If you areinterested, speak to your SGA, then send an email to:futuresga@ailife.com.conventionwebsitepg. 04leadershipacademyGive It Away“ Your greatness is not what you have, it’s what you give.” — UnknownI’ve said many times that one of the greatest joys of leadership is theopportunity to help others succeed. I’m reminded of this each timeI have the pleasure to speak at a training session such as the recentLeadership Academy 301: Top Gun, held at the McKinney campus. The eagerness, excitement and passion I see in their faces reflects backon me, and I always feel as if I am the one that has benefitted mostfrom having shared my time and experience. As rewarding as it is, you’d be surprised how many people don’t showan aptitude for helping others succeed. There can be numerous reasonsfor this, from pride to insecurity. Probably the most common issuewith helping others succeed is that it takes time and effort. It’s easyto become stressed out trying to maximize our own progress, andmistakenly decide we haven’t the time or energy to help others blossom. The truth is that sharing what you know comes back to you, and youreap rewards disproportionate to that which you sow.I challenge each of you today to reach out and share what you know.Regardless of where you are today, few of us can say we got here by ourefforts alone. Where would we be if one or more people hadn’t givengenerously of themselves to help us?Having someone invest in another’s success speeds the development ofthat person by two to three times than if one had to rely on trial-anderrorand hard knocks. The act of sharing your knowledge and experiencebrings numerous advantages not only to the recipient, but to the giver aswell. Why? When we coach someone else, we are subconsciously coachingourselves and building leadership skills. In addition, you may receiveinformation and a point of view that you might not otherwise get from anyother source. Those we help become mirrors, and helping more than oneperson helps give you a fuller, more realistic reflection.Taking time out of your schedule to help other people adds perspectiveand helps prevent burnout. Thinking about what someone could becomewith your help can be a welcome break from day-to-day pressures. Youwill find yourself looking forward to your “helping time,” once you get inthe habit.Be accessible. Many people insulate themselves to help manage time. AsI told the Top Guns, when you are accessible, you demonstrate that youcare, and it translates into improved morale, and increased productivity. We all go through difficult periods both professionally and personally. When you reach out with moral support during these times, it makes ahuge difference.Investing in the success of others is just that: an investment. You willfind, as I have, that the payoff is substantially more than the investment. It is your responsibility. It is your destiny. It is your legacy. It is the rightthing to do.Writer & Copy EditorLeah Frylcfry@ailife.comLead DesignerAnnalee MacFieamacfie@ailife.comContributorsKaren Cannard-CurtisPaula ClementsLana GiebeJoe JuarezMary LampertAngel HendersonLisa LaValleyMuñeca Moody-YanezPat NevarezLinda ResendezAmy RiveraTeri PorterRobyn TalleySandy YergerRhonda YorkHome Office254-761-6400Web Siteswww.ailife.comwww.nilife.comwww.mylifeatail.comwww.mylifeatnilico.comwww.ailacademy.comwww.ailnews.comSocial Mediahttp://twitter.com/AIL-NILICOhttp://tinyurl.com/AIL-NILICOFacebookRecruiting Supportwww.ailife.com/recruiting© 2011 by American IncomeLife Insurance Companytotal bonuses paid outThis month AIL and NILICO paid a total of $2,268,166in bonuses. DirectionLEADERSHIP ACADEMYThe 2011 Leadership Academy training sessions are well underway!Leadership 201: Building For Ownership, led by KevinDunn, was held the last week in April. Close to fortyattendees polished their leadership skills.More than twenty future leaders were on hand forLeadership 301: Top Gun, led by Larry Strong, held thefirst week of May.The next opportunity will be Leadership 101: Fundamentalsof Agency Building the week of June 20th, and led byRobert Gray. If you are interested in attending, talk to yourSGA. Deadline for registration is June 6th.