This course will be broken into two segments. First, advanced<br />

strategies for dealing with insurance carriers including EOB<br />

interpretation, follow‐up practices and the appeal process. Second,<br />

convincing delinquent patients to remit payments is an art form.<br />

Developing an effective collection plan that will include reviewing<br />

your entire billing, insurance, managed care and collection process<br />

is essential to developing a successful plan.<br />

MEA2340 ‐ Coding Cases I (Physician Professional Services)<br />

This class is a hands‐on coding practicum that will allow the<br />

student to perform practical application to the coding skills learned<br />

in the “Introduction to Coding” class. A review of the basic coding<br />

guidelines will be given, however, this class will focus on coding<br />

from case studies and operative reports using the ICD‐9‐CM<br />

Volume I and II, CPT‐4 and HCPCS code books.<br />

MEA2344 ‐ Workers' Compensation and Specialties<br />

This course will cover the workers’ compensation system and<br />

its related terminology. A compensable injury under workers’<br />

compensation will be defined, as well as, how to report an injury.<br />

The various forms used by workers’ compensation will be<br />

discussed. The OMFS (Official Medical Fee Schedule) will be<br />

covered.<br />

tal coders. The UB‐92 claim form will be utilized for these case<br />

study scenarios.<br />

professional (outpatient) guidelines. The evaluation and<br />

management documentation guidelines will be discussed, as well<br />

as, the proper use of modifiers.<br />

This course will cover the billing guidelines from the various<br />

Tricare. Medicaid is a state and federal program and may have<br />

different guidelines from state to state. This class will look at the<br />

Medi‐Cal program model.<br />

guidelines. The proper diagnostic assignment based on<br />

documentation will be discussed, as well as, the proper use of<br />

multiple codes, 3 digit, 4 digit and 5 digit specificity.<br />

guidelines will be discussed, as well as, the proper use of<br />

This course will cover the third party payers (Managed Care,<br />

Medicare, Medicaid, Tricare and Worker’s Compensation) and its<br />

related terminology. This course will give the billing and coding<br />

students, an in depth look at how third party payer’s bill. It will<br />

cover the following information, rule and regulation, submission of<br />

the correct claim form, the criteria needed for each payer, the<br />

federal laws for each payer, identification of benefits or non‐<br />

benefits for each third party payer, how to calculate payment, and<br />

scenario.<br />
