The more times you doit the more likely you are to catch something. Some could also lead to unplannedpregnancy.Remember sex always has consequences.4.5 Risky timesPersonal Development asks young people to think about situations that could putthem at risk. Some <strong>of</strong> these could include: harvest, disco, singsing, traveling awayfrom home for the first time for work or school, pay Friday, being away from yourhusband and wife, being alone with your boyfriend/girlfriend, walking in an isolatedarea or drinking with friends.Self study: Make a list <strong>of</strong> risky times for men and risky times for women. Are theythe same? Why are they different?4.6 Groups who are at risk• People with many sexual partners• Women married to unfaithful men• Men married to unfaithful women• Young women who have much older boyfriends or husbands• Young men in gangs or groups• Men and women who drink heavily• Men and women who live away from their family and partner• Men and women who do not use condoms• Men and women who are involved in polygamous marriages• People with untreated STIs• Men who use sex workers• Men who have sex with menEvery sexually active person is at risk <strong>of</strong> <strong>HIV</strong> in an epidemic.The <strong>HIV</strong> epidemic in PNG is “generalized” – everyone who is sexually active isat risk.Self study: Make a list <strong>of</strong> other high risk groups (e.g. teachers, truckers etc). Whyare they at risk? How could they avoid risk? Do you fall into a high risk group?4.7 AbstinenceYoung people must be prepared to resist pressure to have sex too young. Older,married people must be able to resist the temptation to be unfaithful to their partner.The message should depend on the audience. Who would these apply to?29
