SIGULDA
Located on the both sides of the Gauja valley, Sigulda is one of the most beautiful
Latvian towns. For centuries, it has been captivating visitors from around
the world wishing to experience the breathtaking view across the valley and
discover the unique objects that are, in large numbers, located right next to
each other all across Sigulda and its surroundings.
MORE
More is known as a unique place, not only in the history of Latvia, but in the
history of Europe. Very important battles were fought in 1944, when Latvians
battled in war with forces ten times bigger and influenced the course of history.
To honour these events, a Battle Commemorative park has been created
and fragments of trenches and bunkers can be seen in More. Many traces of
the time may be explored in More’s Battle museum.
More can be enjoyed by animal lovers. Mini Zoo Salmiņi is proud to host more
than 50 species of birds, as well as very small animals. In the deer reserve Safari
More, in a paddock area of 140 ha live more than 300 fallow-deer and European
red deer. One can be certain – not only will they come really close to
you but they will gladly take some snacks right from your hand.
ALLAŽI
Five kilometres from Sigulda, Allaži invites you to look at some interesting objects.
You can take a look at the lake, which at times disappears underground
partly or totally; you may visit a romantic church and taste some goat cheese
made in Allaži. Besides the unique geological object with its cave-ins in Ezernieki
karst caves, visitors to Allaži are happy to enjoy the springs of Kaļķugrava.
Does the water in these springs really have some mysterious power? And it
seems there is no other place in Latvia where you can find a national romanticism
style church, with such acoustics. Besides, Allaži is the only place where in
the local manor houses from 1823 to 1905 the celebrated drink ķimelis – greatly
loved even in royal houses of Europe – was brewed.
GETTING TO SIGULDA
Sigulda is located 50 km or one hour’s drive away from Riga, regardless of
whether you drive by car, bus or train. Public transport runs every hour from Riga
International Bus Station and Central Station.

6. The Černauski cult stone
There is a hollow area on the surface of the
boulder with traces of ancient fire rituals. It
has been mentioned in historical sources

The Lutheran church of Allaži is a national
memorial site, built in 1926. During the Soviet
period, the church was used as a cafeteria,
later a warehouse. The church has
since been fully reconstructed.

THE LEGEND OF THE ROSE OF TURAIDA
“In the spring of 1601, during the Polish - Swedish
War, Swedish troops occupied Turaida
Castle. After the battle, the clerk of the castle,
Greifs, found a few week-old girl between the
killed soldiers. He carried the girl home and
pledged to raise her. It was May, so the girl
was named Maija. Years passed, and Maija
grew into a pretty maiden. Because of her
beauty people called her the Rose of Turaida.
On the opposite bank of Gauja – in the
Sigulda Castle – lived her fiancé, gardener
Viktors Heils. In the evenings they met at Gutman’s
cave. At that time two Polish army deserters
– Jakubovskis and Skudrītis – served at
the castle. Jakubovskis lusted after Maija and
wanted to marry her, but she rejected his proposal.
It enraged Jakubovskis and he decided
to get the girl by force. He sent Skudrītis as
if on behalf of Viktors to tell Maija to come to
their usual meeting place, but – at an unusual
time. When Maija came and saw that it was
a trap, she decided that she would rather
die than be embarrassed. It was a time when
people believed in witchcraft. There was a
red silk handkerchief around the girl’s neck,
which her groom had given her, so she said
to Jakubovskis that this scarf has a magical
ability – it shields its carrier from a sword, and
asked him to try it out. Jakubovskis hesitated
at the beginning, but then he took the sword
and hit her as strong as he could, and the girl
collapsed at his feet. Jakubovskis, frightened
and revolted by his own deed ran into the
World Cup in Roller Slalom 14.-15.07.
For the first time, the World Cup in Roller
Slalom will be held in Latvia. Roller slalom is
a new sport, in which one has to go down
a slalom route with rollers used instead of
skates.

Can we expect nature’s victory over the

in the framework of the NATURE / URBAN /

rushed to Turaida for help. Viktors’ hatchet
was found with blood at the cave. A court
was held in Turaida Castle and it was ruled
that the killer was Viktors, and sentenced
him to death. Skudrītis, who had followed Jakubovskis
and seen everything, changed the
course of events. He told the court what had
happened in reality, and Viktors was set free,
but the girl was buried in the cemetery at the
church of Turaida. Her memorial can be seen
at the Turaida church.”
The old legend inspired several authors to create
works of art on the Rose of Turaida about
eternal fidelity and the power of love.

OBJECTS OF CULTURAL HERITAGE
If you are interested in history, Sigulda is the right place. Since the time the
Livs fought with the German crusaders, Sigulda has had some exciting legends
and three mighty castles, located a cannon shot away from each other.
Events related to these castles tell the story of the 13th century, when after a
collision between the Bishop and the Sword Order, each side of the Gauja was
under a different ruler.

