A Message

From the President

Partnering together to build the City of God!

At Bishop Foley, our strong academic and activity programs

prepare our students for their futures as followers of Christ

and leaders in their communities. Throughout this issue of

the Voice of the Ventures you will glimpse the busy world of

BFC during the just completed school year. I hope you are

inspired by the faith and strength of our community.

Viability, Sustainability and Growth are keys to Advancing

Catholic Education. In this difficult time, I encourage you

to consider supporting two activities which will allow us

to broaden our program, and our impact on the greater

community. The chapel is at the heart of our building. This

sacred space is in its original form from the day we opened

in 1965 and is in dire need of renewal. Funding for this

project is well under way, and work has commenced but

we continue to need your support. Your partnership in this

project will advance the spiritual growth of all who use the

chapel (pg. 22). In the second activity, a group of alumni

Frehman

Retreat

and parents are partnering on

a turf project to improve our athletic facilities, and benefit

recruitment, enrollment and retention (pg. 23). Both of

these projects are part of our long range plans for BFC.

Filled with the gifts of the Holy Spirit, we can do all things

through Christ who strengthens us.

Wishing you a summer filled with many blessings, family

and friends, rest and relaxation, faith and joy in the Lord.

Thank you for all that you do for BFC as we partner

together to build the City of God!

Responding to the Challenge

This year’s Bishop Foley seniors graduated after the

Baccalaureate Mass that was held at Guardian Angels

Church this spring. In my closing remarks after the

conferral of diplomas, I issued a challenge to the Class

of 2011 which I will extend to all those who are reading

this publication:

“ . . . become known as the most generous class of

Bishop Foley alumni. Don’t just leave Bishop Foley.

Take the best part of it with you. Live out the mission of

this school: Create a Christ-like environment wherever

you go. Strive for excellence in whatever you do.

Continue to develop in mind, body, and spirit. And then,

give back to your school, whether it be time, talent or

treasure, so that others may benefit from an education

at a Catholic school in the same way that you have.”

This is an exciting time to be associated with Bishop

Foley Catholic High School. We will begin two major

building projects this summer. One is remodeling the

chapel which has not been updated since 1965. The

other is on the football field (also used for soccer and

lacrosse) which is in the first phase of replacing the

playing area with state of the art synthetic turf. We are

able to start both improvements through the generosity

of our alumni, current families and friends. None of

these funds come from our operating budget. They are

the result of donations specifically earmarked for these

projects.

Beyond the remodeled surface and structures, Bishop

Foley continues to offer a quality education- one that is

accredited by Advanced Ed (formerly known as North

Central Association), a nationally and internationally

recognized accreditation association. And despite the

financial challenges we face with our current economy,

our school families sacrifice to make a commitment to

Bishop Foley Catholic High School. In fact, the students

raised $19,000 for scholarships and grants in this year’s

Walkathon. However, for so many prospective students

who long for a Catholic school education, the tuition

is an insurmountable obstacle. We rely on benefactors

who are willing to continue the legacy of excellence by

donating to scholarships and participating in school

sponsored fund raising events. The need is great, but

so is the opportunity to make a difference that will last

for generations.

Peggy Stack is an x-ray tech at William Beaumont

Hospital in Royal Oak. She is married and lives in

Royal Oak.

1971

AnnMarie (Guzdzial) Olmstead is living in Warren.

She and her husband have three children and four

granddaughters.

1974

Sgt. Richard Joynt is a Dearborn police investigator

working in the youth division.

1975

Catherine (Waldorf) Casteel has been married to

Dave for over 30 years. They have two college graduate

sons and two grandchildren. She works as a

Financial Advisor at Ameriprise Financial in Troy.

Patty (McHale) Telmos and husband of 25 years,

Bob, live near Savannah. They are both working for

Gulfstream Aerospace Corporation, as is their oldest

son Steve. Their youngest, Jason, is in his 3rd year at

USCB.

Fran Scislowicz was recently inducted into the

Michigan High School Softball Coaches Association

Hall of Fame. He has been coaching softball and girls’

basketball at Rochester Adams for over 20 years. He

and wife Nancy have been married 27 years and have

three children.

