28Liberty and Propertydifferent from its antonym, the whole; it isidentical with it. A brotherless party is not aparty, and the one party principle is in fact ano-party principle. It is a suppression of anykind of opposition. Freedom implies theright to choose between assent and dissent. But in Newspeak it means the duty to assentunconditionally and strict interdiction of dissent. This reversal of the traditional connotationof all words of the political terminology isnot merely a peculiarity of the language of theRussian Communists and their Fascist andNazi disciples. The social order that in abolishingprivate property deprives the consumersof their autonomy and independence, andthereby subjects every man to the arbitrarydiscretion of the central planning board, couldnot win the support of the masses if they werenot to camouflage its main character. Thesocialists would have never duped the voters ifthey had openly told them that their ultimateend is to cast them into bondage. For exotericuse they were forced to pay lip-service to thetraditional appreciation of liberty.
