Elizabeth McWhae Laurie was alone in the house at the Poplars in the 1860s bakingbread when a strange man rode down the river. Mrs Laurie of course invited him inand gave him a meal. While he was eating she said she’d not caught his name?He said ‘Fred Ward, madam, though I’m often known as Thunderbolt.’In a start, she dropped a big bowl of flour, smashing it all over the floor. She told thefamily he seemed such a nice polite young man!He thanked her and went on his way, much amused by her nervousness...As told by Marie Toshack,July 2010.Rawdon Vale Sports, 1930s, with the site of the Poplars behind.
