A map of Christchurch CBD andits environs is shown in Figure 1. Most of the city was mainlyswamp behind sand dunes, and estuaries and lagoons that havenow been drained (Brown et al. 1995). The surface geology ofthe greater Christchurch area consists of predominantly recentHolocene (
