F I L T E RE L E M E N T SThree types of filter elements are available in Universal’s cartridge type filters and filter silencers. The pleated paper elements providethe highest efficiency and are considered standard. However, for less demanding service, pleated felt and wire mesh elements areavailable. The three types of elements are completely interchangeable and will fit either of the two series of filter housings (CBF, CBFI).Pleated Paper ElementSPECIFICATIONS:n High-quality industrial grade filterpaper—pleated and oven-curedduring production.n Oven-cured plastisol end caps withmolded sealing beads (larger sizeshave metal end caps and closed-cellrubber gaskets).n Media efficiency: 99.5% on 2 microns;97% on 1 micron.SERVICE INSTRUCTIONS:Because of the low cost of the paperelement, it is generally treated as aconsumable and replaced when dirty. However, depending upon customerpreference, the paper element may becleaned and reused.Water Cleaning:Rap gently to dislodge accumulated dirt, soak thoroughly approximately 15minutes in warm water and milddetergent. Rinse thoroughly under lowpressurewater. Air dry—do not dry withcompressed air.Compressed Air Cleaning:Carefully direct compressed air (100 PSImaximum) through dry element, oppositenormal direction of flow. After cleaning, inspect carefully for holesor cracks. If damaged, replace element.Pleated Felt ElementSPECIFICATIONS:n Durable polyester felt media—pleated.n Oven-cured plastisol end capswith molded sealing beads(larger sizes have metal endcaps with closed cell rubbergaskets).n Media efficiency:99% on 10 microns.SERVICE INSTRUCTIONS:Pleated felt elements may be cleaned andreused. Follow cleaning instructions givenfor paper elements.Wire Mesh ElementSPECIFICATIONS:n Galvanized wire-mesh media—corrugated construction.n Larger sizes have metal end caps.n For best efficiency, wire meshelements must be treated with oil oroil-free adhesive.n May be cleaned and reusedindefinitely.n Wire mesh elements are considered“roughing” filters and are notrecommended for applications thatrequire efficient filtration of fineparticles.Approximate efficiency: 93% on 10microns (with oil or adhesivetreatment).SERVICE INSTRUCTIONS:For best efficiency, wire mesh elementsmust be treated when new and after eachcleaning with oil-free adhesive. Spray theelement on both sides with Universal Oil-Free Adhesive, P/N 81-0323, following thedirections on the container. For oiltreatment, dip the element in SAE 30-50motor oil and drain thoroughly beforeusing. To clean wire mesh elements, washin solvent or warm water and detergent ina container large enough for completeimmersion of element. Rinse completely, drain, and either air dry or usecompressed air. After cleaning and drying,re-treat the element with oil-free adhesiveor oil as described.OIL-FREE ADHESIVEFOR WIRE MESH ELEMENTSThis is an oil-free product developed for useon viscous impingement type filters. It is asubstitute for applications that do notpermit oil wetting of the filter elements, such as oil-free compressors. Universal OilFree Filter Adhesive is available in 16-ounceaerosol spray cans, packaged 6 cans percarton. Order by part number 81-0323.FILTER RESTRICTION GAUGEUniversal’s Filter Restriction Gauge provides aconvenient, accurate means of monitoringfilter pressure drop as the filter elementbecomes increasingly loaded with dirt.Cartridge Filters and Filter Silencers arestandard with threaded connections fordirect mounting of the gauge. See ProductBulletin No. 81-1234 for a completedescription.