1. Sigulda Medieval Castle
It was built in 1207 as a castellum type fortress
and later on rebuilt into a convent type building.
From 2012 it is possible to climb up the
North Tower and the Main Gate Tower, walk on
the castle walls and enjoy the medieval aura.

2. Turaida Museum Reserve
The most visited museum in Latvia, where you
can get acquainted with expositions concerning
archaeology, culture and art history,
which tell the story of events that have occurred
during the last 1000 years. Medieval
castle and church, Gauja Livs, the old manor
centre and Dainu Hill – each tells its own story.

3. Sigulda New Castle
It was built in 1878 in the Neo-Gothic style
as the living house for the owners of the
manor, the Kropotkin family. The building has
changed its owners and functions several
times. Since 1993, the Sigulda Region Council
has been located in the castle.

4. Monument for Kronvaldu Atis
Established in 1938, it was originally located
near the White Castle. In 1869, Kronvaldu Atis,
for the first time in history, read a report on
language rights in Latvian at a conference in

It is also referred to as Livs’ Mountain. An important
11th century fortification of the Gauja Livs,
on which the Dabrelis castle was located. The

7. Ruins of Krimulda Medieval Castle
Castle of the Riga Capitulum, built around 1255,
it was the smallest of the three castles at the
Gauja valley. The castle was not renewed after
burning down in 1601.

It was established in 2007 as a tribute to Sigulda’s

Three huge iron keys, supported by stone walls

11. Monument for Krišjānis Barons
The monument for the father of Latvian folk song
(Daina), a man who dedicated his life to the
collection of Latvian folk songs, was built in 1985
year, its author is the sculptor, T. Zaļkalns.

12. The bridge across the Gauja
The first bridge across the Gauja was built in 1937,
at the time it was considered a particularly difficult
technical construction, but soon afterwards
it was destroyed during the war. The current

If you want to come closer to nature, Gauja National Park offers exciting routes
with different ways of exploring them. You can walk, ride a bike, choose a

1. Gutman’s Cave
The largest cave in the Baltic countries and
also the oldest tourist attraction in Latvia. On
the walls of the cave there are inscriptions
from the 17th century. The legend of the Rose
of Turaida began in this cave.

2. Painters’ (Paradise Hill)
The breathtaking landscapes that can be
seen from the cliff of the Gauja valley have
been painted by such great artists as Jūlijs Feders,
Janis Rozentāls and Vilhelms Purvītis, thus
the name of the cave.

3. Crows’ gorge and cave
Gauja sandstone outcrop in the ravine at the
left bank of Vējupīte. A small triangular cave
has formed in the rock wall.

4. Peter’s Cave
A narrow gap in a red sandstone wall. Legend
has it that a farmer named Peter was hiding in
this cave during the Swedish War.

5. Devil’s cave and cliffs.
The pedestrian bridge over Gauja
The last greatest rock wall of the Gauja valley,
15 m high. 8 m below water level, the Devil’s
cave – an ancient place of worship – has formed
in the cliff. It is a protected geological object.

6. Witches’ cauldron
A huge sufosia funnel transformed by active
erosion with the depth of 30m and width of
20m. Ancient legend tells that this used to be
a place for witch Sabbaths and courts.

7. Vikmeste valley
Vikmeste River used to be the natural border
between the lands of Turaida and Krimulda.
A number of picturesque sandstone rock outcrops
can be found in the valley.

8. Piķene cliff
A one km long span of the Gauja’s right bank,
with small side ravines. Several sandstone outcrops
and a small waterfall can be seen there.

9. Emperor’s Chair and Emperor’s View
(Ķeizarkrēsls and Ķeizarskats)
A viewing spot at the high Beite ravine. They
acquired their name after the Russian Emperor
Alexander II visited Sigulda.

More than a hundred years ago, local farmers
offered Sigulda guests some fresh milk and
sold canes at this place.

14. Serpentine road
The only serpentine road in the Baltic States,
constructed in 1862 for the first time, in anticipation
of the visit of Russian Tsar Alexander II. In
2006, new pavement and lighting lanterns were
installed, creating a romantic place for walking.

15. Sculpture group Knight Parade
It was created during the art workshop Viduslaiku
dzelzsgriezējs (Medieval Metal Cutter) in
2010. The authors of the parade are six Latvian

16. The sculpture Wind Chimes
The sculpture was opened in 2007 while celebrating
the 800th birthday of Sigulda. Each of
the eight wind chimes represents one century
of Sigulda’s history. The author is Inta Berga.
