SAN FRANCISCO POLICEMAN - Page 22 February 1981BOXINGThe Police Activities League is currently sponsoring,aBoxing Program held daily between 3:30 p.m. and 7:00p.m. Mondays through Fridays at the Old NationalGuard Armory located at 14th and Mission Streets.Anyone between the ages of 8 and 21 years are invitedto call PAL Headquarters (567-3215) for signups. Alluniforms, equipment, -workout gloves, headgear,-andfacilities are provided free of charge. Because of theproximity to the Mission District, all youths from thatdistrict are especially welcome.On January 30, 31 and February 1, Boxing CoachesBill Mateo, Bob Mateo, and Erwin Bunge, led a contingentof San Francisco PAL Boxers to Reno, Nevada,to participate in the Reno, Nevada Police Department'sPolice Youth Activities Gold and Silver Boxing Tournamentheld in the jai alai room of the MGM GrandHotel. More than 100 boxers from California,Washington, Oregon, Nevada, Arizona and New Mexicocompeted.San Francisco PAL Boxers include: J.C. Camacho139 lbs., Frank Gonzales 165 lbs., Eric Martin 147lbs., Jose Rosilla 147 lbs., Robert Bowman 88 lbs.,Alvaro Matus 130 lbs., and David Pastora 139 lbs. Inthe eliminations beginning with Friday night January30, Bowman, Matus and Pastora, were eliminated.Coach Mateo states that they gave a good accounting ofthemselves and the decisions were split. Of the fourboxers remaining, J.C. Camacho emerged as thechamp winning a gold medal in his division. 165 lb.Frank Gonzales lost a close decision in the finals andwas awarded a silver medal. Eric Martin, PAL's Boxerof the Year for 1 . 980 (and in contention for 1981), wasmatched in the finals with Robert Liggins from Boise,Idaho. Liggins is ranked No. 2 in the nation! Martinwon the first round handily. In the second round, Martinbloodied his opponent and had him on the run whenhe received a low blow which resulted in the match beingheld up for two minutes. Martin received yetanother low blow in the third round. Upon conclusionof the fight, the crowd roared their approval and theboxers received a standing ovation. Liggins won by- 1point.Jose Rosila also reached the finals only to lose by asplit decision. A good time was had by all. San FranciscoPAL was awarded one gold and three silvermedals for their effort. Congratulations to our boxersfor a job well done. Also congrats to our coaches BillMateo, Bob Weibel and Erwin Bunge, for all their timeand effort.Coach Mateo further reports that the PAL will besponsoring a series of amateur boxing bouts in comingmonths. The next show to be held at the old NationalGuard Armory, f4th and Mission Sts, is scheduled forMonday, February 16, 1981 at 7 p.m. Adults $3.00 andstudents $1.00. All proceeds to benefit the PAL BoxingTeam. Tickets may be purchased at the door. E), has finalized the 1981 schedule for the Departmentof Fish and Game Hunter Safety Courses, and isas follows:1. March 23&25 5. Aug. 24&262. May 11&13 6. Sept. 21&233. June 22&24 7. Oct. 12&144. July 27&29 8. Dec. 7&9The two day sessions are four hours each from 6 p.m.to 10 p.m. and are held at PAL Headquarters, 2475Greenwich Street. Pre-registration by telephone is required.Classes will include safe gun handling at homeand in the field, conservation and sportsmanship. A$5.00 registration fee is required from adults. There isno fee for persons 17 and under. The course will includefilms, slides and practical demonstrations. This PAL Pee Wee BaseballLeague, under the expert direction of Mrs. ThelmaWilliams, is a beginner training league. Everyone onthe team gets to play.
