The American Peony Society has conferred the Award of Landscape Merit
on varieties the committee has chosen for superior ornamental value,
and reliable performance across North America. The committee consists
of peony experts from throughout North America. The award was started
ability to stand up to the weather and other desirable characteristics for
landscape plants.
Bartzella: Vigorous, care-free but stunning
yellow intersectional peony. This cold hardy
plant puts out lots of 6-8 inch blooms held up
on very sturdy 30-32 inch stems covered with
lush green foliage. The blooms are nearly- to
fully-double with a delightful sweet lemon-like
aroma. The petals feature a red flare at their
base. Blooms early mid-season.
This very early hybrid features single, dark
red flowers atop 20-inch, sturdy stems robed
in remarkable dissected leaves that remain attractive
through the growing season—all qualities
that helped it win the APS 2009 Award of
Landscape Merit.
Coral Sunset: Huge, semi-double blooms
crown the tops of thick stems that can reach
up three feet in height. The ruffled petals
add to the glory of the large blooms, which
start out a brilliant coral and mature to a
blush cream color, resulting in a plant with a
multi-color display. It’s not only an APS Gold
Medal Award winner but also for the Award of
Landscape Merit.
Wissing/Klehm, 1981. . . . . . . . . . . $25.00
more than lives up to its name. Big blooms,
more like those of tree peonies, open yellow
gold and feature red flares around a center
of light green and cream. The color remains
strong even in bright sunlight and the bloom
is prolonged by side buds. The lemon-like fragrance
is heavenly. Flowers begin to open midseason
are held up well out of the distinctive
green leaves on 27-inch stems.. . . $65.00
Hilary: A strong-growing intersectional
reaching about 30 inches in height with a
plant spread of more than three feet. Like
most of these hybrids, it hold its flowers erect
large blooms range from nearly red, through
pastel rose and cream colors of each bloom
becoming more subdued as they mature.
