily conceive of ahigher third dimension. Anything going on in thethird dimension would appear differently in twodimensions. For example, a sphere approachinga two-dimensional world would appear to thetwo-dimensional inhabitants as a flat circle that issimply increasing in diameter. So, by analogy wecan only glimpse a part of what may be happeningin the very large 11thdimension in our 10-dimensional universe.However, many scientistsare now exploring the idea that our universe is justpart of a higher dimension which can encompass aninfinite number of universes or branes (contractionof the word: membrane). For further reading onthis I recommend “The Universe in a Nutshell” byStephen Hawking listed in the bibliography.If we accept this picture, and I see no reasonnot to, then Consciousness as an attribute of VLFwill transcend all of the universes. Moreover, it willbe the same and the one and only Consciousness.This is much more than Cosmic or universalconsciousness. What we are possibly discussinghere is the consciousness of God. Many scientistsnow concede the possible existence of a higherforce responsible for all that exists, and we too havearrived at the point where we can go no furtherusing current scientific knowledge. It’s possible thatthere may be even higher dimensions, though fornow, let us leave that for personal meditation.Evolving Consciousnessand the Desire to BeTo summarise so far: we have seen that:• Consciousness (or awareness) arises from thevibrations of strings in multi-dimensions.• The force responsible for the string vibrationsis known as the Vital Life Force or VLF whichoperates in all dimensions.• The signal strength of the VLF determines thelevel of consciousness but…• VLF also transcends all dimensions to formone Consciousness.20“Consciousness as an attribute of VLFwill transcend all of the universes.”The <strong>Rosicrucian</strong> <strong>Heritage</strong> -- No: 2, <strong>2007</strong>Another way of looking at this is to considerConsciousness as a system comprising individualunits of consciousness (strength of VLF). Forexample, a plant could be one unit, a hydrogenatom another and you or I another (more complex)unit. The system as a whole would then havea consciousness dependent not only on theconsciousness of each unit but also upon the linksbetween each unit.This would be a quantum system wherebyaspects of Consciousness would come into realitythrough internal exchanges of information andenergy between each unit. Consciousness, since itencompasses all possible universes, would have thepotential for infinite expression. Indeed the quantumwave function Q (seePart 1) of Consciousnesswould actually be everypossible universe andeverything in every possible universe. “To Beingthere has never been a beginning.”Thus we can see that Consciousness has thepotential for infinite expression and as such iscontinually evolving to that goal in its “desireto be.” Is this the reason for life and why we arehere? The consonant forms the shape or frame of the word while the vowel breathes aliving energy – or to be precise, many different types of living energy – into the body of the word,giving it life in a spoken act of creation.WE FINISHED THE FIRST PART OFthe story with the knowledge thatvowels are further differentiated fromconsonants in that they consist of a very differentform of sound: the harmonic. They are thus moreakin to music than the [sound] pressure wavevalues of consonants. To go deeper with ourinvestigation we must follow the harmonic natureof the vowel, analysing exactly what a harmonic is,and then questioning why such mechanisms are sotightly woven into the human fabric.Figure 1- the first 16 tones of the harmonic series on CFigure 1 above illustrates the harmonic asrepresented in music. A harmonic is a series of notesor tones, generated automatically when a singlefoundation or fundamental tone (such as the note“C” in this instance) is sounded. not be detected by the human ear, but they are alwaysthere; and they bear a unique relationship to thefoundation note: they are exact multiples of the basefrequency of that parent note.Have you every wondered why each musicalinstrument sounds so different, despite the factthat it may be playing an identical piece of music?The answer lies with the harmonic tones which aregenerated by the body of the instrument, just as ourvowels are generated by the harmonic chambersin the throat, mouth and nasal passages. Withsome instruments the sound is very pure; think ofthe sound of the flute, for example. In these cases,most of the musical energy is concentrated in thefundamental note of the harmonic series. Withother instruments, such as the saxophone, theenergy is spread much more through the rangeof harmonic notes. You can easily