Letter to Our Community 

Dear Friends of the Foundation, 

We have many things to be thankful for in Newaygo County: a beautiful environment, excellent 

schools and libraries, arts and culture, outstanding health and human services, kind, caring 

neighbors, and so much more. 

For the past five years, the Community Foundation has been guided by a 

strategic plan focused on grantmaking to benefit children and families. We’re 

proud to have made significant progress since 1999, and yet, we feel it’s 

important to continuously improve and maximize our efforts. 

Over the next decade, the population of Newaygo County is expected to grow 

by more than twenty percent. That’s on top of record setting increases over the 

last twenty years. Growth brings opportunities, challenges, and a need to better 

define our priorities. To address these changes, the board of trustees recently 

reviewed and renewed our five-year strategic plan. Through a great deal of 

community input, time, discussion, and effort, the board agreed on three areas 

of priority: environment, social wellness, and economic development. 

First, let us reinforce that our focus on current needs of children and families will not be 

abandoned. By addressing the three priority areas listed above, we hope to positively impact 

issues affecting people throughout our community. Our desire is to continue reacting to the 

needs of the community today, as well as proactively addressing the issues that affect our future. 

Throughout this report, you will see our values, mission, and vision expressed in the roles we 

play in the community. We hope these stories come to life as you read of donors and grantees 

making a positive impact in the lives of friends and neighbors throughout Newaygo County.

The Fremont Area Community Foundation is a nonprofit, community corporation created 

by and for the people of Newaygo County. Our mission is to improve the quality of life for 

people in Newaygo County. 

We fulfill this mission through five primary means: 

Leadership -- monitoring quality of life and acting to address needs and opportunities 

Donors -- helping people fulfill their charitable giving goals 

Endowment -- building permanent community capital 

Grantmaking -- supporting the organizations that serve our community 

Philanthropy -- encouraging giving and volunteering for everyone 

The Foundation manages more than 200 charitable funds with more than $174 million 

in assets. Last year, the Foundation supported organizations throughout Newaygo County 

with over $8.7 million in approved grants. Since 1972, the Foundation has granted over 

$108 million to benefit the residents of Newaygo County. 

We are here to help donors make a difference in our community for good, forever.

on arts and culture, community development, education, the 

environment, and community health. We closely monitor community 

issues, opportunities, and resources in these areas and work with the 

community, nonprofit groups, and individuals addressing them.

The Foundation’s Youth Advisory Committee (YAC) is comprised of 21 high school students from 

each public school in Newaygo County. The role of the YAC is to help identify local youth needs 

and priorities, and then make grant recommendations to the Foundation’s board. Grants are 

funded using income from the Youth Endowment Fund. Council members also participate in 

fund development and community service, and play an important role advocating for “youth as 

resources” to the community.

The Amazing X Charitable Trust was

In response to the Elderly Needs Survey 

of 1988 (and the grantmaking initiative 

that followed), this fund was created in 

1992, acquiring its own assets through 

a transfer of funds from the Foundation. 

The Foundation provides administrative

seven-member board, headed by Board

The Foundation, directed by its 

Environmental Committee,

community-based environmental 

opportunities that aim to 

improve and maintain Newaygo 

County’s natural resources. Areas

planning, and promotion of

Newaygo County. Love INC 

volunteers, shown here, deliver 

furniture to needy households. 

Items are donated by people 

throughout the county and sold 

through its retail store -- which 

helps support operating costs -or 

given to those in need.

A Steward of Community Resources 

The Fremont Area Community Foundation is a steward of assets that 

have been entrusted to us by generations of caring donors. We take 

our responsibility very seriously, and realize that we are accountable 

to every member of our community. 

To ensure that the goals of the Foundation continue to be met, the 

Board of Trustees has developed investment policies and guidelines 

that provide for prudent asset management, and has established a 

committee of board members and volunteers knowledgeable in the 

investment field to oversee the investment activities of the Foundation.
