At long last, the Gift of Life
Family House is opening its
doors to transplant families
this spring! With the hustle
and bustle of putting the
finishing touches in place—
applying the final coat of
paint and moving in the
furniture—it’s appropriate to
remember all of the hard work and dedication that went into
making our dream a reality.
For more than four years, volunteers and staff at Gift of Life Donor
Program have been working tirelessly to bring the Family House
goals to fruition: caring for transplant patient caregivers by
offering a safe, affordable place to stay, home-cooked meals and
transportation to area transplant centers. And we couldn’t have
done it without you, our supporters.
Now that the Family House is opening its doors to the families,
our work has only just begun. Sustaining the vision of the Family
House is our top priority, which is why we rely on the generosity
of friends, family and businesses, to help keep our pantries stocked,
our kitchen warm with the smell of home-cooked meals and our
operational needs met with financial contributions.

Throughout this edition of Gift of Life News, you’ll find several
unique opportunities to get involved with the Family House.
We hope you’ll consider becoming a Home Cook Hero, hosting a
Wish List Drive, or making a financial contribution in your name,
or the name of a loved one or business. These are all important
ways to stay connected to the Family House and our families.

WHAT’S IN A NAME?
LYNN FALLON
For Gift of Life Family House board
member and career transplant coordinator
Lynn Fallon, making a financial contribution
to the Family House seemed an appropriate
way to memorialize her father and uncle,
both of whom had received liver transplants.
Fallon’s uncle, Jack Steinmetz, got sick in 1994, received a liver
transplant and lived for 14 wonderful years. He passed away from
unrelated causes.
“Four years ago, my Dad, George (Steinmetz), was diagnosed with
cirrhosis, at the age of 71, and he received a transplant,” says Fallon.
“And he lived another 3-1/2 years, so both of them had many more
birthdays, anniversaries and graduations to share with us.”

While supporting first her uncle, then her father through the
arduous process of an organ transplant, Fallon got to see the
other side of the story—the caregiver’s role in assisting a loved
one through the ordeal. Fallon’s yearly Casino Gala has helped to
raise $25,000 for the Family House, which offered her the unique
opportunity of naming a room at the house in their honor.
PETRELLI and BOTTINO
FAMILIES
The Bottino family was looking for a way
to remember Joe, who passed away on
February 11, 2007 while hospitalized
with liver failure. At the time of his
death Joe was on the waiting list for a
liver transplant, and the family wanted
to raise awareness for organ and tissue
donation.
With several theater events—including one this past January,
a viewing of “Hairspray” at the Ritz Theatre—the Bottino family
raised $25,000 to name a room in his honor, as well as additional
funds to support the Family House’s “Adopt-A-Family” program.
WARRIORS FOR TIM
A seventh-grader at Unami Middle
School, 13 year-old Tim Raymond loved
sports, music and building. But shortly
before Halloween 2009, Tim complained
of a fever and didn’t quite seem himself.
Several days later, the young football
player was in the hospital, fighting H1N1
and additional infections that took every
ounce of strength the young athlete could muster.
Raymond fought the infection, which ravaged his small lungs for
nearly four months. But on March 6, 2010, Tim Raymond passed
away during the lung transplant procedure for which he had
been waiting.
“While our son Tim did receive a transplant,” say Tina and John, “his
body had struggled for so long that he was not strong enough to
make it through the surgery. We firmly believe that our son would
be with us today if only a donor had been found sooner.”
Since that time, the Raymond’s have committed to raising
$100,000 for the Family House fitness center, as well as holding
a pantry item drive.

Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Who provides the food for the meal?
A: Your group is required to bring all food needed in your food
preparation. We do have a pantry with basic food staples. Please
call ahead to check or request to use our items.
Q: How many people should we expect to serve?
A: If providing a dinner, you will need to bring enough food for 50-60 people. If providing
brunch (weekends only) purchase and prepare enough food for 30-40 people. The number of
people staying at the House will determine the number expected to attend meals – you may
call the House prior to your scheduled day for an estimate of the guest occupancy.
Q: How many volunteers can participate for one meal?
A: We must limit groups to a maximum of 10 volunteers and it is usually a 3 to 4 hour time
commitment. If you have a group larger than 10 people we suggest breaking the group up in
sections, for example: preparation and cleanup.
Q: How do I sign up to become a Home Cook Hero?
A: Visit our website at www.GiftofLifeFamilyHouse.org and click on “Join Home Cook Heroes,”
then check our Google Calendar for available dates and select one that works for your group.

How you can help:
Bring Your Culinary Team to Our Kitchen Come over to the Family House and utilize our fully
equipped kitchen. Have fun with your team preparing and serving a meal to our families.
Prepare and Deliver Food prepared in commercial cooking establishments such as restaurants,
catering services or cafeterias and then delivered is much appreciated! With advance notice we
can arrange a pick-up and recruit volunteers for the meal service and clean up.
Stock the Pantry To keep our pantry stocked, the Family House relies on donations from grocery
stores and hospitality organizations—consider making a tax-deductible, in-kind donation today!
Sponsor a Meal Don’t have time? Consider supporting the Home Cook Heroes by underwriting
a meal at the Family House. Each contribution will help provide dinner groceries from one of our
partner grocery providers. A group of volunteers will then prepare and serve a meal on your
behalf to our families.

Unraveling Emotional Issues While Awaiting
a Transplant
Waiting to receive a new organ can be a long, trying process for
patients and families alike. When initially being evaluated for a
transplant, patients and families may be overwhelmed with many
different medical appointments and tests and feel anxious and stressed
by the new information and questions. Once a person is deemed eligible
for a transplant and is listed, the constant contact with the transplant
team may lessen and the patient and family are in a “holding pattern.”
Their job is to wait. Anxiety and depression are often emotions
experienced by patients and families during the wait and it can be
very difficult for them to live their lives.
One transplant recipient described the emotional strain the transplant
process had on him and his wife, especially during the “wait process”
for a new organ. He described it as being full of “ups and downs” while
waiting, and he needed the support of his transplant social worker.
Why would someone become upset when they are waiting for a new
life? Many recipients have described being anxious daily because they
didn’t know if they would have to quickly get to the hospital that day.
Others have described the fear of dying if they didn’t get their new organ

quickly enough. Family members and caregivers have similar emotional
reactions. In addition to caregivers trying to support their family during
the difficult wait process, they are also afraid of what could happen
to their loved one. And lastly, anxiety for some may stem from the
realization that someone else must pass away in order for them to live.
Symptoms of depression or anxiety should never go untreated or
ignored. Some symptoms to watch out for are: increased or decreased
sleep, increased or decreased appetite or weight loss or weight gain,
crying spells, feelings of hopelessness, feelings of guilt, fatigue or loss
of energy, or thoughts of suicide. People experience depression and
anxiety differently, so symptoms may vary.
How do you get treatment if you feel depressed or anxious? Your transplant
social worker can help you work through all of these feelings and
then discuss further options for support or treatment if needed. Further
treatment can include individual counseling, a support group, family
counseling, or even medication. If you or a family member has thoughts of
suicide, seek help immediately from your local hospital emergency room.
Many patients and families can benefit from support groups as well –
before or after a transplant. Support groups allow for a patient or
their family or caregiver to express their feelings. Through the support
of other transplant recipients, the patients and their families can talk
to others who have gone through the same issues. Your transplant
social worker can also help you locate a support group in your area.
The Caregiver Lifeline Program at Gift of Life Family House can also
be a resource for patients and their families if they are feeling lost.

Patients and families do not deserve to feel sad or lonely while waiting
for a new life. Don’t be afraid to ask for help from your transplant social
worker, or the Family House Social Worker. Just because someone is
awaiting their transplant and a second chance at life doesn’t mean they
shouldn’t have a satisfying and meaningful life while they are waiting.