close your eyesand differentiate between music being played on aflute and a saxophone. From the human harmonicperspective, your abilities are even more fabulous.You can, for example, detect the presence of anunseen loved one merely by hearing a sigh orcough. This gives us some idea of the power ofrecognition operating through the principles ofthe harmonic.To the scientific mind this might be the end ofthe story, but to the mystical view there are twofurther clues which will take us deeper: the first isthat modern music cannot accurately render thetrue harmonic values that form the building blocksof the vowel sounds, because music was altered inthe 17th century to allow for easier transpositionby orchestras; the second is that there are reallyonly a finite number of musical notes (an octaveconsists of only seven, with the first one repeated“an octave higher” to end the scale and thereafterbeginning the next). Each vowel harmonic patternactually consists of the same energies repeatedin different patterns and from different startingpoints (see Figure 2). What at first appears to bevery complex reduces itself to repeating patternsfound in pure harmonic music.How are we to approach this pure music? Wecan scarcely use modern science, for in its increasingdivision of everything it has totally lost sight of anyapproach that we might view as holistic. To assistus more fully to understand the significance of ourvowel energies we must go back much further intime to the era from which all modern science andlearning derived: the ancient Greeks, and the workof one of our own master mystics, Pythagoras.Figure 2Pythagoras spent his entire adult life developingand teaching the principles of cosmic harmony.Undoubtedly taught by the Egyptian mysteriesschools (he spent over twenty years in Egypt),he was the first to make public the principles ofgeometry and their cosmic significance. He wasalso the founder of modern musical theory, andcarried out the first published experiments intoharmonics. Pythagoras’ work began with the circle,the symbol of cosmic perfection and the form fromwhich all harmony derives. 24Pythagoras developing perfect harmonic musicfrom the proportions of the circle.circle, extended via geometric means into space.Using these as relative lengths for his strings, hecreated a lyre whose musical beauty was said tobe so profound that he kept the instrument withhim night and day, playing it whenever he couldto attune himself with the perfection of creation.Such an instrument would produce the pure musicwhich we are seeking, the music which our bodiesand minds use every day as we create and respondto the unseen harmonies that are the vowels inour speech. So let us follow this great mystic andexplore how the proportions of a circle can be madeto form the original Music Of The Spheres.As this is a very graphical process we willillustrate the steps using a series of diagrams. Ifyou have a compass and paper,you might like to follow the stepsand create your own harmonicproportions. You will find it a verymystical process.The first step is to draw acircle with a diameter of an inch.Next, move the compass to apoint on its right edge and drawanother circle as in Figure 3. Youwill notice they overlap and thisintersection is an ancient figurecalled the Vesica Piscis, meaningliterally, “Christ in the Age ofPisces.” As a small but importantaside, imagine you have rubbedout the edges of both circlesexcept the Vesica Piscis itself andFigure 3 - The Vesica Piscis, a geometricform that extends the circle in harmonicproportionsThe <strong>Rosicrucian</strong> <strong>Heritage</strong> -- No: 2, <strong>2007</strong>two little “tails” as Figure 3 indicates. You havecreated the “fish” symbol of the early Christians– a sure sign that we are treading a truly mysticalpath in our vowel adventure.The next stage is to draw a line through thecentres of the two circles as in Figure 4. Carry thisline on until you reach the very end of your paper.At the same time bisect the Vesica figure as shownwith a vertical line through the top and bottomcircle intersections. Now put the compass point onthe mid-point of the Vesica figure, where the twolines cross, and draw another circle, which exactlyencompasses both of the previous ones. When thisis done, begin the whole process again; you mayneed a large sheet of paper as the circles grow insize rapidly. What we are doing is forming lengths,the diameters of increasing circles, measured fromtheir common start point, each is derived from thereflection of the previous one, a familiar mysticalprinciple.If your paper is big enough, continue withthis method until you have produced the sevenlengths as shown in the lower part of Figure 5.Each length (apart from the first) is the diameterof