P r e s i d e n t ’ s M e s s a g e t o G r a d u a t e sGraduates:David understood that his life was a pilgrimage as he wrote in Psalm 138:8: “Finish what youstarted in me, God. Your love is eternal—don’t quit on me now” (The Message). In the future, remember that God never quits on you even when discouragement dogs yourfootsteps. There is nothing you can do to cause Him to love you less than He does, and there isnothing you can do to cause Him to love you any more than He does. His love is eternal —andHe won’t ever quit on you.Yours in Christ,Gordon BietzC o m m e n c e m e n t E v e n t sConsecration............................................Iles P.E. S p e c i a l H o n o r sH o n o r a r y D e g r e eD o c t o r o f S c i e n c eWith his 1974 invention of the collateral ligament reconstruction surgery (commonly knownas the “Tommy John Surgery”), orthopaedic physician Frank Jobe changed baseball history.Upon graduating from Collegedale Academy, Jobe joined the Army in 1943, where he servedas a medical records clerk in the 101st Airborne Division. Encouraged by the physicians he workedwith, Jobe began the path toward a medical degree as soon as the war was over, taking his undergraduatecourses at Southern Missionary College and La Sierra College (now Southern AdventistUniversity and La Sierra University). Jobe received his medical degree from Loma Linda Universityin 1956 and completed his internship and residency at Los Angeles County Hospital.During his residency, Jobe met Robert Kerlan, the first-ever team physician for the Los AngelesDodgers. When Kerlan invited Jobe to join his practice, the young doctor began working with theDodgers and became the team’s orthopaedic physician in 1968.When Tommy John, a pitcher for the Dodgers, ruptured his ulnar collateral ligament, his careerwould have typically ended. But Jobe didn’t believe the 31-year-old needed to be forced intoretirement, so he figured out a way to use a tendon from John’s right wrist to replace the damagedligament in his left elbow. The surgery worked, and Tommy John went on to become the oldestplayer in the major leagues. Since then, more than 1,000 careers (including 75 major league careers)have been saved thanks to Jobe’s invention.Jobe is the author of more than 140 medical publications, 27 book chapters, and seven books. In 1996, the American Orthopaedic Association inducted him into its Hall of Fame. He continuesto serve the Dodgers as special advisor to Chair Frank McCourt and was recently honored at theDodger Stadium with two of his most famous players, Tommy John and former Dodger Orel Hershiser. In recognition of his contribution to society, Southern Adventist University is pleased to conferupon Frank Jobe the degree Doctor of Science (Sc.D.) traditionally awarded for distinguishedleadership in the field of scientific research.

P r e s i d e n t i a l A m b a s s a d o r ’ s A w a r dArnold “Apalachee” Cochran grew up in rural South Georgia and attended Southern MissionaryCollege from 1947 through 1952 before serving two years in the Army. Hesuccessfully coordinated social events, fundraising activities, and communication pieces for this groupover the next seven years. During his tenure, he was instrumental in challenging the SMC-ites toraise funds to help nearly 1,000 Southern student missionaries during their college experience. Thishas proved to be a highly appropriate and successful project for Southern alumni as they continueto carry on the school’s valued tradition of mission service around the world. In 2003, Arnold was elected as the Southern Adventist University Alumni Association president. He actively served in this capacity for the designated two-year term and then served as pastpresident for another two years.
