SATELLINE ® -2AScReplacement for the Models 1AS and 2ASThe discontinued SATELLINE products 1AS and 2AS arebeing replaced by a fully compatible, up-to-date radio modemSATELLINE-2ASc. In comparison to its predecessors it offersnew, useful features, including operating frequency selectableby the user, higher carrier power and better noise performance. The SATELLINE-2ASc is a small and lightweight radio modemfor half-duplex transfer of data messages. It consists of amodem part and a synthesised transceiver. The output carrierpower of the transmitter is adjustable between 10 mW…1 W. The maximum data speed in transmission is 4800/2400bps with channel widths 25/20 kHz, respectively.Like the 1AS and 2AS, the substitute 2ASc can be used fordiverse applications involving point-to-point as well as pointto-multipointwireless connections. Typical application areasinclude data transmission to and from isolated objects orbetween portable or mobile terminals, as well as alarmtransmission, remote control and surveillance, telemetry andGPS positioning. The direct connection distances are typicallya few kilometres, at the maximum. By using the maximumoutput power of 1 W, distances up to 40 kilometres can, however, be reached under favourable conditions.Equipment and Know-how fromyour radio modem supplierSATEL Oy is a Finnish electronics andtelecommunications company that specialisesin wireless data communications. It designs, manufactures and marketsradio modems for data and alarm transfersystems. The main user groups are industrialcompanies and public organisations.Today SATEL is one of Europe’s leadingmanufacturers of narrow-band radiomodems. SATELLINE radio modems aretype-approved in most European countriesand globally.SATEL Oy has prepared an extensiveset of Application Notes describing differentways of utilising the SATEL radiomodems in various applications. For furtherinformation about our products andtheir applications, please see our homepage www.satel.fi or contact your localdealer.Up-to-date technology anduseful featuresThe SATELLINE-2ASc operates in thefrequency band 380…470 MHz. Two differentchannel spacings, 25 kHz and 20kHz are available. The correspondingnumbers of radio channels are 80 and100 and the maximum data speeds 4800bps and 2400 bps, respectively. The operatingfrequency is selectable within+/- 1 MHz from the allocated basic frequency, and can be set by the user withthe radio modem in the ProgrammingMode. The radio modem is compatiblewith the RS-232 interface, facilitatingtrouble-free connection to most dataterminals and systems.Data transmission by the SATELLINE-2ASc is initiated in two alternative ways:If data is entered from a terminal directlyon the TD line, no handshaking is required. In case the radio modem is usedas a replacement or extension of a systembased on the 1AS/2AS modems and operatingat a data speed of 2400 or 4800bps, RTS/CTS handshaking must be usedto ensure compatibility with the existingsystem. In reception, the data squelch techniqueused effectively prevents spuriouscharacters, originating from radio interference, from entering the RD line. TheReceived Signal Strength Indicator(RSSI) measures the field strength of thetransmitting radio. This feature is particularlyuseful in systems that include severalreceivers, as one can choose amongthese the one that provides optimumreception for the incoming transmission.Compatibility with existing 1ASand 2AS applicationsThe SATELLINE-2ASc is primarily intendedfor the replacement of the earliergeneration of SATELLINE-1AS / 2ASradio modems, as well as for the extensionor renovation of the existing systems. Inaddition to being compatible with theModels 1AS and 2AS, it offers a numberof significant improvements. The highercarrier power available facilitates longerconnection distances. The increasednumber of radio channels and free selectionof the operating frequency enhancethe flexibility of a radio modem system. Thanks to the programmability of theradio modem, the rest of the operatingparameters of the SATELLINE-2ASc areeasily initialised or changed by using aterminal program.