a bigger circle, which encloses the previous two.These lengths can be made into music by makingthem into strings, chimes or pipes. The notes theyproduce are pure music i.e. music not corrected bythe orchestral conventions of the 17th century andonwards. This is the original Music Of The Spheres,a term created by Pythagoras, himself. The notesproduced by these lengths are in the sequenceB,E,A,D,G,C and F.The original talk I had planned shouldhave ended at this point, havingshown that the atomics of vowelcommunication were based onsimple harmonic values, but Irecognised this sequence; it’s theone that Dr Spencer Lewis uses todescribe the daily Periods in hisbook, Self Mastery and Fate withthe Cycles of Life. Moreover, as afurther factor in convincing usthat this is not just a coincidence,Dr Lewis specifically uses amusical metaphor when hintingat the forces underlying hissystem.For me, this was a momentof revelation: The walls of mysearch had fallen open, leaving

You will awakento it in a state of utter stillness, and you will realise that truth was alwaysthere within you and that reality was always there around you. – Britishphilosopher and mystic, Paul Brunton (1898-1981)by AmeliaHOW IS IT THAT SOME OF THE MOSTpenetrating, investigative minds in our presentday go so far as to respect and admire the virtueof believing in an all pervading God, but can’t findit in their hearts to accept some concept of a DivineBeing for themselves?An important lesson a pilot learns in histraining is the value of using oxygen when flyinghigher than 10,000 feet above sea level. I rememberwell flying over the Kalahari of Botswana at 11,000feet without oxygen one cloudless day and decidingI would climb to 13,000 in order to save a bit of fuel.I knew of the dangers of blackout from oxygendeprivation but like so many other neophytes ofaviation, I thought this would happen graduallyand that I would quickly be able to descend to alower altitude where I would again have enoughoxygen and hence “wake up.” After all, peopleregularly climbed to the top of Everest every yearand that was over 29,000 feet! A much lesser 13,000wasn’t going to hurt anyone, was it?I reached 13,500 feet and remained at this levelfor quite some time. Cessna engine was droning away as loudly as ever,everything seemed so serene, so beautiful. Thelast thing I can remember was noting how flat andfeatureless the ground was and how incrediblyhigh I was. Down there were wild animals and aparched desert. Up here…, I was so separated fromthe rest of the world, I may as well have been withthe angels…, and that’s nearly what happened.I don’t remember dozing off, but suddenly Iwas awoken withjolt. Nothing hadchanged, the planewas on autopilotbut I felt an intenseurgency to descend for I realised I had blackedout due to lack of oxygen. I knew I had to descendimmediately, with not a second to spare. No soonerhad I pulled back the throttle and just startedpushing the plane into a steep descent when I sawa large dark object heading straight towards me. Itwas all over in a few seconds as I watched a largevulture heading straight towards me. It was by the“grace of the gods” that it narrowly missed strikingthe plane, passing a mere 10 feet directly above myright wing.I could even see the vulture doing a contortedmove, wings pulled in tightly as it tried to avoidbeing struck. Panic set in and the plane wentinto a steep dive, levelling off at 9,000 feet whereeverything definitely felt a whole lot better. Thiswas the closest I have ever come to being killed, forhad the bird struck the plane, I and the wreckagewould probably never have been found. Had Iwoken from the blackout mere seconds after I did,I would never have made it out alive.I have often wondered what it was that woke meso forcefully and made me take immediately anddecisive action even before I saw the approachingdanger. I’ve never been one for believing in apersonalised God who sits like a genie waiting todo our bidding, but I must admit I have had a fewexperiences in my three score years on earth thathave now led me to the belief that I am not alone.