The most famoustown in the world.London. Berlin. New York. Paris.Any of these, could claim to be the most famous city in the world. But only one town can make a similarly bold claim.A town that’s synonymous with the most famous battle in history. And with a date that’s so well known we don’t even need to print it.A27M25GatwickA23M23BrightonLONDONA22A26NewhavenM25A22A27A21TonbridgeA26M26TunbridgeWellsM20Newhaven - DieppeA228BattleA259A262A21A259B2086A268BexhillEastbourneA28A268B2089A259M2MaidstoneM20HastingsA28TenterdenRyeA2070A28AshfordA259CanterburyA2FolkestoneDover - DieppeRamsgateDoverChannel TunnelBoulogneRamsgate - OstendDover - DunkirkCalaisOur town...famouslyhastingsfamously cultural 6famously authentic 10famously welcoming 14famously historic 18Places to visit in 1066 Country 22Events in Hastings & St Leonards 24St Leonards 28Trails in 1066 Country 29Itineraries 30Accommodation 36How to get here 45Tourist Information Centres 45Accommodation Finder 46Attractions 48Eating Out 504 5

“Several towns lobbied hard to win the JerwoodGallery. Hastings won…”6 7

HastingsfamouslyculturalAlthough it only opened in 2012, the Jerwood galleryhas already become an emblem of the town’s worldclass culture. Visually synonymous with the Stade, its 8,000 hand-glazed tiles were carefully chosen tocomplement the striking net huts.Rowan Moore of the Guardian, identified it as oneof the finest examples of architecture in the world, alongside iconic landmarks such as London’s Shard, the China Central Television Headquarters in Beijingand the Louvre Lens in France. In his review of thegallery, Moore described it as “...a beautiful additionto the many juxtapositions – of cliff and sheds, workand distraction, ancient castle and seaside tat – thatmake this part of the coastline what it is.”Inside, the gallery is home to figurative and abstractworks dating from the First World War to the 1960sand contemporary works by artists associated withJerwood, along with several winners of the JerwoodPainting Prize, including Craigie Aitchison, MaggiHambling and Prunella Clough.Alongside the gallery you’ll find the Stade OpenSpace which hosts a number of major public eventsthroughout the year, from music to outdoor theatre. There are also plans to open “Classroom on the Coast”- a centre of excellence for seafood cooking, in theimpressive Stade Hall.1. 2.3.4. 5. 6.7.8.1. “Throughout Hastings & St Leonards, there’s afeeling of truth and authenticity. A sense that whatyou’re experiencing hasn’t been merely madebut earned….”10 11

Hastingsfamouslyauthentic6.Hastings is home to Europe’s largest beachlaunchedfishing fleet, one of the oldest of its kindin the world. A thousand years of hard-earned craftand technique are written into every inch of thelittle boats that work from the steep Stade shinglebeach. When the boats come ashore usually in the latemorning, they’re winched up the beach wheretheir catch is unloaded into boxes and taken tothe nearby Fishmarket where the fish are soldwholesale. Above the market is Maggie’s, anaward-winning fish and chip café with spectacularsea views. Freshly landed fish, smoked fish andseafood can also be bought fresh off the boat fromthe small sheds that line the Winch Road.Hastings has always been a sustainable fishery andin 2005 was awarded the Marine StewardshipCouncil’s certified status for Dover Sole, Mackereland Herring. The traditional netting techniquesused by the fishermen are not only a testament to away of life that has been lost from most parts of theworld but also a genuine example of living history. So if you’re tired of everything tasting like it comesfrom nowhere in particular, why not try somethingthat’s authentically Hastings?1.2. 3.4.5. 7. 8.1. “When you visit Hastings on May Day Bank HolidayMonday, you become part of a family. A big greendancing and singing family….”14 15

Hastingsfamouslywelcoming5.Hastings’ Jack-in-the-Green Festival of MorrisDancing traditionally takes place over the firstweekend in May and is renowned for its rougharound-the-edges4.charm, rowdy swagger andwarm heart. Every year, thousands of residents, visitors (and several thousand bikers!) take part inMay Day celebrations that are the envy of everyother town in the UK.1.The climactic May Day procession goes further. It makes everybody feel like they are part ofsomething bigger than themselves. A living, breathing throng of dancers, drummers andrevellers takes to the streets in a centuries-oldtradition that marks the hallowed passage ofSpring into Summer. The town is turned into aplayground of light and sound and colour, roadsare closed and people are united in a gloriousgreen ecstasy that’s unlike anything you willexperience anywhere else!Like all the events that take place in our town, the procession is about far more than rituals andspectacle. It’s an open embrace to anybody whowants to express themselves, an invitation to leavethe ordinary behind and become part of a uniquecommunity. A community that doesn’t care whoyou are or where you’re from. Only that you arepresent. And prepared to be painted green!2. 3.6. 7. 8.1. Hastings is home to 2. Hastings Week 3. The St Leonards4. Hastings Old Town 5. “Hastings is at the heart of one of the mostimportant historical regions in the whole world...”18 19

HastingsfamouslyhistoricHastings and 1066 Country are so closely4.intertwined that it isn’t possible to tell the story ofone without that of the other. The 31 mile 1066Country Walk is, for many people, the best way ofdiscovering the profound connections betweenHastings and its surroundings. The route takesyou across a rural and coastal landscape that’s rich7.in ruins, and relics and resonates with the mostfamous moment in English history.1.At first glance, the nearby market town of Battle, with its dominant Abbey gateway, might not seemto have any connection at all to Hastings, but the5.Abbey grounds are home to the site of the Battleof Hastings itself, a fact that’s celebrated with anannual spectacular re-enactment.At Pevensey, you’ll find the original landing pointfor the Norman invasion but the castle, with itslayers of fortifications, tells the story of two othermajor conflicts: the Roman occupation and theSecond World War.A little away along the coast, you’ll encounterBexhill-on-Sea, birthplace of British motor racingand home of the thriving Sovereign Light Cafeimmortalised in Battle supergroup Keane’s fifth2. 3.6.8.consecutive number one album, ‘Strangeland’.Further along the coast is the Medieval andGeorgian splendour of Rye , once home toliterary icons Henry James, EF Benson and Rumer 1.
