<strong>Chapter</strong> 8 <strong>Vector</strong> <strong>Spaces</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>Quantum</strong> <strong>Mechanics</strong> 109surround<strong>in</strong>g environment 4 , all macroscopic systems (with very few exceptions such assuperfluid SQUID junctions) are subject to decoherence. This process is believed to playa crucial role <strong>in</strong> why, at the macroscopic level, physical systems, which are all <strong>in</strong>tr<strong>in</strong>sicallyquantum mechanical, behave <strong>in</strong> accordance with the classical laws of physics. It is alsoone of the ma<strong>in</strong> corrupt<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>fluences that prevent a quantum computer from function<strong>in</strong>gas it should. <strong>Quantum</strong> computers rely for their function<strong>in</strong>g on the ‘qubits’ rema<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>l<strong>in</strong>ear superpositions of states, but the ever-present decoher<strong>in</strong>g effects of the environmentwill tend to destroy these delicate quantum states before a computation is completed, orelse at the very least <strong>in</strong>troduce errors as the computation proceeds. Controll<strong>in</strong>g decoherenceis therefore one of the major challenges <strong>in</strong> the development of viable quantumcomputers.So, the bottom l<strong>in</strong>e is that it is only for protected isolated systems that quantum effects aremost readily observed, and it is for microscopic systems that this state of affairs is to befound.