“Something” walks with me day and night, right atmy side, indeed in my own shoes, and has saved mefrom several life-threatening situations, the planeincident being merely the most critical one.A fighter pilot in training becomes keenlyaware of the dangers of losing sufficient oxygen tofunction normally. The volunteer feels assure of himself as he did at ground level. Simplecalculations are done with a flourish and asked tocount backwards from 100, he does so with an easewhich, to him, seems smart and rapid.Only when he returns to normal at groundlevel and can view the video footage of his actionsat 20,000 feet without supplemental oxygen, doeshe realise how poorly he performed his tasks. Notonly was his attentionspan short, it waserratic, much likean inebriated ordrugged person.During his backward count, he missed numbersand even started counting forwards at times. Andwhen he examines the written examples of his ownsimple arithmetic calculations does he see the nowobvious errors. The lesson of such an impressivedemonstration becomes beyond dispute.Coming to GroundThe circumstances of life put many people inpressure chambers, at ground level, with the stressand strain having the effect of taking them high upinto the clouds, not knowing what they are doingand causing much harm as a consequence. Theymay not believe in God, but the desperate struggleto survive is capable of producing some form ofillumination to bring them down to earth.The clarity of inspired vision enables themto solve their problems and put an end to theirdistress. They believe that they have been rescuedby a higher power than themselves. The presencePanic set in and the plane went into a steep dive, levelling offat 9,000 feet where everything definitely felt a whole lot better.This was the closest I have ever come to being killed.27


Every one of us has the ability to reach a state of mind thatturns the fuzzy concept of God into the clear presence of a dearcompanion and a constant presence at our side.of God is no longer a question of faith, belief orself-deception; it is one of personal experience.The magnificent reality of “God in me” has beenexperienced first-hand. The presence of God is notalways accompanied by an emotional outburst ofgratitude and happiness; it just as often a briefmoment when “something” takes over and directsus out of harms way. That “something” I chooseto call God, for it is the same in all people’s livesand has been experienced far too often over themillennia to be written off as mere chance.Sometimes, that higher glimpse of somethingother than the ordinary, evolves over the weeks andmonths that follow, into an understanding of thetrue purpose of life. There is nothing like a nearmissin life to cause one to “sober up,” take one’sresponsibilities seriously and change direction inlife into more constructive, fulfilling activities.The supreme majesty of the system and orderof the Universe and the marvellous workings ofdivine laws become concepts of gratitude and asense of being uplifted and humbled at the sametime, and of course being completely awestruck atthe incredible refinement of that great “invisible28“Sometimes that higher glimpse of something otherthan the ordinary evolves over the weeks and monthsthat follow into an understanding of the true purposeof life.”hand” that sometime so forcefully moves our lives.Although not often spoken of, the experience ofDivine intervention in times of crisis is really notthat uncommon…, just not spoken of all that much.The general pattern of it has been repeated invarying degrees in innumerable lives for thousandsof years; and yet it has eluded the enlightenedcomprehension of some of the wisest men andwomen of recent history.A Glimpse of IlluminationSome philosophers and writers of world renownhave declared that with all their probing into themysteries of the universe they have found nothingto justify a belief in God. Though not conscious of it themselves,they have nevertheless been reflecting the ethos andhigh moral principles of love and compassion thata deep belief in God brings into our lives.The world is enriched by their wisdom, but it isso sad that with all their expanded consciousness,their deep understanding of the mechanicalworkings of the universe, not to mention theirprecious experience, they still fail to recogniseeven the first conscious glimpse of the source oftheir own creative power, imperfect though it mayappear through the lens of mortal eyes.In <strong>Rosicrucian</strong> terms thereare four levels on the path toenlightenment: the physical, theintellectual, the psychic and thespiritual. That higher glimpse Ihave spoken of may occur duringany one of these stages. But themore advanced we are along this path, the morewe have refined our abilities to operate with easein these four domains, the more profound andmeaningful our experience of God will be.Those who have such glimpses of illuminationcome to discern with increasing clarity and focus anawareness of their “inner God,” the one that leadsthem with gentleness, refinement and attentionto detail, to ultimate enlightenment. Every oneof us has the ability to reach a spiritual state ofmind that turns the fuzzy concept of God into theclear presence of a dear companion, and constantpresence at our side, always helping, alwaysnudging, cajoling and encouraging us to do whatis best. What a privilege it is to have that higherglimpse!