Rick Rushton moved to Florida in 1981 working in

commercial glass while building EPCOT center. He

moved from Florida to Austin, Texas in 2007 where he

Contract Glazing. He and his wife enjoy

family life with 5 wonderful children ranging

in age from 13 to 32 years old. Rick

reports he has learned the old adage,

“happiness is not measured by the success

you make, but rather by the journey

you take.”

Janis (Susalla) Foley is an attorney.

She and her husband, Christopher, will

be celebrating 30 years of marriage and

have 3 daughters who are 23, 20 and 15

years of age. She is a partner at Cooper

& Walinski, a large woman owned law

firm in Toledo, Ohio.

1981

Gary Rushton earned Bachelor of Science

degree in Electrical Engineering

from Lawrence Technological University

and a Master of Systems Engineering

from the University of Michigan. He is

now working for GM. He lives in Warren

with his wife, Sherrie, and their two

daughters, Samantha (’10) and

Alexis (‘14).

Michele (Tulak) Gorecki practices

dentistry with her husband, Christopher.

They are partners at work in addition to

being partners for life!

Jim Krygier is a product manager for

Alro Steel. He lives in Sterling Heights

with his wife, Lori and daughter,

Kaitlyn (’14).

1983

Michael Ehr received his Bachelor of

Science degree in Mechanical Engineering

from Wayne State University. His

professional career has taken him from

Michigan to Wisconsin, Ohio and Iowa

while working for Kraft Foods. Currently,

he is the Pasta Unit Manager for Buhler

Inc., a Swiss company with US Headquarters

in Minneapolis.

Russ Ortisi is working for AIAG Company,

and is an active member of the

BFC Booster board. He and Trisha live in

Macomb with their three sons, Joe (’09,)

Jimmy Rhoades is hosting a WXYZ TV

Kevin Hopp has been serving in the

Air Force for more than 12 years. He is

currently stationed in Louisiana. He is

living in Houghton with his wife and two

children, and working toward a degree in

civil engineering.

Kristie (Buk) Lathers is living in Cooper

City, FL with husband Rob. We send her

our prayers and thoughts as she battles

cancer.

Laura Davis owns her own event planning

business, Laura Davis Events, and

lives in Berkley with her family.

Abby Hagland works for Enterprise

Holdings. She is an Area Rental Manager

for the Enterprise Rent-A-Car brand.

She has been with the company since

she graduated from Central Michigan

University.

David Lewinski is currently working as

a Financial Analyst for Fanuc Robotics in

Rochester. David married Lauren Mazzonne

(’03) on July 24, 2010 The wedding

party included Erin Murphy (’03),

Kendyl Schultz (’03), Kevin Schornack

(’99), Bryon Lewinski (’95), Todd Lewinski

(’94), and Joe Mazzonne (’02).

Katherine (Green) Samulak lives in

Chelsea with her husband. is a Civil Engineer

at Commonwealth Associates in

Jackson, Michigan. She lives in Chelsea

with her husband, Paul, and new baby,

Hannah Katherine, born June 13, 2011.

Kristina Buszta is working as a nurse at

Harper Hospital DMC.

called Renaissance Capital Alliance

(RCA). RCA is a finance firm and will be

doing capital sales for the organization.

Kristin (Dillard) Perlin married David

in August 2010 and lives in Chesterfield

Township. She teaches 3rd grade at St.

Paul’s Catholic School in Grosse Pointe.

Jaclyn Navarro Is a Registered Nurse

with the University of Michigan Health

Systems

2006

Julie Marie Bazydlo graduated from

Purdue in December 2010 with a BA in

Communications and a minor in Psychology.

She is working in Troy.

Alaina Maten graduated this ApriI with

a finance major and was commissioned

as a 2nd Lieutenant in the Army National

Guard. She is working for General Motors

in Warren as an Assistant Buyer with

Supply Chain and Global Sales.

2007

Katie Crombe has been named a Fulbright

Scholar finalist and has graduated

from Alma College this spring.

2008

Evan Laske is a third year student at

Michigan Technological University majoring

in both Computer and Electrical

Engineering. He is a member of the MTU

Aerospace Enterprise team which took

first place in the University Nanosat 6

competition sponsored by the Air Force

Research Laboratory. The team, whose

154 pound satellite was engineered to

help the Department of Defense gather

information on satellites, has earned the

privilege of having the DOD launch their

custom-made satellite into orbit. Evan is

pictured working at a console in Mission

Control at Johnson Space Center in

Houston during an internship.

