4. Fold the smaller rubber ring (which is inside the condom) intoa figure of eight5. Insert this ring and the condom deep up inside thevagina so the inner ring springs open near the cervix andholds the condom in place. Some women put one leg ona chair or bed to open the vagina further or they lie ontheir backs with their knees raised. It is like putting in atampon.6. The outer, larger ring should be outside the vagina. Puttinglubricant and spermicide inside the condom makes sex betterand safer7. The man can now enter the woman, they can have sex andhe can ejaculate safely (the condom acts as a barrier to thesemen and vaginal fluid)8. Remove the condom carefully by twisting it, tie it in a knotand throw in a pit latrine or bury or burn it (do not flush down aWestern toilet!)All women need to practice putting in the female condom so if they need to use itthey can use it correctly and confidently and protect themselves and their partner.4.18 Resisting pressure and negotiating safer sexResisting pressure is important for young people to avoid risk. They need to preparefor this using role play, case studies and discussion. Young men and womenneed to know what to say and how to say it assertively (politely but firmly). They canalso practice situations, actions and consequences in the safety of the classroom (orChurch youth group or peer group) so they are prepared for when it really happens.Self study: Who is going to put the young person under pressure? List people whowould put them under negative pressure. Why would they do that?It is a crucial important part of life skills teaching. Young people need to learn how toresist pressure to:• Have sex• Have unprotected sex• Have sex for money or favours• Marry too young to the wrong person or for the wrong reasons• Drink home brew and beer• Smoke drugs35