“LDS 201 was what I needed. I love leading and helpingpeople and changing people’s lives. My focus now will beon recruiting alone and I will have a pipeline of 20 peopleby June 1st — and then, the sky is the limit!” — MarkoJankovic, Cohen-Cohen AgencyThe “Track”Larry StrongVice President ofAgency Leadership DevelopmentWe use the term “track” a lot at American Income and NationalIncome. Just a few examples are, “How are you tracking your plan toreach your sales goals?” “We have a proven success track developedover many years that will virtually guarantee your success if you workit!” “Our agency has 2 career tracks: one for career agents and theother for those who desire to become an Agency Builder.” There aremany more but you get the point, right? The “TRACK,” as it relates to AIL/NILICO, might be defined as“the course or path along which your career moves and progresses.”This month’s issue of Spotlight highlights the fulfillment of thefield leadership and agency building track — the position of StateGeneral Agent. And what a phenomenal destination that is!The SGA position stands head-and-shoulders above any other fieldcontract I have ever seen, in terms of wealth building. And, of course, there is no amount of advance commissions and renewals that canoutweigh the profound benefits of making a positive impact on asmany lives as you do at the SGA level.DorianOldhamSGA Tenure

You must be theabsolute best-of-the-best. You must qualify. You must work like you havenever worked before. You can never let your foot off the pedal. And if allthat falls into place, you have earned your shot at financial prosperity. In this article of the Spotlight, we have presented an overview ofthe pinnacle of Opportunity Unlimited – State General Agent. Iwas a State General Agent, a member of the Executive Council ofState General Agents, and I provide leadership to the State GeneralAgents in my present capacity with American Income Life. Today,I’m very proud to have assumed the point role in evaluating andpromoting candidates who desire to achieve this contract level. Forall these reasons, I’m qualified to elaborate on why this issue of theSpotlight was assembled.First, the timing is right. For many years, the company had a cappednumber of State General Agents. This was because the SGAwas accountable for lead generation and Public Relations teamcontracting and development. You couldn’t have more than one SGAin a city because you couldn’t have two different PR Teams buttingheads. But when the company finished centralization in 2010 andbecame the sole provider of public relations efforts, it enabled theplacement of multiple State General Agents in the same territories. In areas where more than enough leads were being developed forjust one SGA, the Company placed additional SGAs. From 2007 to2010, the SGA count jumped from 43 to 70, and the company’s salesgrew almost fifty percent. The company has several positions open today. You can grow justtwo ways: one, get more from what you got; or two, get more of whatYou know that saying about the top one percent. Well, we currentlyhave about 4200 agents, so the top one percent of our companywould be about 42. The reality is that the top one percent isn’t readyto relocate and pursue the pinnacle. Many — rightly so — choose tolive in their present region to be near family. Many have great roleswith their current agencies and want to keep the status quo. Manyhave spouses in select occupations that cannot relocate. But manypotential candidates just don’t know enough about the opportunity. In the past, the culture of the Company has not stressed offeringOpportunity Unlimited as much of a priority. This facet of ourCompany is evolving. Offering Opportunity Unlimited by promotingan SGA needs to be the ultimate in leadership accomplishments. This change will take high energy and much time, and I’m highlycommitted to leading this change. Now and in the foreseeable future, there isn’t a better time to makeyourself a candidate. While this in no way ensures your promotion, our current system of financing, along with a promotion bonus of upto $25K for your personal use, a supportive and improved Directorsprogram to guide you, plus several significant lead inventories makethe timing right. When you become an SGA, you also get to bring amanager or two from your existing hierarchy to help you get startedwith recruiting and field training. While I would love to hear from you, we won’t even have an initialconversation unless your present SGA is a part of the process. Outof respect for the SGA body and their existing management teams,we won’t promote you unless your SGA has time to develop adequatereplacement(s) to fill your impending vacancy. It’s simply the rightthing to do. When you become a promoting SGA, the same courtesywill be extended to you.I sincerely hope this issue of the Spotlight clears the path for the bestof-the-bestconsidering climbing to the pinnacle. It’s not for everyone.22 Spotlight May 2011 Make the Difference Make the Difference Spotlight May 2011 23