2010

Christopher Hideg was awarded a

FIRST robotics college scholarship and

is attending University of Detroit/Mercy.

He is a co-author of, and a member

of the national technical development

team for, the Boy Scouts of America

Robotics Merit Badge to be released

this year. Chris is pictured with Kaye

Chervenak (MCCU) in December, 2010,

when he was a panelist at the Michigan

Jumpstart Coalition Educators Conference,

describing the benefits of the BFC

Student-Run Michigan Catholic Credit

Union (MCCU) Branch, and the Foley

Financial Professionals Club.

Matt Sheehan is majoring in Journalism

at Michigan State and writes for Bleacher

Report (bleacherreport.com).

Alumni

Career Day 2011

was a monumental day

Alumni were invited to spend a recent afternoon at BFC

offering stories about their lives from the time they left

Foley to today. Each alum prepared an overview of their

profession and spoke to their decisions or, in some cases,

luck in finding a career path that suited them.

The presenters did an awesome job of engaging the

students and sharing their stories. Comments from the

students included: “the presentation was well organized”,

“it was fun to hear what a day is like in that field”, ”cool

and interesting”, “good to hear what the job outlook is”,

“amazing how much education would be needed.” The

most important part for the students was the realization

that their career path is starting NOW right here at BFC.

They need to study and develop skills in many areas

which might attract an employer to hire them in the future.

The afternoon concluded with prayer and thanks from

Fr. Gerry to all of our presenters who took time off from

work, travelled long distances, or arranged a skype connection

from Texas to be with us on Career Day. As the

presenters strolled through the halls of Foley, they commented

how pleased they were to be back “home”. Many

took time to visit with teachers or reminisce with

classmates.

Our sincerest thanks to all those who made this afternoon

happen. Many presenters said they would return, but we

invite many more alums to come back “home” to share

their stories and careers with our young people. If you

would like to share in the “giving back” next year, our date

Our second service day was filled with good feelings and cherished

moments. The Student Leadership Team worked with faculty to

secure locations, plan activities and assign tasks. Early in the week

a pep rally built excitement, featuring Splat Experience artist Mark

Eckel painting a picture of Jesus. After a hot breakfast and prayer

service, students, parents and teachers went out into the community

to meet, clean, feed, clothe and assist people in need throughout the

metropolitan Detroit area. The event shirts, designed by Father Gerry

and executed by Mr. Rich Fischer (Art Department) identified us and

will remind us all year of the importance of “Going out into the deep”

in their service to God and neighbor.

Testament

to Service

Bishop Foley sophomores arriving at the Solonus Center

in Detroit for their retreat day, were amazed to recognize

a group of volunteers, Foley retired teachers, staff and

administrators. The meeting was serendipitous. For the

volunteers the meeting was a wonderful affirmation of

their work while at Foley. For the students, seeing these

retirees volunteering was a recognition that their Christian

service assignments do not end at graduation. Foley

retirees are a testament to the importance of service to

others in the mission of catholic education. One retiree

said, “Volunteer work serves as a great learning and

growing experience – even at our age.”

Mrs. Barb McGinnis, (Theology Department Chair, ret.),

organizes a group of BFC retirees who volunteer monthly

at the Capuchin Soup Kitchen, and when needed for

office work. This group includes Mrs. Judy Arriola

(Foreign Language Department Chair, ret.), Mrs. Dee

Mullaney (staff and BFC alumni parent), Mrs. Helen Mudell

(maintenance staff, ret.), Ms. Nadine Ramaut (physical ed

teacher and coach, ret.), Mrs. Joyce Andersen (theology

teacher, ret.), Sister Mary Ann Ford (math and theology

teacher, ret.), and Mrs. Joanne Molnar (English teacher

and Principal, ret.). Many of these retirees can be seen

at Foley supporting fund raisers and events or substitute

teaching. Mrs. Mona Russell (Art teacher and Assistant

Principal, ret.) teaches an after school photography class

at BFC. Her students receive top honors in Scholastic Art

Competitions year after year.

