HappeningsGift of $315,350 in SchoolBAG GrantsReflecting Sembcorp Marine’s commitment in nurturing children and youths, the Group and its subsidiariescontributed $315,350 in financial grants through its School Book Assistance Grant (SchoolBAG) programme,benefitting 1,578 needy students from 85 schools in 2012.During the presentation ceremony held at Woodgrove SecondarySchool on <strong>Nov</strong>ember 9, 2012, student representatives receivedthe SchoolBAG cheques from Guest-of-Honour Mdm HalimahYacob, Speaker of the Parliament of Singapore and formerMinister of State for Social and Family Development. Launchedin 2001, the Group’s SchoolBAG programme extends a helpinghand to students from low-income families by subsidising the costof purchasing textbooks, uniforms, stationery and other basicschool items as well as enrichment activities. Since its founding,the corporate social responsibility initiative has given out morethan $2.79 million in grants to nearly 14,000 students.In her speech, Mdm Halimah Yacob commended the team atSembcorp Marine for initiating the SchoolBAG programme and“for their generosity and selfless support in making a differenceto the lives of the students”. She added that she was pleasedthat many corporations, such as Sembcorp Marine, had comeforward with programmes to complement the various governmentschemes which provide social assistance and care for low-incomefamilies and the less privileged in the community.Mr Ong Poh Kwee, Sembcorp Marine’s Deputy President, said:“It is our belief that children and youths are the future pillars ofour society and they should be given opportunities to grow theirtalents, discover their strengths and achieve their fullest potentialregardless of their financial situation."Chua Wei Qian, a Secondary Three student from Bukit BatokSecondary School, is one of the beneficiaries of the SchoolBAG Guest-of-Honour Mdm Halimah Yacob, Speaker of the Parliament of Singapore andformer Minister of State for Social and Family Development, and Mr Ong Poh Kwee,Sembcorp Marine’s Deputy President, engaging the SchoolBAG grant recipients.scheme. He has received the grant for the last three years and isthankful for the grant by Sembcorp Marine as it allows him to usethe money to purchase books for self-use which are subsequentlypassed down to his cousins. Another third-time recipient ofSchoolBAG is Nurul Atikah Bte Jalil, a Primary Four student fromYuhua Primary School. She plans to spend part of the grant inpurchasing assessment books for the coming year and to savethe rest.
