New Student Orientation / Placement TestsORIENTATIONThe New Student Orientation provides you with acomprehensive overview of information, resources, andtools needed to be successful at Skyline College and isrequired for new students.To register for a New Student Orientation, log ontoWebSMART and click on “Schedule Appointments,” orcontact the Counseling Center, Bldg. 2, (650) 738-4318.• The orientation program is one day unless noted otherwise.Students are advised to bring a lunch.• The orientation provides you with an opportunity tocomplete both Steps 3 and 4 of enrollment (Orien ta -tion and Meeting with a Counselor). This saves youtime and will allow you to receive a registration dateshortly after completion of your orientation workshop!NOTE: Contact Counseling at (650) 738-4318 for dates/times of ESOL New Student Orientations.ONLINE ORIENTATION OPTIONThis option is available to those who cannot attend ascheduled session. Contact Counseling for more infor -mation, (650) 738-4318.The online orientation option is not recommended forstudents:• who are recent high school graduates,• new college students, or• who have limited English proficiencyHOW TO SCHEDULE A PLACEMENT TESTComputerized placement tests for English, English forSpeakers of Other Languages (ESOL) and math are availablein the Assessment Center, Building 2, Room 2232.See the website for hours of operation, as they aresubject to change during the semester. You must allowenough time to complete the appropriate assessment(s):• English or ESOL and Math test together: 2.5 hrs• English or ESOL only: allow for 2 hrs• Math only: allow for 1.5 hrsTo schedule an assessment:1. Go to https://WebSMART.smccd.edu and use yourG# and PIN# to access2. Click on “Schedule Appointments”3. Click on “Placement Test Appointment”4. Click on “Make appointments”5. Select “Make appointment”6. Select the appropriate placement test you wantto take.7. Click “Continue”8. Select day/time that is best for you and then click“Find Appointments”9. Select the appointment10. Confirm your appointment by entering your phonenumber and email address, then click “Continue”11. You will see your scheduled Placement Testinformation.If you have any questions or would like to check if thereare any “drop-in” times available, stop by the AssessmentCenter or call (650) 738-4150.Retest Policy1. Math Placement results are valid for two years fromthe date the test was taken.2. If a student does not accept the recommendedplacement, he/she may retake the same placementtest one additional time within a two-year period.In order to retake the same test, the student mustwait a minimum of 14 calendar days from the initialtest date.3. A student who has completed a course in theEnglish, ESOL or math sequence may take theplacement test to determine his/her current com -petency level in English, ESOL and math courses,provided that two years have elapsed since thecourse was completed.4. For any other special circumstance, or with aninstructor or counselor recommendation, a studentmay petition to retest through the Dean ofCounseling.ExemptionIf one of the following applies to you, you may be exemptfrom placement testing:1. You have taken the Math Placement Test at SkylineCollege, CSM or Cañada College within the last twoyears.2. You have taken a placement test at anotherCalifornia Community College and a Skyline counselorhas reviewed your results for equivalency.3. You are a former student or transfer student andhave completed course work in mathematics and/orEnglish with a grade of “C” or better from anotheraccredited college in the United States. (Provideunofficial transcripts or other evidence of grades toyour counselor.)4. Submit test scores from a College Board AdvancedPlacement Test (AP) in English Language or inEnglish Literature with a score of 3, 4 or 5.5.