Some retirees work in hospitals. Mrs. Carolyn Caste

(English Department Chair, ret.) and her husband work

two days per week volunteering for the Holley Ear Institute

at St. John’s Hospital in Detroit. They screen infants for

deafness and hearing loss and assist in parent education

about child development. Mrs. Joyce Andersen has

volunteered for 14 years at Troy Beaumont as liaison

between patients and their visitors. Mr. Jack Levely

(Science teacher, ret.) has served as a volunteer fireman,

has put his energy in their church’s food drive for the local

pantry. Mrs. Linda Levely (Science Department Chair, ret.)

volunteers for the Red Cross in addition to working at the

local library and serving on community event committees.

Mrs. Barb McGinnis is active at St. Therese of Lisieux

Parish. She also coordinates and recruits lectors, ushers

and Eucharistic Ministers for liturgies with the Archdiocese

group called Widowed Friends.

Others go beyond their immediate communities.

Continuing an activity started while teaching at Foley, Sr.

Mary Ann Ford spends several weeks each year sharing

life with people of Gaza through her work as a member

of the Core Community of Michigan Peace Team. Core

Community is a non-profit organization that teaches

nonviolence, trains people in its practice and places

volunteers where people with courage are asked to

practice the active nonviolence of role models such as

Gandhi and Martin Luther King, Jr.

And for others, volunteering is a family affair. Mrs. Eileen

Betley (theology teacher and SADD moderator, ret.), her

husband Bob, their children Maria (Tom) Betley Schremes

’84, Meghan (Greg) Betley McCliment ’85, and John

(Nicole) Betley ’88 and grandchildren are all active in

church activities at St. Aloysuis Parish in Detroit. Bob is

a co-chairperson of the Fellowship Committee and Eileen,

chairperson of the Education Commission keeping them

busy with dinners, receptions, children’s activities and

outreach programs. On February 9th, Eileen and Bob

were presented the “Catch the Spirit Award” by the Detroit

Catholic Pastoral Alliance. Mrs. Betley says that her work

at St. Al’s and her involvement in the Catechesis of the

Good Shepherd have been the best experiences of her life

in the field of religious education.

Foley retirees also work tirelessly and quietly as tutors,

Eucharistic ministers, lectors, and care takers of family

members, parents and grandchildren. They take to heart

what they once taught: the power of service combined

with our faith brings endless joy. At Foley, our teachers,

staff and administrators - past and present - serve willingly

and graciously.

Congratulations to Ashley Thornton ’12,

Miss Clawson, 2011. In addition to her

school, drama and sports activities,

Ashley is a 2nd Lt. in the Civil Air Patrol.

She received the Mary von Mach Flight

Scholarship and is going to Oshkosh WI for

flight school this summer.

TECHNOLOGY AWARDS

Foley earned 1st Place in King of the Hill competition at U of

D Engineering Technology Day.

Alex Binno, ‘11, earned First Place in Web Design at the

Engineering and Computer Science Experience at University

of Michigan, Dearborn.

May 14th was a busy evening for Foley Girls.

Students, alumnae, moms, grandmas, aunts

and friends enjoyed the second Girls Night

Out at Leon & Lulu in Clawson. Delicious

food, decadent desserts, darling fashions,

dazzling prizes, delightful shopping and

conversations only divas would understand

filled the hall during this fund raising event.

The photo booth was a particularly popular

stop during the evening. Our guests included

We are pleased to announce Christine Gorkiewicz and Donna and

Terry Schalk as the Heart of Foley honorees this year. Honored

for their volunteer efforts, high quality of service and distinguished

commitment to our community and mission – they are truly partners

in maintaining our strong community.

We thank the 2010-2011 BFC Booster Board for

their tireless devotion, continuing support, energy and

enthusiasm.

Mary Leary will be retiring after 37 years at BFC. All of that time has

been spent in the math department where enthusiasm and creative story telling

became her trademarks. These comments seem to summarize our feelings and

wishes:

“I loved both of the math classes with you. Having such a great basis in calculus

let me ace the AP test and skate through calculus two, three, and four in college.

You were a wonderful teacher and I hope you have an equally wonderful retirement.”

“I have had the pleasure to know you as both teacher and colleague. You’ve

proven to be outstanding in both areas! Always a smile on your face and a good

word to share! I hope you have a happy & blessed retirement!”

“I remember being in math class and enjoying math...math! I never thought that

was possible! You are a wonderful teacher both in math and in life as well. I will

never forget your enthusiasm and the positive atmosphere you created in the

classroom. I hope the next leg of your journey is just as successful as the one

you just completed.”
