sequence of the aspects of world realized in consciousness, which isaccompanied by a simultaneous increase in the powers of emergentconsciousness by which consciousness is increasingly able to become areality. Whereas the tenor of the magic structure is definitely one ofnature realized in emotion, and that of the mythical structure is one of thepsyche realized in imagery, the tenor of the mental structure is one of aspatial world realized in thought. Now it is true that the powers whichmake possible these realizations increase in number and becomeconscious and usable; but there is a simultaneous narrowing of therealized aspect of world which at first glance appears incongruous: natureand the psyche, both incommensurate, are more all-encompassing thanthe spatial world apprehended by the measuring thought which culminatesin perspectivity. The dilemma can perhaps be resolved if we turn to a summary of aspectsthat can be brought together under the headings of the degree and therelation of consciousness of the respective structures. Here we encounterthe symmetry spoken of earlier that may provide some assurance wherethe apparent inconsistencies of the phenomena could tend to becomeconfusing. This symmetry will be apparent from the following cross-section:Structure7. Consciounessa)-degree b) -relationArchaic deep sleep universe-related: breathing spellMagic sleep outer-related (nature): exhalingMythical dream inner-related (psyche): inhalingMental wakefulnessouter-related (spatial world):exhalingIntegral (transparency)(inware-related: inhaling? orbreathing-spell?)Our inclusion of deep sleep and sleep under the rubric of consciousness inthis cross section may be justified by the fact that we do not attributeconsciousness to these two states (which might be designated as asomnolent and somniative, i.e., dream consciousness respectively), butonly a form or degree of consciousness in view of their function in theawakening process reflected by the mutational series. This also rendersinvalid the prevalent dualistic pairing of an Unconscious as opposed toConsciousness. The symmetry to which we have just referred is evident in what we mightcall the pulse or the breath rhythm inherent in the mutations whenconsidered as a whole. The archaic structure might be thought of as thesilent pause before breath; and when we apostrophize this structure in asomewhat unilateral manner as a "silent pause," we should also bring tomind the inaudible singing latent in every pause: the musica calladaor37
