SAN FRANCISCO. POLICEMAN - Page 4 February 1981AROUND THEDEPARTMENTb y Al Casciato• • . There is a crisis developing in the RecruitmentUnit. During their last drive they were only able to get44% of those that signed up to test. For the next testthey expect to have 60% of the applicants beingretesters and another short turn out. Well, we shouldn'tbe surprised because when our recruiters hit the publicthey have zero incentives to offer. In some places theyeven get laughed at when they try to sell the second tierretirement system.• • . Mike Hebel advises that as of the last bar examthere are now 105 persons for each listed attorney in thecity and with all those hungry lawyers out there, mediocre suits will abound.• . A few months ago, Lt: Vincent Senatore, on theSolo motorcycles, was injured in an accident on thefreeway. The Department of Public Health ParaMedicsambulance arrived and had t6 pry him off of the policecycle and took him to Mission Emergency for treatment.A couple of weeks ago, Vince got a bill for $75from the hospital from that arnbulau'e trip. Althoughhe was injured while in uniformand on duty, the Cityhas left no stone unturned to get revenue...Some night watch junior officers are realizingthat something is drastically wrong, with the systemwhen the civilian employee who handles the book in thestation makes more than 2/3 of the patrol officers on thewatch because of the 6.5% night differential that ispaid all city employees, except police and fire.• . . Well, leave it to a lawyer's daughter to make thetax deadline. That's why my first little niece CarolynDaly Link did w,hen she checked into this world at 3p.m. on December .31, 1980. My sister, Julie, and husband,John, are celebrating heartly for their first arrivalis a little doll. But watch out for the uncle, he might juststeal her away. Congrats...• . • For those of you planning to participate in thisyear's police Olympics, contact your event coordinatorsoon. WrightCongratulations to all the members who ran for officein the recent election of officers and directors forthe San Francisco Police Officers' Association. Competitionis healthy, and most of the offices were heavilycontested. The defeated candidates are winners too, forwithout them, apathy rules. The Bob Barry, Paul Chignell, Mike Hebel and RenoRapagnani slate easily defeated the Jack Ballentine,William Kidd, Gerald Schmidt and Al Casciato slatefor the four top offices. The margin was about 2 to 1 orgreater for most of the offices. The Winner's Circle -How Sweet It Is!I would hope that the first order of business at theBoard meeting for January 20th is Collective Bargaining.CB would give us the means to negotiate forbenefits we don't have, but that many of the competingpolice departments do have WHICH THEY USE TOHIRE AND RETAIN POLICE OFFICERS. Time andone half for overtime - ever hear of it? Educational incentivepay is not exactly new. San Carlos PD has had itfor over twenty years. Night differential pay, maybe 6%more, was olde hat at the post office thirty years ago.Collective Bargaining is where it's at.Bob Barry is probably in better shape to be Presidentnow than he was two years ago. After all, he does havethe experience of two years and he is both active andvisible. I would hope that he is able to make the Committeework, all of it, desirable. It has been my experiencethat the Board as a whole, depends heavily onthe several Committees for testimony on a given subjectto help the Board formulate a vote decision. If the Committeesare not viable, progress is stymied.I encourage the election losers to remain interestedand active in the Association work. Their particularknowledge on many subjects can prove to be mosthelpful to the Association..s••.•THEFINANCIAL CORNERINC* 421-3698Open 6 a.m.401 SANSOME STREET(Corner Sansome & Sacramento)SAN FRANCISCO, CABREAKFAST, LUNCH AND FULL BARDear Fellow Police Officers:SAN FRANCISCOFellowship ofChristianPeaee OffleersThe new Board of Directors of COPS FOR CHRIST(San Francisco) for the year 1981, are as follows: JimCrowley (Homicide) President; Ed Erdelatz (Homicide)Vice President; Jim Higgins (Robbery) Treasurer; DanHampton (Academy) Secretary; and Joe Mollo(Academy) Spiritual Outreach. The Board of Directors welcomes all police officers toattend our monthly luncheon held on the secondTHURSDAY of each month.
