Topic 3: HIV/AIDS EpidemicHIV was first recorded by doctors in 1981 in gay men in USA. Since then it hasspread to every country in the world. By 2006 HIV had infected 65,000,000 peopleand killed about 25 million. In 2007 over 6800 people were infected every single day.About 5700 people died every single day. It is a global pandemic (this means it is adisease that spreads over a whole country or across the whole world).3.1 HIV/AIDS global pandemicPapua New Guinea is not alone in facing an HIV epidemic (an epidemic is a largenumber of cases of a particular disease happening at the same time in a particularcommunity). Throughout the world, millions of people are living with HIV and manymore millions have been affected by the epidemic. We have a lot to learn from othercountries that have faced very serious epidemics.
