Award of Landscape Merit Peonies The American Peony Society has conferred the Award of Landscape Merit on varieties the committee has chosen for superior ornamental value, overall appearance in the landscape and throughout the growing season, and reliable performance across North America. The committee consists of peony experts from throughout North America. The award was started in 2008 and each year a few new varieties are added. There is a test garden located in Verona, Wisconsin where suggested varieties are tested for their ability to stand up to the weather and other desirable characteristics for landscape plants. Bartzella: Vigorous, care-free but stunning yellow intersectional peony. This cold hardy plant puts out lots of 6-8 inch blooms held up on very sturdy 30-32 inch stems covered with lush green foliage. The blooms are nearly- to fully-double with a delightful sweet lemon-like aroma. The petals feature a red flare at their base. Blooms early mid-season. R. Krinkled White: This peony gets its name from its single-formed flowers which feature broad, pure white petals that have the appearance of crepe paper. A small tuft of yellow stamins forms the center. Although the blooms and 34-inch stems have an elegant, delicate appearance the plant is sturdy and a vigorous grower.