Did youexperience that sense of exhilaration withinyou, making you feel good? Have you everbeen moved inwardly by the sounds of naturesuch as birdsong, the wind blowing throughtrees, rain falling or perhaps the roar of thetide rolling in? These various sounds affect usbecause we are a part of the physical world inwhich we live and we are intimately attunedto the nuances of its physical presence.Ancient KnowledgeAlthough sound is woven so closely into thefabric of our existence, many of us do not givea moment’s to its subtlety and power. Thoseof ancient times did, and through the mysteryschools it became part of their culture to usesound as a healing tool.The observation of the beating of theheart, the ticking of the pulse and the rhythmof breathing reinforced their belief that eachindividual human body vibrates to a particularfrequency. They understood that specifictones correspond to specific areas of the bodyand that by the intonation of certain tones aprocess of healing could be started, leading toan eventual rebalancing of the patient’s innerharmony.What is Sound?We might ask: what is the nature of sound andhow is it defined in modern physics? Well, soundis given as “a means by which energy, constantlyalternating at great speed between potential andkinetic energy, is passed through air or othermedium as pressure waves.” 1Today’s science knows that everything in theuniverse is composed of moving clusters of energy,be they minerals, plants or animals, or “intelligent”creatures like human beings. These clusters ofenergy are surrounded by electromagnetic andgravitational fields and interact with each otherover varying distances, sometimes over very largedistances. etween them at molecular and atomic levels whenthey are physically in contact with each other.The Human VoiceThe human voice has a uniqueness all of its own.It is capable of a whole range of frequencies thatinduce a variety of emotional responses and healingeffects; and not just on other human beings either.Talking to plants may have had a bad press, butyears of serious research now strongly indicatesthat the human voice can have an effect on theirgrowth and well being. On the same track it hasalso been shown how water molecules are affectedby the sound of music and thought. 2The chanting, singing or intoning of resonantvowel sounds (in conjunction with intention) havebeen practised through the ages to alleviate pain,depression and general disease. For the past 90years at least, this has been part and parcel of theteachings of the <strong>Rosicrucian</strong> Order. The repetitionof words such as in the recitation of the rosary andalso of yoga mantras, have been demonstratedscientifically to yield beneficial effects such asinducing “favourable psychological and possiblyphysiological effects.” 3The Spoken Word“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word waswith God, and the Word was God…” So begins theGospel of John. So powerful was the sound of thespoken word, that ancient authority claimed thatthe universe came into being as the result of theword of God or the Creator.We might make the comparison with the “BigBang” theory of the genesis of the universe, if wefor a moment imagine that the exploding universecould be heard from the “nothingness” of thesingularity. The hiss of the background radiationfrom an event shortly after the Big Bang is still beingpicked up by radio astronomers today, a cosmicsound more ancient that anything we know.From the sound of the mother’s voice on thegrowing foetus, to the power of the gifted oratorupon his audience, the spoken word is an influentialmedium inciting a gamut of human emotions. Itseems incredible that so many different languagescan communicate exactly the same ideas andexpressions and giving rise to the same reactions.We don’t have to understand the language thatis being spoken in order to feel the effects of thesounds coming from the speaker. Through speechwe create the world we live in. But it must beHave you ever been moved inwardly by the sounds ofnature such as birdsong, the wind blowing through trees,rain falling or perhaps the roar of the tide rolling in?remembered that words have a creative power oftheir own. While reading to ourselves today westill hear the words in our head. There is a so calledvocative philosophy of sound that argues that “themeaning of words is most fundamentally found inthe human voice” 4 (rather than in human writing)and speaking out loud is still the most significantway of asserting ourselves.The Sound of MusicThe power of musical sound has been acknowledgedthroughout history. media. Although the ancients undoubtedly usedmusical sound for their pleasure, much moreimportance was placed on its ability as a healingtool. They were well aware of the vibratory natureof life and recognised this as the fundamentalcreative force.The vibratory energy of musical soundresonates with the vibratory chord of the individual,penetrating the physical body and making chemicalchanges in conjunction with other more esotericprocesses to restore balance the harmony to thebody. Blood pressure is lowered, the breathing rateslows and there is a calming effect on the mood andtemperament of the individual.Another effect that music has is on brain wavesand the hidden processes of the mind. We canbe visibly and mentally uplifted by its exquisiteharmonies and our consciousness can be elevatedabove the physical realm. Music is a well known aidto meditation. The Indian musician Ravi Shankaronce said: “Through music, one can reach God.”Sonic SoundToday we are surrounded by all kinds of nondescriptsounds: the constant hum of computers, fridges,microwaves, aeroplanes overhead and cars andother traffic, to name but a few. Although we maybecome relatively oblivious to their intrusions inour lives, we are nevertheless affected by them.Most of these are low frequency sounds thatbring about a disturbance to our harmonic bodies.Much of the time this can be shrugged off if wehave access to much higher frequency sounds suchas that found in nature: bird song, moving water,wind and such like.So let’s be conscious of the sounds around usand try to cultivate the habit of being close to thosesounds that are beneficial to us whenever we can.And if this is not possible, depending on wherewe live or what our lifestyles are, we should try togenerate or create our own sounds for those periodswhen we can be alone.References1.
