Westminster Open Spaces NoiseStudy 2008: Final Report• World Health Organisation, Guidelines for Community Noise 3• Average Noise Levels from Westminster Noise Survey 2008 4• Average Noise Levels from Central London boroughs (Westminster, Camden,Southwark and Tower Hamlets), from London Noise Survey 2004 5 .• Average Noise Levels for Outer London and the UK from the National NoiseIncidence Survey 2000/2001 6 .• London Noise Map 7 .2.5 Questionnaire2.5.1 A list of tranquillity influencing indicators was developed using the CPRE 2005 report andsupplementing the indicators used there with a list of factors suitable for an urban context. Each factor was assessed in light of open spaces in Central London, as opposed to ruralenvironments, and by social researchers experienced in usage studies of urban spaces.Using this experience it was possible to refine the list of factors to be investigated. Thesewere then divided into categories based on the basic senses, sight, sound, touch andsmell. An extra category was created to cover more abstract experiential urban designfactors, such as a sense of scale, as well as other factors that respondents may bring upunprompted. These factors and senses are reproduced in the table below:Table 1.
